- .... 'Amr ibn Sufyan al-Thaqafi witnessed the Battle of Hunayn with the polytheists and is counted among those from the Levant. Al-Qasim Abu Abd al-Rahman narrated from him. Thus, al-Hakim Abu Ahmad mentioned it. He then converted to Islam after Hunayn. It is narrated from him that he said: When the Muslims were defeated on the day of Hunayn, there remained with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) only al-Abbas and Abu Sufyan ibn al-Harith. He then took a handful of dust and threw it in their faces, and it seemed to us that every tree and stone was a horseman seeking to attack us. My horse could not keep up with them until I entered Ta'if. Ibn Mundah and Abu Nu'aym both recorded this.

- .... And in another narration, he said: When the Day of Hunayn came, I saw a man from the Muslims fighting a man from the polytheists, and another polytheist sneaking up behind him to kill him. So, I hurried to the one who was sneaking up and he raised his hand to strike me, and I struck his hand, cutting it off. Then he seized me and pulled me into a tight embrace until I was frightened, and then he released me, loosened, and pushed him away. I then killed him. And the Muslims were defeated, and they fled with me. Suddenly, I saw Umar ibn al-Khattab among the people, and I said to him: What is the matter with the people? He said: The command of Allah. Then the people began to return to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) ....
