- .... Dr. Marsden Jones says in the introduction to his edition of al-Waqidi's book on the military expeditions (al-Maghazi): "In the manuscript we have taken as the basis for this publication, there is a list of those who fled from the Prophet on the day of Uhud, beginning with these words:
And among those who turned back was so-and-so and al-Harith ibn Hateb, Thalabah ibn Hateb, Suwad ibn Ghuzayyah, Sa'd ibn Uthman, Uqbah ibn Uthman, and Khawjah ibn 'Amir, reaching the clans of Makhzum and Aws ibn Qaythi in a group from Banu Harithah." Meanwhile, the text in Ibn Abi al-Hadid has Umar
and Uthman in place of so-and-so, and al-Baladhuri narrates from al-Waqidi that Uthman is mentioned, without any mention of Umar. It is clear that the text in the original manuscript
likely mentioned Uthman and Umar, or Umar alone, or Uthman alone, among those who turned their backs on the day of Uhud, but the scribe did not accept this regarding Umar or Uthman and replaced their names or the name of one of them with the term: so-and-so.
