- .... Ahmad and Ibn al-Mundhir narrated from Shaqiq who said: Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf met al-Walid ibn Uqbah, and al-Walid said to him: "What is it with you that I see you being harsh with the Commander of the Faithful, Uthman?" Abd al-Rahman replied to him, "Tell him I did not flee on the Day of Ain Ain." He meant the Day of Uhud, "and I did not neglect the Battle of Badr, nor did I abandon the Sunnah of Umar." So al-Walid went and informed Uthman of this, who said: "As for his statement that I did not flee on the Day of Ain Ain, how can he reproach me with that when Allah has forgiven me?" He continued, {“Indeed, those who turned back among you on the day the two armies met were only seduced by Satan because of some of what they had earned, and Allah had certainly forgiven them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing”} (Al-Imran 3:155). "And as for his statement that I neglected the Battle of Badr, I was indeed sick, nursing Ruqayyah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), until she died. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had assigned me a share, and whoever the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) assigned a share to was present. As for his statement that I did not adhere to the Sunnah of Umar, I cannot manage it, nor can he." And he informed him of this.
