- .... And from Abu Qa'tadah, who said: We went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) on the day of Hunayn. When we met, the Muslims suffered a setback. He said: I saw a man from the polytheists overpowering a man from the Muslims, so I turned to him until I approached him from behind and struck him on the muscle of his shoulder. He turned to me and embraced me tightly, from which I sensed the smell of death, then death overtook him, and he released me, so I joined Umar ibn al-Khattab, who said: What is wrong with the people? I said: It is the command of Allah. Then the people began to return ....

- .... And this encounter took place before the defeat. His statement: So I saw a man from the polytheists overpowering a man from the Muslims. Al-Hafiz said: I did not find their names. His statement: On a rope over his shoulder. The rope over the shoulder is a binding, and the shoulder (at-‘atiq) is the area where the cloak (al-ridāʾ) rests on the shoulder. His statement: I sensed from her a smell of death, meaning from its intensity, and this indicated that this polytheist was extremely strong. His statement: So he sent me, meaning he released me. His statement: So I caught up with Umar ibn al-Khattab etc., in the context, is an omission clarified by the other narration from his hadith in Bukhari and elsewhere, worded as: Then I killed him, and the Muslims were defeated, and I was defeated with them. Suddenly, I saw Umar ibn al-Khattab. His statement: The command of Allah, meaning the decree of Allah and what He had ordained.
