492 - Muawiyah ibn Amr narrated to us, saying: Zaidah narrated to us, from Asim, from Shuqayq, who said: Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf met al-Walid ibn Uqbah and al-Walid said to him: "What is it with you that I see you have become distant from the Commander of the Faithful, Uthman (ra)?" Abd al-Rahman replied, "Tell him that I did not flee on the Day of Ainayn." Asim said, he meant the Day of Uhud, and I did not fail to attend on the Day of Badr, nor did I neglect any of the practices of Umar (ra)." So al-Walid went and informed Uthman (ra) of this. Uthman (ra) replied, "As for his statement, 'I did not flee on the Day of Ainayn,' how can he be reproached for a sin when Allah has forgiven it?" Then he recited: {Indeed, those who turned back among you on the day when the two armies met, it was Satan who caused them to slip because of some of what they had earned, and Allah had certainly forgiven them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing} (Surah Al-Imran 3:155). And regarding his statement that he did not attend the Battle of Badr, I was indeed mourning Ruqayyah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), when she died, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had assigned me a share. Whoever the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) assigned a share to had witnessed it. As for his statement that he did not neglect the practices of Umar (ra), I am unable to do so, nor is he." So go to him and tell him this.

5738 - عufan narrated to us, saying: Abu 'Awanah narrated to us, saying: Uthman ibn Abdullah ibn Muhib narrated to us, who said: A man came from Egypt to perform pilgrimage to the House. He saw some people sitting and asked, "Who are these people?" They replied, "They are Quraysh." He asked, "Who is the elder among them?" They said, "Abdullah ibn Umar." He said, "O son of Umar, I am going to ask you about something, or I will bring you to bear witness, or I will ask you, in honor of this sacred House: Do you know that Uthman fled on the Day of Uhud?" He replied, "Yes." The man continued, "Do you know that he was absent from Badr and did not witness it?" He said, "Yes." The man asked, "And do you know that he was absent from the Pledge of Ridwan?" He said, "Yes." The Egyptian then exclaimed, and Ibn Umar said: "Come, let me clarify for you what you asked me about. As for his fleeing on the Day of Uhud, bear witness that Allah has pardoned him and forgiven him." He continued, "As for his absence from Badr, he was married to the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and she fell ill. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said to him, 'You have the reward of a man who witnessed Badr and his share.' As for his absence from the Pledge of Ridwan, if there had been anyone more esteemed in the heart of Mecca than Uthman, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) would have sent him. The Pledge of Ridwan occurred after Uthman departed, and he (the Prophet) struck his hand upon his own, saying, 'This is for Uthman.'" Ibn Umar also said, "Take this with you now."

737 - Abdullah narrated to us, who said: My father narrated to us, saying: Hashim ibn al-Qasim narrated to us, saying: Abu Muawiya, meaning Shayban, narrated to us from Uthman ibn Abdullah, who said: A man came from Egypt who had performed the Hajj to the House and saw a group of people sitting. He said: Who are these? They said: These are the Quraysh. He said: Who is the elder among them? They said: Ibn Umar. So he went to him and said: O Ibn Umar, if I ask you about something, will you inform me? He said: Yes. He said: I beseech you by the sanctity of this House do you know that Uthman fled on the day of Uhud? He said: Yes. He said: Do you know that he was absent from Badr and did not witness it? He said: Yes. He said: Do you understand that he, meaning Uthman, was absent from the Pledge of Ridwan and did not witness it? He said: Yes. Then he exclaimed: Allahu Akbar (Allah is Greatest)! Ibn Umar said to him: Come, let me tell you and clarify what you asked me about: As for his fleeing on the day of Uhud, I bear witness that Allah has indeed forgiven him and overlooked it. As for his absence from Badr, it was because he had the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) under his care, and she was ill. So the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said to him: "You will have the reward of a man who witnessed Badr, and its share is yours." And as for his absence from the Pledge of Ridwan, if there had been anyone more honorable in the heart of Mecca than Uthman, he would have sent him, but Uthman was sent. The Pledge of Ridwan took place after Uthman had gone to Mecca. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) raised his right hand and said: "This is the hand of Uthman," and he struck it with his other hand and said: "This is for Uthman." Ibn Umar said to him: "Take these three with you."

826 - Ibrahim narrated to us, Quthna said, Hajjaj said, Abu 'Awaniyah narrated to us, from Uthman ibn Abdullah ibn Muwahhib, who said: A man from the people of Egypt came who had performed Hajj to the House and saw people sitting, so he said: Who are these people? They said: Quraysh. He asked: Who is the elder among them? They said: Abdullah ibn Umar. He then said, O son of Umar, I am going to ask you about something, and I ask you by Allah, in the sanctity of this House, to tell me the truth: Do you know that Uthman fled on the day of Uhud? He replied: Yes. The man asked: Do you know that Uthman was absent from Badr and did not witness it? He said: Yes. Do you know that Uthman was absent from the Pledge of Ridwan and did not witness it? He said: Yes, and he exclaimed: Allahu Akbar! (God is the Greatest). Abdullah ibn Umar said: Come, let me clarify for you everything you asked me about: As for his fleeing on the day of Uhud, bear witness that Allah has forgiven him and pardoned him. And regarding his absence from the Pledge of Ridwan, if there had been anyone more honored in the heart of Mecca than Uthman, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) would have sent him in his place. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent Uthman to Mecca, and he said with his right hand: This is Uthman's hand, and he struck it upon his (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) hand, saying: This is for Uthman. Abdullah ibn Umar said to the man: Take this with you now.
