- Abu al-Faraj Abdul Rahman ibn Abi Umar ibn Qudamah al-Maqdisi informed us of this in Damascus, and Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Isma'il ibn al-Anmati informed us in Egypt, both saying: Abu al-Yemen Zayd ibn al-Hasan al-Kindi informed us, who said: Al-Qadi Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Abd al-Baqi al-Ansari informed us, who said: Al-Hasan ibn Ali al-Jawhari informed us, who said: Abu al-Husayn Muhammad ibn al-Mudhaffar al-Hafiz informed us, who said: Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Sulayman al-Baghandi informed us, who said: Abu Nu'aym Ubayd ibn Hisham al-Halabi informed us, who said: Al-Fazari narrated to us from Kulaib ibn Wa'il from Hani' ibn Qays from Habib ibn Abi Mulaykah, who said: I was sitting with Abdullah ibn Umar when a man came to him and said: "O Abu Abd al-Rahman, did you witness Uthman at the Bay'at al-Ridwan?" He said: "No." The man said: "Did you witness him on the Day of Badr?" He said: "No." The man asked: "Was he among those who took charge on the day the two groups met?" He said: "Yes." The man left, and it was said to Ibn Umar: "This one will return to his companions and inform them that you have spoken ill of Uthman." He said: "Or did I?" The other replied: "That is what he says." He said: "Bring the man to me." So they brought him back. Ibn Umar said: "Did you remember what I told you?" The man replied: "Yes. I asked you about such and such, and you said such and such, and I asked you about such and such, and you said such and such." Ibn Umar said: "As for the Bay'at al-Ridwan, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent him to the people of Mecca to ask their permission to enter Mecca, but they refused. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) stood and said: 'Indeed, Uthman is in the service of Allah and His Messenger,' and he pledged allegiance for him." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) clapped one hand with the other. "As for the Day of Badr, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) stood and said: 'Uthman has gone on the service of Allah and His Messenger,' and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) struck for him with his share and did not strike for anyone else who was absent, except for him." He then recited to him: {Indeed, those who fell into error among you on the day the two groups met were caused to stumble by Satan because of some of what they had earned, and Allah had certainly pardoned them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing} (Surah Al-Imran 3:155). Then he said: "Now go and strive with all your might."

- .... Ibn Umar said: "Uthman committed a great sin on the day the two groups met at Uhud, but Allah forgave him," and he sinned among you a minor sin, and you killed him. He was also asked about Ali and Uthman, to which Ibn Umar replied to the questioner: "May Allah curse you! You are asking me about two men, both of whom are better than me, seeking to diminish one of them and elevate the other."

- And Abu Ishaq ibn al-Durji narrated to us, saying: Abu Ja'far al-Saydilani narrated to us within a group, who said: Fatimah bint Abdullah narrated to us, saying: Abu Bakr ibn Raydah narrated to us, and Abu al-Qasim al-Tabarani narrated to us, saying: Ahmad ibn Ishaq al-Khashab al-Ruqii narrated to us, saying: Abdullah ibn Ja'far narrated to us, saying: Ubaydullah ibn 'Amr narrated to us, from Zayd ibn Abi Unaysah, from Abu Ishaq, from al-'Alaa ibn 'Arar, who said: Ibn Umar was asked about Ali and Uthman, and he replied: "As for Ali, do not ask me about him; look at his place from the Prophet's (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) home, for he blocked the doors to our homes in the mosque and kept his door open." And as for Uthman, he committed a great sin on the day the two groups met, but Allah forgave him. He committed a sin among you less than that, and you killed him." This was narrated from the hadiths of Shu'bah, Zuhair, and Isra'il, from Abu Ishaq.
