- His statement: (And Umar), meaning Umar ibn al-Khattab, found a scent of drink from Ubaydullah, in diminutive form, who was ibn Umar.
- His statement: (A scent of drink, and I am going to ask about it, and if it is intoxicating, I will punish him): .... Abd al-Razzaq clarified this in his narrations from Ma'mar, saying: from al-Zuhri from al-Sa'ib: I witnessed Umar praying over a funeral, then he turned to us and said: "I found a scent of drink from Ubaydullah ibn Umar, and I asked him about it, and he claimed it was al-talaq. I will ask about the drink he consumed, and if it is intoxicating, I will punish him." He said: So I witnessed him punishing Ubaydullah after that. I said: And this account clarifies that the narration of Ibn Jurayj, which Abd al-Razzaq also narrated: from him, from al-Zuhri, is a summary of this story, and its wording from al-Sa'ib is that he saw Umar punishing a man he found with a scent of drink, and he punished him with a complete hadd....

- .... And from the route of Abd al-Razzaq from Ma'mar from al-Zuhri from al-Sa'ib ibn Yazid who said: I witnessed Umar ibn al-Khattab praying over a funeral, then he turned to us and said: "I smelled from Ubaydullah the scent of a drink, and I asked him about it, and he claimed it was from the perfumed oil (tilaa), and I will ask about the drink he consumed. If it was intoxicating (muskir), I will flog him." Then I witnessed him later administering the flogging to him. So, this is the most authentic chain in the world regarding Umar seeing the punishment (hadd) as obligatory on one who drinks a beverage that intoxicates in large quantities, because Ubaydullah was not intoxicated from what he drank, as he asked him and confronted him, and did not see him under the influence, rather he only saw him administering a punishment for consuming something that intoxicates. Yes, and from the perfumed oil that they consider permissible, as you will hear.
