- Rabi'ah ibn Umayyah ibn Khalaaf ibn Wahb ibn Hudhafah ibn Jumah al-Jumahi al-Qurashi
witnessed the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and accepted Islam, then drank alcohol during the caliphate of Umar and fled in fear of the punishment to Sham (Syria), and later joined the Romans and converted to Christianity.- Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn al-Muslim al-Faqih and Abu al-Ma'ali al-Husayn ibn Hamzah ibn al-Sa'di informed us, saying: Abu al-Hasan Ahmad ibn Abd al-Wahid ibn Abi Hadid narrated to me, saying: My grandfather Abu Bakr narrated to me, saying: Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ja'far al-Khuraqi narrated to us, saying: Abu Bakr al-Ramadi narrated to us, saying: Abd al-Razzaq narrated to me, from Ma'mar, from al-Zuhri, who said: And I, too, was with Abu Bakr al-Khuraqi when he narrated: Al-Abbas al-Duri narrated to us, saying: Ya'qub ibn Ibrahim ibn Sa'd narrated to us, from my father, from Salih ibn Kaysan, from al-Zuhri, from Zurara ibn Mus'ab ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, from al-Miswar ibn Makhramah, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, who said: "I guarded with Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) one night in the city, and while we were walking, a lamp lit up for us in a house. So we went to it, but when we drew near, we saw a door ajar with people inside it, and they were raising their voices and making a commotion." Umar took my hand and said to me: "Do you know whose house this is?" I said: "No."
He said: "This is the house of Rabi'ah ibn Umayyah ibn Khalaaf, and they are drinking now. What do you think?" I replied: "I see that we have come to what Allah, Blessed and Exalted be He, has forbidden us: {And do not spy} (Surah Al-Hujurat 49:12)." Al-Ramadi added that we had indeed spied, and Umar raised his hand and left them.
- Abu Bakr Wajih ibn Tahir narrated to us, saying: Abu Hamid ibn al-Zuhri narrated to me, saying: Abu Sa'id ibn Hamdun narrated to me, saying: Abu Hamid ibn al-Sharqi narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, saying: Abd al-Razzaq narrated to me, from Ma'mar, from al-Zuhri, from Zurara ibn Mus'ab ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, from al-Miswar ibn Makhramah, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf: that he guarded one night with Umar ibn al-Khattab in the city, and while they were walking, a lamp lit up for them in a house. So they went to it until, when they drew near, they saw a door ajar with people inside it, and there were raised voices and a commotion. Umar said, taking Abd al-Rahman's hand: "Do you know whose house this is?" He said: "No."
Umar said: "This is the house of Rabi'ah ibn Umayyah ibn Khalaaf, and they are drinking now, as you see." Abd al-Rahman replied: "I see that we have come to what Allah has forbidden us." Umar said: {And do not spy} (Surah Al-Hujurat 49:12), "but we have indeed spied," and Umar turned away from them and left them.
