Al-Tabarani - al-Mu'jam al-Awsat - Chapter on the letter Meem - Those Named Mu'adh
Volume: (8) - Page Number: (232)
8494 - Mu'adh said: Ishaq narrated to us, quoting Abd al-Wahid ibn Ziyad, who said: Kulaib ibn Wa'il narrated to us, from Hani' ibn Qays, who said: I was sitting beside Ibn Umar when a man came to him and said: "O Abu Abd al-Rahman, inform me about Uthman. Did he witness Badr?" He answered: "No." The man continued: "Did he witness the Pledge of Ridwan?" He replied: "No."
The man then asked: "Was he among those who took charge on the day the two armies met?" He said: "Yes." Then the man turned away, and Abdullah ibn Umar said to the man: "Is this one now going to tell people that you spoke ill of Uthman?" The man replied: "Did he do that?" Abdullah said: "Yes, that's what he claimed." Then he told the man to return, saying: "Do you know what you just said?" The man replied: "I asked you if Uthman witnessed Badr, and you said no. I asked if he witnessed the Pledge of Ridwan, and you said no.
I also asked if he was among those who took charge on the day the two armies met, and you said yes." Abdullah ibn Umar continued: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said on the day of Badr: 'Uthman was delayed due to a task from Allah and a task from the Messenger of Allah.'" Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) struck for him a share, but did not strike a share for anyone else who was absent, except for him. He said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent Uthman on the day of the Pledge of Ridwan to Mecca to seek permission for the sacrificial animals and entry into Mecca, so Uthman was with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) during the Pledge of Ridwan, intending to enter Mecca." He said: "Uthman is in the service of Allah and His Messenger, so I will pledge to Allah on his behalf." Then he clapped one hand over the other. Allah said: {Indeed, those who turned away from you on the day the two armies met were caused to stumble by Satan because of some of what they had earned. And Allah had certainly forgiven them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing} (Surah Al-Imran 3:155).
"So go, for Allah has forgiven," Abdullah ibn Umar added, "Now go and strive against him as best you can." None of those who reported this hadith in this chain of narration between Kulaib ibn Wa'il and Habib ibn Abi Miliika, except for Abd al-Wahid ibn Ziyad. Zaydah and others also narrated it from Kulaib ibn Wa'il, from Habib ibn Abi Miliika, from Ibn Umar. Habib ibn Abi Miliika was known as Abu Thawr al-Hadani and was from Murad.
