259 - Mu'mir ibn Shabib ibn Shaybah, al-Mu'afa narrated in the sixty-fourth sitting of al-Jalis, stories from Muhammad ibn Makhlad, from Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ibn Maymun, from Wazir ibn Muhammad, from him, including deniable reports. Among them is one from Mu'mir ibn Shabib, that he heard al-Ma'mun say: "I tested al-Shafi'i in everything and found him to be complete. However, there remains one trait: if I were to give him Indian lettuce, it would overcome the man with a robust body and sound mind." He then told me: Thabat the servant informed me that he was summoned and given a ratl, and he said: "O Commander of the Faithful, I have never drunk this," but he insisted, and he drank it. Then he continued to give him twenty ratls, yet neither his mind changed nor did he cease to present arguments." I said, "Perhaps al-Shafi'i drank it out of caution, as he considered caution before the caliphs to be permissible."
