Chapter on Kunya - Letter alif - Part One - 9518: Abu al-Azwor
Volume: (7) - Page Number: (9)

9518 - Abu al-Azwor was混淆ed by Abu Umar with the one before him, but the correct approach is to distinguish them. Abd al-Razzaq said in his Musannaf from Ibn Jurayj: I was informed that Abu Ubaydah in the Levant, meaning when he was an commander there, found Abu Jundal ibn Suhayl, Darrar ibn al-Khattab, and Abu al-Azwor—who were among the companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)—drinking alcohol. Then Abu Jundal said: {There is no blame upon those who believe and do righteous deeds for what they have eaten, if they fear Allah and believe and do righteous deeds} (Surah al-Ma'idah 5:93), and the following verses. So Abu Ubaydah wrote to Umar, informing him that Abu Jundal had challenged him with these verses. Umar wrote back to him, "What deceived Abu Jahl and those who have a dispute with you has also deceived them," and he ordered them to be punished. Then Abu al-Azwor said, "If you are going to punish us, let us meet the enemy tomorrow. If we are killed, that is fine; if we return to you, then punish us." They met the enemy and were martyred, with Abu al-Azwor and one of the others being killed.

Volume: (9) - Page Number: (244)

17078 - Abd al-Razzaq from Ibn Jurayj, who said: I was informed that Abu Ubaydah in Sham found Abu Jundal ibn Suhayl ibn Amr, Dharar ibn al-Khattab al-Muharibi, and Abu al-Azwur, who were among the companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), having drunk. Then Abu Jundal said: {“There is no blame upon those who believe and do righteous deeds for what they have eaten, if they fear Allah and believe and do righteous deeds”} (Surat al-Ma'idah 5:93}, and he continued the verse. So, Abu Ubaydah wrote to Umar that Abu Jundal had argued with him using this verse. Umar wrote back: "What tempted Abu Jundal to sin has also tempted him to argue," and he commanded them to be warned. Then Abu al-Azwur said: "Are you warning us?" Abu Ubaydah replied: "Yes." He said: "Let us meet the enemy tomorrow. If we are killed, that is fine; if we return to you, warn us then." So, Abu Jundal, Dharar, and Abu al-Azwur met the enemy, and Abu al-Azwur was martyred while the other two survived. Then Abu Jundal said: "I am lost." Abu Ubaydah wrote this to Umar, who wrote back to Abu Jundal, ignoring Abu Ubaydah: "What tempted you to sin restricted you from repentance": {“Ha. Mim. The revelation of the Book is from Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Knowing, Forgiver of sin and Accepter of repentance, Severe in punishment, Possessor of bounty. None has the right to be worshipped except Him. To Him is the final return”} (Surah Ghafir 40:1-3}, the verse.

- .... And Abd al-Razzaq mentioned from Ibn Jurayj, who said: I was informed that Abu Ubaida in Sham, along with Abu Jundal ibn Suhayl ibn Amr, Dhurar ibn al-Khattab, and Abu al-Azwar, who were among the companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), had drunk alcohol. Then Abu Jundal said: {There is no sin upon those who have believed and done righteous deeds for what they have eaten, if they have feared Allah and believed and done righteous deeds} (Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:93}, and wrote to Umar that Abu Jundal had argued with me using this verse. Umar wrote back that what led Abu Jundal to sin was also what led him to argue. So, he imposed a limit on them. Then Abu al-Azwar said, "Are you challenging us?" Abu Ubaida replied, "Yes." He said, "Let us meet the enemy tomorrow. If we are killed, then that is that; and if we return to you, impose a limit on us." So, Abu Jundal, Dhurar, and Abu al-Azwar faced the enemy, and Abu al-Azwar was martyred while the other two survived. Abu Jundal said, "A grievous error," and Abdullah ibn Suhayl is not Abu Jundal, but his brother. He was leaving Abu Ubaida, saying, "What led you to sin was a prohibition on you against repentance": {Ha, Meem. The revelation of the Book is from Allah, the Exalted, the All-Knowing. Forgiver of sin and Acceptor of repentance, Severe in punishment, Possessor of bounty. There is no deity except Him; to Him is the final return} (Surah Ghafir 40:1-3).

5676 - Abu al-Azwor al-Ahmari was one of the notable Companions, and his story is well-known regarding drinking alcohol. Abu al-Azwor, Abu Jundal, and Dharar ibn al-Khattab had interpreted the matter of alcohol in their own way. The story is also mentioned in relation to Abu Jundal, and it is narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "A minor pilgrimage (Umrah) in Ramadan is equivalent to a pilgrimage (Hajj)." The three (al-Bukhari, Muslim, and Ibn Majah) narrated this.

- .... And Abd al-Razzaq narrated from Ibn Jurayj, who said: I was informed that Abu Ubaydah in Syria found Abu Jundal ibn Suhayl, Dharr ibn al-Khattab, and Abu al-Azwār, and they were companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), drinking alcohol. Then Abu Jundal said, {There is no blame upon those who believe and do righteous deeds for what they have eaten, if they fear Allah and believe and do righteous deeds} (Surah al-Ma'idah 5:93), and he cited the entire verse. So Abu Ubaydah wrote to Umar that Abu Jundal had argued with him using this verse, and Umar wrote back to him, "What has beautified the sin for Abu Jundal has also beautified the argument." Then he ordered them to be restrained. And Abu al-Azwār said, "Are you challenging us?" Abu Ubaydah replied, "Yes." Abu al-Azwār said, "Let us meet the enemy tomorrow; if we are killed, then that is what is meant to be, and if we return to you, then restrain us." So Abu al-Azwār, Dharr, and Abu Jundal confronted the enemy, and Abu al-Azwār was martyred, while the other two were restrained. The three of them were mentioned.

- .... Al-Suri wrote to me, saying: Shu'ayb narrated to us from Saif, from al-Rabi' and Abu al-Majalid and Abu Usman and Abu Haritha who said: Abu Ubayda wrote to Umar: A group of Muslims have engaged in drinking, including Durar and Abu Jundal. So we asked them, and they interpreted it, saying: We were given a choice, and we chose. Umar asked: {So will you not desist?} (Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:91), but he did not insist on it. So Umar wrote to him: That is between us and them {So will you not desist?} (Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:91), meaning, so desist. He gathered the people, and they agreed to whip them with eighty lashes and hold those who interpreted it as having committed an act of deviation responsible in the same manner. If anyone refused, they would be killed. Umar wrote to Abu Ubayda to summon them, and if they claimed it was permissible, to kill them, and if they claimed it was forbidden, to whip them eighty times. So he sent for them and asked them in front of the people, and they said: It is forbidden. He then whipped them eighty times. The people were united, and they regretted their obstinacy.

- .... And indeed, a group of the Companions also used this verse as an excuse, having drunk alcohol, among them were: Abu Jundal, and Darrar ibn al-Khattab, and Abu al-Azwor. So Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him), who was a governor in Syria, wanted to administer the legal punishment on them. Then Abu Jundal said: {There is no blame upon those who believe and do righteous deeds for what they have eaten if they fear Allah and believe and do righteous deeds (Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:93)}. So Abu Ubaydah wrote to Umar about this and said: "Abu Jundal has confronted me with this verse." Umar wrote back to Abu Ubaydah: "What led Abu Jundal to this wrongdoing has also led him to this argument, so administer the punishment to them." When Abu Ubaydah intended to administer the punishment, Abu al-Azwor said to Abu Ubaydah: "Let us meet the enemy tomorrow; if we are killed, then that is what is decreed, and if we return to you, then you may punish us." They met the enemy and Abu al-Azwor was martyred, while the other two were punished.

- Abu Abdillah al-Hafiẓ and Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn al-Hasan al-Qadhi narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated to us, saying: Ishaq ibn Ibrahim al-Razi narrated to us, the brother-in-law of Salmah ibn al-Fadl al-Ansari, narrating to us from Salmah, who said: Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated to me from Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Harith ibn Abd Allah ibn Uyayash ibn Abi Rabi'ah, from Abd Allah ibn Urwah ibn al-Zubayr, from his father and from Yahya ibn Urwah ibn al-Zubayr, from his father, who said: Abd ibn al-Azwar, Darar ibn al-Azwar, and Abu Jundal ibn Suhayl ibn Amr were drinking in the Levant. So, Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) was informed about them. Abu Jundal said: By Allah, I only drank it on the interpretation that I heard Allah say: {There is no blame upon those who believe and do righteous deeds for what they have eaten, if they fear Allah and believe and do righteous deeds} (Surah al-Ma'idah 5:93). So, Abu Ubaydah wrote to Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) about their matter. Abd ibn al-Azwar said: Our enemy is present with us, so if you see fit to delay us until we encounter our enemy tomorrow, then Allah has honored us with martyrdom, and that will be sufficient for you, and you will not have us stand in disgrace, even if we return. You can consider what your companion commanded you regarding this, and fulfill it. Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Yes. So when the people met, Abd ibn al-Azwar was killed, a martyr. The letter returned was that of Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): Indeed, what caused Abu Jundal to fall into sin has prepared for him a justification. When my letter reaches you, establish upon them their punishment, and peace be upon you. Then Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) called them both and punished them, while Abu Jundal had a sense of honor for himself and his father. He kept telling himself until it was said that he was indeed having doubts. So, Abu Ubaydah wrote to Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): Regarding what follows, I have punished Abu Jundal with his due, and he has begun to tell himself until we fear that he may perish. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to Abu Jundal: Regarding what follows, indeed, what caused you to fall into sin has saddened you with repentance: {Ha, Meem. The revelation of the Book is from Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Knowing. Forgiver of sin and Accepting of repentance, Severe in punishment, the Possessor of bounty. There is no deity except Him; to Him is the final destination} (Surah Ghafir 40:1-3). When he read Umar's letter (may Allah be pleased with him), what was troubling him departed, as if he had been released from restraints.

13739 - Narrated from Urwah ibn al-Zubayr, who said: Abu al-Azwar, Durrar ibn al-Khattab, and Abu Jandal ibn Suhayl ibn Amr drank in Sham. So they were brought to Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah, and Abu Jandal said: "By Allah, I did not drink it except on an interpretation that I heard Allah say: {There is no blame upon those who believe and do righteous deeds for what they have eaten, if they fear Allah and believe and do righteous deeds} (Surah al-Ma'idah 5:93)." So Abu Ubaydah wrote to Umar about their situation. Abu al-Azwar said, "Indeed, we have encountered our enemy, and if you see fit to delay us until we meet our enemy tomorrow, then Allah has honored us with martyrdom, and that will be sufficient for you, without you having to establish us upon its recompense." And if we return, you may consider what your companion commanded you, and have it executed." Abu Ubaydah said, "Yes." So when the people met, Abu al-Azwar was killed as a martyr. The letter returned to Umar's letter, "Indeed, what brought Abu Jandal into sin has prepared for him a justification. And when my letter reaches you, establish upon them their punishment, and peace." So Abu Ubaydah summoned them both and punished them, while Abu Jandal had a sense of honor and respect for his father. He kept telling himself until it was said that he had become anxious. Abu Ubaydah wrote to Umar, "Peace be upon you. I have punished Abu Jandal with his due, and he is telling himself that he is in danger, and we fear for him that he may perish." Umar wrote to Abu Jandal, "Peace be upon you. What brought you into sin has been followed by repentance: {Ha, Meem. The revelation of the Book is from Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Knowing. Forgiver of sin and Accepting of repentance, Severe in punishment, the Possessor of abundance. There is no deity except Him; to Him is the final destination} (Surah Ghafir 40:1-3)." When he read Umar's letter, what was with him departed, as if he had been released from a restraint.

- Abu al-Qasim al-Mustamli narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Hafiz Abu Abd Allah al-Hafiz and Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn al-Hasan al-Qadi both said: Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Yaqub narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated to us, saying: Ishaq ibn Ibrahim al-Razi, the father-in-law of Salmah ibn al-Fadl al-Ansari, narrated to us: Salmah narrated to me, saying: Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated to me from Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Harith ibn Abdullah ibn Uyayash ibn Abi Rubi'a, from Abdullah ibn Urwah ibn al-Zubair, from his father, and from Yahya ibn Urwah from his father, who said: Abd ibn al-Azwar, Darar ibn al-Khattab, and Abu Jundal ibn Suhayl ibn Amr drank in Shaam (Syria), and they were brought to Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah. Abu Jundal said: "By Allah, I did not drink it except in the interpretation that I heard Allah say:" {“There is no blame upon those who believe and do righteous deeds for what they have eaten, if they fear Allah and believe and do righteous deeds”} (Al-Ma'idah 5:93). So, Abu Ubaydah wrote to Umar, commanding them. Abd ibn al-Azwar said: "Indeed, our enemy is present. If you think it best to delay us until we meet our enemy tomorrow, for Allah may honor us with martyrdom, that will be enough for you," and "do not keep us in humiliation, even if we return. You may consider what your companion commanded you, and see if you will carry it out." Abu Ubaydah said: "Yes." So, when the people met, Abd ibn al-Azwar was killed, a martyr. The letter returned to Umar's letter: "Indeed, what led Abu Jundal to the transgression has been prepared for him with an argument. When my letter reaches you, impose on them their penalty, and peace be upon you." Then Abu Ubaydah called for them, and he punished them, while Abu Jundal had a position and his father. He began to think to himself until it was said that he had begun to experience whispers. So, Abu Ubaydah wrote to Umar: "As for what follows, I have struck Abu Jundal with his penalty, and he has begun to think to himself until we fear for him that he will perish." Umar wrote to Abu Jundal: "As for what follows, indeed, what led you to the transgression has been reserved for you, to repent: {Ha, Meem. The revelation of the Book is from Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Knowing. Forgiver of sin and Accepter of repentance, Severe in punishment, the Possessor of abundance. There is no deity except Him; to Him is the final destination} (Ghafir 40:1-3)." When he read Umar's letter, what was with him departed, as if he had been released from a restraint.
