8198 - Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Ali al-San'ani narrated to me in Mecca, may Allah preserve it, saying: Ishaq ibn Ibrahim al-Dabari narrated to us, mentioning that Abdul Razzaq narrated to him, that Ma'mar narrated to him, from al-Zuhri, from Zurara ibn Mus'ab ibn Abd Rahman ibn Awf, from al-Miswar ibn Makhramah, from Abd Rahman ibn Awf, who said: He was on guard one night with Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) in the city, and while they were walking, a lamp was lit for them in a house. So they went to it in prayer until, as they neared, they found a door ajar and people inside with raised voices. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) took Abd Rahman's hand and said: "Do you know whose house this is?" He said: "No." Umar said: "This is the house of Rabi'ah ibn Umayyah ibn Khalth, and they are drinking now." What do you think?" Abd Rahman replied: "I see we have come to what Allah has forbidden. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has commanded us, saying: {And do not spy on one another} (Surah al-Hujurat 49:12). We have indeed spied." So Umar turned away from them and left them. This is a hadith with a soundchain of narration, and they did not include it in their collections.

- .... Al-Bukhari and al-Hakam narrated it through another chain from Ibn Ishaq, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Ata, from Ibn Abbas, who said: The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) commanded Rabi'ah and mentioned him, and if there had been no other significance in this command, counting him among the companions would have been correct. However, it was reported that he apostatized during the time of Umar. Ya'qub ibn Shaybah narrated in his Musnad from the way of Hammad, from Muhammad ibn Amr, from Yahya ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Hatib, that Abu Bakr al-Siddiq was the most insightful of people regarding visions. Rabi'ah ibn Umayyah came to him and said: "I saw in a dream as if I were in a lush, fertile land, and I emerged from it into a barren, desolate land. I saw you in a suit of iron by a bed, until the Day of Resurrection." He said: "If your vision is true, you will move from faith to disbelief," and for me, that is my religion, gathered in the most trying of circumstances until the Day of Resurrection.
- Rabi'ah drank alcohol during the time of Umar and fled from him to Syria, then escaped to Caesar, where he converted to Christianity and died there." Ibn Abd al-Barr mentioned this story in Al-Isti'ab in a brief form, stating that Umar was the one who interpreted it for him.
- Abdul Razzaq said, from Mu'mar, from al-Zuhri, from Zurara ibn Mus'ab ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, from al-Maswar ibn Makhramah, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, that he stayed awake one night with Umar in Medina, and a lamp flared up for them in a house. They went to it, and there was a door ajar on a group of people inside it with loud voices and commotion. Umar said to Abd al-Rahman: "Do you know whose house this is?" He said: "No." Umar said: "This is the house of Rabi'ah ibn Umayyah, and they are drinking now." What do you think?" Abd al-Rahman replied: "I see that we have come to what Allah has forbidden us: {And do not spy} (Surah Al-Hujurat 49:12)." Umar then turned back.
- And with this chain to al-Zuhri, from Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib, that Umar exiled Rabi'ah ibn Umayyah ibn Khalaf for drinking alcohol to Khaybar, and he joined Heraclius and converted to Christianity. Umar said: "No one will be exiled for this after him, ever." Al-Nasa'i narrated it from the path of Mu'tamir ibn Sulayman, from Abdul Razzaq.

So they went to approach it, and when they drew near, they saw the door of the house ajar with people inside, their voices raised and in confusion. - .... Safwan ibn Umayyah had a brother named Rabi'ah ibn Umayyah ibn Khalaf, who had two incidents with Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). I thought it important to mention them. Rabi'ah ibn Umayyah ibn Khalaf accepted Islam in the year of the Conquest (of Mecca) and he had seen a vision which he shared with Umar. He said: "I saw as if I were in a lush valley, then I left it for a barren valley, and then I awoke while I was in the barren valley." Umar said: "You will believe, then disbelieve, and die while you are a disbeliever." Rabi'ah replied: "I did not see anything else." Umar said: "Your case has been decided as it was for the companions of Yusuf." They both said: "We did not see anything." Yusuf said: {The matter you were inquiring about has been decreed} (Surah Yusuf 12:41). Then he drank wine, and Umar ibn al-Khattab struck him with the legal punishment and Exiled him to Khaybar, where he joined the land of the Romans and converted to Christianity. When Uthman became the caliph, he sent a messenger to him, specifically Abu al-Awfar al-Salami, who said to him: "Return to your religion and your homeland, preserve your lineage and your kinship to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and cleanse yourself of what you are in with Islam." His response to this was to recite the verses of al-Nabigha:
"My Lord greets you, for it is not lawful for us * to indulge in the frivolity of women, even though religion has been affirmed."

- And Ibn Munjuyeh told me, who said: Ibn Habash narrated to us, saying: Ali ibn Zanjuyeh narrated to us, saying: Salamah narrated to us, saying: Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, saying: Ma'mar narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from Zurara ibn Musab ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, from al-Maswar ibn Makhramah, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, that he guarded a night with Umar ibn al-Khattab in the city. While they were walking, a lamp was lit for them in a house, and they went to it. When they got closer, they saw a door ajar with people inside who had loud voices and noise. Umar said, taking Abd al-Rahman's hand: "Do you know whose house this is?" He replied, "No." Umar said, "This is the house of Ri'abah ibn Umayyah ibn Khalaf, and they are now in Baythrub. What do you think?" Abd al-Rahman said: "I see that we have come to something that Allah, the Exalted, has forbidden." Then he recited: {And do not spy on one another} (Surah al-Hujurat 49:12), "and we have spied." Umar then turned away from them and left them.

- .... Abd al-Razzaq and Abd ibn Humayd and al-Khuraiti narrated in Mukarim al-Akhlaq from Zurara ibn Mus'ab ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, from al-Miswar ibn Makhramah, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf: that he was with Umar ibn al-Khattab in the city one night, and while they were walking, a lamp appeared to them in a house. So they went to it, intending to investigate. But when they drew near, they saw a door ajar and people inside with raised voices and commotion. Umar said, taking Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf by the hand: "Do you know whose house this is?" He replied, "This is the house of Rabiah ibn Umayyah ibn Khalaf, and they are drinking now." What do you think?" Umar said: "I see that we have come to what Allah has forbidden." Allah said: {And do not spy on each other} (Al-Hujurat 49:12), and we have spied. So he turned away from them and left them.
