Hadith No: 1

Narrated 'Uthman bin 'Abdullah bin Mawhab:

"A man among the people of Egypt performed Hajj to the House, and saw a group sitting, so he said: 'Who are these?' They said: 'The Quraish.' He said: 'So who is this old man?' They said: 'Ibn 'Umar.' So he went to him and said: 'I will ask you about something, so inform me. I ask you by Allah! By the sanctity of this House! Do you know that 'Uthman fled on the Day of (the battle of) Uhud?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Do you know that he was absent from the Pledge of Ar-Ridwan, that he did not witness it?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Do you know that he was absent on the Day of (the battle of) Badr and did not participate in it?' He said: 'Yes.' So he said: 'Allah is Great' So Ibn 'Umar said to him: 'Come, so I can clarify to you what you have asked about. As for his fleeing on the Day of (the battle of) Uhud, then I bear witness that Allah has pardoned him and forgiven him. As for his being absent on the Day of (the battle of) Badr, then he was married to the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (S). So the Messenger of Allah (S) said to him: "You have the reward of a man who participated in (the battle of) Badr, and his share (spoils of war)." [And he ordered him to stay behind with her, as she was ill]. As for his being absent from the Pledge of Ar-Ridwan, then if there was anyone more revered in Makkah than 'Uthman, then the Messenger of Allah (S) would have sent him instead of 'Uthman. The Messenger of Allah (S) sent 'Uthman [to Makkah], and the Pledge of Ar-Ridwan was after 'Uthman had departed for Makkah." He said: "So the Messenger of Allah (S) said with his right hand: "This is the hand of 'Uthman," and he put it upon his own hand, and said: "This is for 'Uthman."' He said to him: "Go now, and take this (clarification) with you."

4594 - Abu Abd Allah Ibn Ya'qub narrated to us, saying: Yahya ibn Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, saying: Musaddad narrated to us, saying: al-Mu'tamir ibn Sulayman narrated to us, saying: I heard Kulayb ibn Wa'il say: Khabib ibn Abi Malikah narrated to me, saying: A man came to Ibn Umar (ra) and said: "Did you witness Uthman at the Bai'at al-Ridwan (Pledge of Good Pleasure)?" He said: "No." The man said: "Did he witness Badr?" He said: "No." The man asked: "Was he among those whom Satan caused to stumble?" He replied: "Yes." Then the man stood up, and some of the people said to him: "This one now claims that you spoke ill of Uthman." He said: "That is what he says." The man said: "Return to him." So they said: "Did you understand what you said to him?" He replied: "Yes." They asked: "I asked you if Uthman witnessed the Bai'at al-Ridwan, and you said no. I asked you if he witnessed Badr, and you said no. I asked you if he was among those whom Satan caused to stumble, and you said yes." He said: "As for the Bai'at al-Ridwan, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) stood and said: 'Uthman has gone on an errand for Allah and the errand of His Messenger,' so a share was allotted to him, and none other who was absent was given a share.'" {Indeed, those who turned back among you on the day the two crowds met were caused to stumble by Satan because of some of what they had earned, and Allah had certainly overlooked them. Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing} (Surah Al-Imran 3:155). This is a hadith with a sound chain of transmission, and they did not include it.
