3778 - Alqamah ibn Ulaathah ibn Awf ibn al-Ahwas ibn Ja'far ibn Kulab ibn Rabiah ibn Amir ibn Sa'sa'ah al-'Amiri al-Kulabi was one of the notables of the Banu Rabiah ibn Amir and was among those whose hearts were inclined [towards Islam]. He was a leader in his people, wise, and patient, though he did not possess great generosity. He was the one who had a confrontation with Amir ibn al-Tufayl ibn Malik ibn Ja'far ibn Kulab, and both were of the Kulabi tribe, and he challenged him; the story is well-known.
And when the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) returned from Ta'if, Alqamah apostatized and joined the Levant. But when the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) passed away, he returned hastily until he encamped among the Banu Kulab ibn Rabiah. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) sent a military detachment to him, but he fled from them, and the Muslim forces took his family and brought them to Abu Bakr. They denied that they were in any way connected to Alqamah's situation, and nothing reached Abu Bakr from them that he would dislike, so he released them. Later, Alqamah embraced Islam, and it was accepted from him, and his conversion was good. Umar appointed him as the governor of Hauran, and he died there. Al-Hutay'ah went out to him, but Alqamah died before Al-Hutay'ah could reach him. Alqamah made a bequest to Al-Hutay'ah as if he were one of his own children, and Al-Hutay'ah expressed this in verses:
There was nothing between me and meeting you safely, * and between the grave, except a few nights.
