Chapter on Kunyas - Letter Alif - Part One - 9518: Abu al-Azwār

Volume: (7) - Page Number: (9)

9518 - Abu al-Azwār was last seen being confused by Abu Umar with the one preceding him, but the correct approach is to differentiate them. Abd al-Razzaq said in his Musannaf from Ibn Jurayj, who reported: that Abu Ubaydah in the Levant, meaning when he was an emir over it, found Abu Jundal ibn Suhayl, Dharr ibn al-Khattab, and Abu al-Azwār, all from the companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), having drunk wine. So Abu Jundal said, {“There is no blame upon those who believe and do righteous deeds for what they have eaten, if they fear Allah and believe and do righteous deeds”} (Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:93), and the verses continued. So Abu Ubaydah wrote to Umar, informing him that Abu Jundal had challenged him with these verses. Umar wrote back to him, "What was made attractive to Abu Jahl in sin, and to those who have a dispute, will be dealt with," and he imposed strict limits on them. Abu al-Azwār then said, "If you are going to impose limits on us, then let us meet the enemy tomorrow. If we are killed, that is fine, and if we return to you, then impose limits on us." They confronted the enemy and were martyred, including Abu al-Azwār and one of the other two.

17078 - Abd al-Razzaq from Ibn Jurayj, who said: I was informed that Abu Ubayda in Sham found Abu Jundal ibn Suhayl ibn Amr, Dharar ibn al-Khattab al-Muharibi, and Abu al-Azwār, all of whom were from the companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), drinking. Abu Jundal said, {“There is no blame upon those who believe and do righteous deeds for what they have consumed, if they fear Allah and believe and do righteous deeds”} (Surah al-Ma'idah 5:93), and he wrote this to Umar, saying that Abu Jundal had challenged him with this verse. Umar wrote back: "What beautified the sin for Abu Jundal also beautified the challenge," and commanded that they be punished. Abu al-Azwār said, "Are you challenging us?" Abu Ubayda replied, "Yes." He said, "Let us meet the enemy tomorrow; if we are killed, then that is that, and if we return to you, punish us." Thus, Abu Jundal, Dharar, and Abu al-Azwār encountered the enemy, and Abu al-Azwār was martyred while the other two survived. Abu Jundal then said, "I am doomed." Abu Ubayda wrote this to Umar, who wrote back to Abu Jundal and left Abu Ubayda: "What beautified the sin for you has made repentance prohibited upon you: {“Ha. Meem. The revelation of the Book is from Allah, the Mighty, the All-Knowing. Forgiver of sin and Accepting of repentance, Severe in punishment, Possessor of abundance. There is no deity except Him; to Him is the final destination”} (Surah Ghafir 40:1-3)."

- .... And Abd al-Razzaq mentioned from Ibn Jurayj, who said: I was informed that Abu Ubaidah in Sham, along with Abu Jundal ibn Suhail ibn Amr, Darar ibn al-Khattab, and Abu al-Azwir, all of whom were companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), had drunk wine. Abu Jundal then said: {There is no blame upon those who believe and do righteous deeds for what they have eaten, if they are mindful of God and believe and do righteous deeds} (Surah al-Ma'idah 5:93), and he quoted the verse. So, Abu Ubaidah wrote to Umar that Abu Jundal had argued with him using this verse. Umar replied that what had deluded Abu Jundal about his sin had also deluded him about his argument, so set a limit for them. Abu al-Azwir said: "Are you challenging us?" Abu Ubaidah replied: "Yes." He said: "Let us meet the enemy tomorrow; if we are killed, then so be it, and if we return to you, then impose a limit on us." Abu Jundal, Darar, and Abu al-Azwir met the enemy, and Abu al-Azwir was martyred while the other two survived. Abu Jundal then said: "A gross error," and added, "Abd Allah ibn Suhail is not Abu Jundal, but rather his brother." He left Abu Ubaidah, saying: "What deluded you about your sin was a prohibition on you from repentance: {Ham. A revelation of the Book from God, the Exalted in Might, the All-Knowing. Forgiver of sin and Accepter of repentance, Severe in punishment, the Possessor of abundance. There is no deity except Him; to Him is the final destination} (Surah Ghafir 40:1-3)."

5676 - Abu al-Azwar al-Ahmari was one of the notable companions, and his story is well-known regarding drinking alcohol. Abu al-Azwar, Abu Jandal, and Darar ibn al-Khattab had interpreted the situation in relation to alcohol. The story is also mentioned in relation to Abu Jandal, and it was narrated from the Prophet (peace be upon him) that he said: "An Umrah in Ramadan is equivalent to a Hajj." The three (al-Bukhari, Muslim, and Ibn Majah) narrated this.

- .... Abd al-Razzaq reported from Ibn Jurayj, who said: "I was informed that Abu Ubaydah in Syria found Abu Jundal ibn Suhail, Dharar ibn al-Khattab, and Abu al-Azwur, all companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), drinking wine." Then Abu Jundal said: {“There is no blame upon those who believe and do righteous deeds for what they have eaten, if they fear Allah and believe and do righteous deeds”} (Surah al-Ma'idah 5:93), all the verses. So, Abu Ubaydah wrote to Umar that Abu Jundal had argued with him using this verse, and Umar wrote back to him, "What made sin appear attractive to Abu Jundal has also made argument attractive to him," and he set limits for them. Then Abu al-Azwur said, "Are you setting limits for us?" Abu Ubaydah replied, "Yes." Abu al-Azwur said, "Let us meet the enemy tomorrow; if we are killed, that is fine, and if we return to you, then set limits for us." Abu al-Azwur, Dharar, and Abu Jundal confronted the enemy, and Abu al-Azwur was martyred, while the other two were left unharmed. All three of them mentioned this event.

- .... And indeed, a group of the Companions also used this verse as an excuse, having consumed alcohol, among them were: Abu Jundal, Darar ibn al-Khattab, and Abu al-Azwor. So Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him), who was a governor in Syria, wanted to impose a legal penalty on them. Then Abu Jundal said: {There is no blame upon those who believe and do righteous deeds for what they have eaten if they fear Allah and believe and do righteous deeds} (Surah al-Ma'idah 5:93). So Abu Ubaydah wrote to Umar about this, saying: Abu Jundal has cited me this verse as a reason. Umar wrote back to Abu Ubaydah: "What has beautified the sin for Abu Jundal has also beautified the dispute for him, so impose a penalty on them." When Abu Ubaydah intended to punish them, Abu al-Azwor said to him: "Let us face the enemy tomorrow. If we are killed, then that is what is destined, and if we return to you, then impose a penalty on us." So they encountered the enemy, and Abu al-Azwor was martyred while the other two were punished.

Chapter on Those Who Claim That Punishments Are Not to Be Carried Out in the Land of War Until They Return
Volume: (9) - Page Number: (105/106)

- Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz and Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn al-Hasan al-Qadi both said: Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated to us, saying: Ishaq ibn Ibrahim al-Razi, the brother-in-law of Salamah ibn al-Fadl al-Ansari, narrated to us, saying: Salamah narrated to me, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, from Abdul-Rahman ibn al-Harith ibn Abdullah ibn Uyayash ibn Abi Rabi'ah, from Abdullah ibn Urwah al-Zubayr, from his father and from Yahya ibn Urwah ibn al-Zubayr, from his father, who said: Abdul ibn al-Azwar, Dharr ibn al-Azwar, and Abu Jandal ibn Suhail ibn Amr were drinking in Shaam, and they were brought to Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him). Abu Jandal said: By Allah, I did not drink it except with the interpretation that I heard Allah say: {There is no blame upon those who believe and do righteous deeds for what they have eaten, if they fear Allah and believe and do righteous deeds} (Surah al-Ma'idah 5:93). So Abu Ubaydah wrote to Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) about their situation, and Abdul ibn al-Azwar said: Our enemy is now present, so if you see fit to delay us until we meet our enemy tomorrow, then Allah has honored us with martyrdom, that will be enough for you, and you would not be exposing us to disgrace by having us return. If you look to what your companion instructed you, and you carry it out, Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Yes. So when the people met, Abdul ibn al-Azwar was killed, a martyr. The letter returned to Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): "Indeed, what led Abu Jandal to fall into sin has been prepared for him within reason." When this reaches you, impose upon them their punishment, and peace." Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) then called them both and punished them, while Abu Jandal had some honor and his father's status. He would contemplate until it was said that he was whispering to himself. Abu Ubaydah wrote to Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): "As for what follows, I have punished Abu Jandal, and he has begun to think to himself, to the point that we fear he may perish." Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to Abu Jandal: "As for what follows, indeed, what led you to sin is saddened by your repentance: {Ham. A revelation of the Book from Allah, the Mighty, the All-Knowing. Forgiver of sin and Accepting of repentance, Severe in punishment, the Possessor of abounding goodness. There is no deity except Him; to Him is the ultimate return} (Surah Ghafir 40:1-3)." When he read Umar's letter (may Allah be pleased with him), what was upon him departed, as if he had been released from a restraint.

13739 - Narrated from Urwah ibn al-Zubayr, who said: Abu al-Azwar drank, and Dharr ibn al-Khattab and Abu Jundal ibn Suhayl ibn Amr drank in Sham, and they were brought to Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah. Then Abu Jundal said: "By Allah, I only drank it based on an interpretation, as I heard Allah say: {There is no blame upon those who believe and do righteous deeds for what they have eaten, if they fear Allah and believe and do righteous deeds} (Surah al-Ma'idah 5:93)." Abu Ubaydah wrote to Umar about their situation. Then Abu al-Azwar said: "He has brought us to face our enemy, so if you see fit to delay us until we meet our enemy tomorrow, for Allah may honor us with martyrdom, that will suffice you, and you will not have to hold us accountable for it, even if we return. You may consider what your companion commanded you, and if you carry it out, it will be well." Abu Ubaydah said: "Yes." So when the people met, Abu al-Azwar was killed as a martyr. The letter returned to Umar's letter, stating that what caused Abu Jundal to stumble into sin had now prepared for him a justification. When this letter reaches you, impose their punishment upon them, and peace be upon you." Then Abu Ubaydah called for both of them and punished them, while Abu Jundal had a sense of honor and his father did as well. He kept telling himself he would overcome it until it was said that he had begun to doubt. Abu Ubaydah wrote to Umar: "Peace be upon you. I have punished Abu Jundal, and he is now telling himself he will overcome it, but we fear for him that he may perish." Umar wrote to Abu Jundal: "Peace be upon you. What led you to sin has been followed by repentance: {Hameem. The revelation of the Book is from Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Knowing, Forgiver of sin and Accepting of repentance, Severe in punishment, the Possessor of abundance. There is no deity except Him; to Him is the final destination} (Surah Ghafir 40:1-3)." When he read Umar's letter, what had been troubling him disappeared, as if he had been unbound from a restraint.

- Abu al-Qasim al-Mustamli narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Hafiz Abu Abd Allah the Hafiz and Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn al-Hasan al-Qadi both said: Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated to us, saying: Ishaq ibn Ibrahim al-Razi narrated to us, the father-in-law of Salmah ibn al-Fadl al-Ansari, narrated to us, from Salmah, who said: Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated to me from Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Harith ibn Abdullah ibn Uyayish ibn Abi Rubi'ah, from Abdullah ibn Urwah ibn al-Zubayr, from his father, and from Yahya ibn Urwah from his father. He said: Abd ibn al-Azwar, Dhurar ibn al-Khattab, and Abu Jandal ibn Suhayl ibn Amr were drinking in Sham (Syria) when they were brought before Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah. Abu Jandal said: By Allah, I did not drink it except on the interpretation that I heard Allah say: {There is no blame upon those who believe and do righteous deeds for what they have eaten, if they fear Allah and believe and do righteous deeds} (Surah al-Ma'idah 5:93). So Abu Ubaydah wrote to Umar, commanding them. Then Abd ibn al-Azwar said: We have an enemy present with us, and if you think it best to delay us until we meet our enemy tomorrow, perhaps Allah will honor us with martyrdom, and that will be enough for you. And He did not keep us in disgrace, even if we return. You may consider what your companion commanded you and carry it out. Abu Ubaydah said: Yes. So when the people met, Abd ibn al-Azwar was killed, a martyr. The letter returned to Umar's writing: What caused Abu Jandal to fall into error has prepared for him a justification in it. So when my letter reaches you, impose on them their due punishment, and peace be upon you. Then Abu Ubaydah called them both and punished them, while Abu Jandal had a position of honor and his father. He kept telling himself until it was said that he was beginning to have doubts. Abu Ubaydah wrote to Umar: As for what follows, I have struck Abu Jandal with his punishment, and he has begun to tell himself until we fear for him that he is finished. Umar wrote to Abu Jandal: As for what follows, what caused you to fall into error has kept repentance in store for you: {Ha. Meem. The revelation of the Book is from Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Knowing. Forgiver of sin and Accepter of repentance, Severe in punishment, the Possessor of abundance. There is no deity except Him. To Him is the final destination} (Surah Ghafir 40:1-3). When he read Umar's letter, what was upon him departed, as if he had been released from a restraint.
