12930 - Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz, Abu Bakr, Abu Zakariya, and Abu Said narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated to us, al-Rabi ibn Sulayman narrated to us, al-Shafi'i narrated to us, and Malik narrated to us, from Yahya ibn Sa'id, from Umar ibn Kathir ibn Aflah, from Abu Muhammad, the freedman of Abu Qatadah, from Abu Qatadah al-Ansari, who said: We went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) in the year of Hunayn, and when we met, the Muslims had a setback. I saw a man from the polytheists on top of a man from the Muslims. I turned to him and approached him from behind, and struck him on the nape of his neck. He turned to me, squeezed me in an embrace, and I felt the scent of death from it, then death overtook him. He released me, and I caught up with Umar ibn al-Khattab and said to him: What's happening with the people? He replied: It is the command of Allah. Then the people returned, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: Whoever kills a person and has proof against him, his armor is theirs. I stood up and said: Who will bear witness for me? Then I sat down. He repeated it a second time, and I stood up and said: Who will bear witness for me? Then I sat down. He repeated it a third time, I stood up for the third time, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: What is wrong with you, O Abu Qatadah? I narrated the story to him. Then a man from the people said: You speak the truth, O Messenger of Allah, and the armor of that slain man is with me. Satisfy him with it. Abu Bakr said: May Allah deny it then! Is he to go to a lion of the lions of Allah, fighting for Allah, and you give him your spoils? The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: You are right, so give it to him. Abu Qatadah said: So he gave it to me, and I sold the armor and bought a small farm in Banu Salimah with it. This was the first property I acquired in Islam.
