4805 - 'Umar ibn Sa'id ibn Sinan informed us in Manbij, saying: 'Ahmad ibn Abi Bakr narrated to us, from Malik, from Yahya ibn Sa'id, from 'Umar ibn Kathir ibn Aflah, from Abu Muhammad, the freedman of Qatadah, from Abu Qatadah al-Ansari, then al-Sulami, who said: We went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) in the year of Hunayn. When we met, there was a rout of the Muslims. I saw a man among the polytheists overpowering a man from the Muslims. So, I turned my back until I approached him from behind and struck him on the nape of his neck with a blow that severed his armor. He then turned to me, embraced me, and I felt a breath from him that smelled of death, and then death overtook him.
Then he released me, and I joined 'Umar ibn al-Khattab and said to him: What is the matter with the people? He replied: It is the command of Allah. Then the people returned, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: Whoever kills a man with a claim against him will have his belongings. Abu Qatadah said: So I stood up and then said: Who will testify for me? Then I sat down. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: Whoever kills a man with a claim against him will have his belongings. I stood up and said: Who will testify for me? Then I sat down. He said it a third time, and I stood up. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: What is wrong with you, Abu Qatadah? So, I narrated the story to him. A man from the crowd said: He speaks the truth, O Messenger of Allah, and the belongings of that slain man are with me. So, be pleased with it from me. Abu Bakr said: May Allah be displeased! Is it possible that a lion from the lions of Allah, fighting for Allah and His Messenger, is denied his belongings? The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: Then give it to him. So, Abu Qatadah said: He gave it to me, and I sold the armor and bought a grove from it in Banu Salimah, for that was the first property I acquired in Islam.
