8435 - Isma'il ibn Mas'ud narrated to us, saying: Khalid narrated to us from Shu'bah, from Abu Ishaq, from al-'Ala', who said: A man asked Ibn Umar about Uthman. He said: He was one of those who took charge on the day the two groups met, and Allah then accepted his repentance. Then he committed a sin and they killed him. The man asked him about Ali, and he replied: Do not ask about him; do you not see his status with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)?

8436 - Hilal ibn al-'Ala ibn Hilal narrated to me, saying: Al-Husayn narrated to us, saying: Al-Zuhair narrated to us, from Abu Ishaq, from al-'Ala ibn 'Arar, who said: I asked Abdullah ibn Umar, "Would you not tell me about Ali and Uthman?" He said: "As for Ali, this is his house, one of the houses of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and I will not speak to you about him from anything other than this. As for Uthman, he committed a great sin on the Day of Uhud, but Allah forgave him. He sinned among you in a minor matter, and you killed him."

8437 - Ahmad ibn Sulayman narrated to us, saying: Ubaydullah narrated to us, saying: Israel narrated to us, from Abu Ishaq, from al-Alai ibn Arar, who said: I asked Ibn Umar while he was in the Mosque of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) about Ali and Uthman. He replied: As for Ali, do not ask me about him, but look at his place from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny); there is no house in the mosque except his. And as for Uthman, he committed a grave sin on the day the two groups met, but Allah forgave him and pardoned him. He committed a sin among you that was lesser, and you killed him.
