23792 - Yazid narrated to us, saying: Al-Walid, meaning ibn Abdullah ibn Jumayr, narrated to us, from Abi Tufail, who said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) returned from the expedition of Tabuk, he ordered a herald to announce that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was taking al-Aqabah, and that no one should take it. While the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was being guided by Huzaifah and led by Ammar, a group of men veiled and riding mounts approached Ammar as he was leading the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). Ammar began to strike the faces of the mounts. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said to Huzaifah, "Enough, enough," until the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) descended. When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) descended, he got down and Ammar returned. Ammar said: "O Ammar, do you recognize the people?" He replied: "I recognized most of the mounts, and the people are veiled." He asked: "Do you know what they wanted?" Ammar said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He continued: "They wanted to intimidate the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and throw him down." So Ammar asked a man from the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), saying: "I ask you by Allah, how many do you know were the companions of al-Aqabah?" He replied: "Fourteen." Ammar said: "If you were among them, they were fifteen," and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) counted three from them. They said: "By Allah, we did not hear the herald of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), nor did we know what the people intended." Ammar declared: "Ammar bears witness that the twelve remaining ones are at war with Allah and His Messenger in this worldly life and on the Day when the witnesses rise." Al-Walid added, and Abi Tufail mentioned that during that expedition, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said to the people, as it was mentioned to him that there was a scarcity of water, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) ordered a herald to announce that no one should collect water before the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) collected it and found a group of men who had collected water before him, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) cursed them that day.

425 - From Abu al-Tufayl, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) went out to the Battle of Tabuk and arrived at a slope. He commanded his caller to announce, "Let no one take the slope, for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) is coming to take it." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was walking, and Hudhayfa was leading him, while Ammar ibn Yasir was driving him. Then a group of men masked and on mounts approached until they surrounded the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). Ammar went back and struck the faces of the mounts, and the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said to Hudhayfa, "Enough, enough," so Ammar followed him and said, "Halt, halt, until they kneel." Then he said to Ammar, "Do you know the men?" Ammar replied, "No, they were masked, but I recognized most of the mounts." The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) asked, "Do you know what they intended with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)?" I said, "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said, "They intended to frighten the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and throw him down from the slope." Later, something arose between Ammar and a man among them, not unusual among people, and he said, "I beseech you by Allah, how many were the companions at the slope who intended to plot against the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)?" The man replied, "We believe they were fourteen." Ammar said, "If you were among them, then they were fifteen." Ammar will testify that twelve are parties for Allah and His Messenger in this worldly life and on the Day when the witnesses arise. It was narrated by al-Tabarani in the major work, and its narrators are trustworthy.

426 - Al-Tabarani said: Ali ibn Abd al-Aziz narrated to us, saying: Al-Zubayr ibn Bakkar narrated to us, who said: The names of the Companions of Aqabah Mu'tab ibn Qusayr ibn Malil from Banu Amr ibn Awf, who witnessed the Battle of Badr, was among those who said: "Muhammad is promising us treasures of Khosrow and Caesar, while one of us does not feel safe from his solitude." He was also the one who said, "If we had any power in this matter, we would not be killed here." Al-Zubayr said he witnessed Wadi'ah ibn Thabit ibn Amr ibn Awf making this statement, and he was the one who said: "We were merely engaging in frivolous talk and play." He also said: "What is this I see? These Qur'an reciters are filling their stomachs and showing cowardice in the face of battle." Wajd ibn Abdullah ibn Nabatil ibn al-Harith from Banu Amr ibn Awf was the one who said, and Gabriel (peace be upon him) said: "O Muhammad, who is this black man with abundant hair, his eyes like two bowls of yellow, looking with the eyes of a devil, and his liver like that of a donkey? He informs the hypocrites about you," and "he is the one informing them about you." al-Harith ibn Yazid al-Ta'i, a client of Banu Amr ibn Awf, was the one who rushed to the pool, meaning the well, which the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) forbade anyone from getting to before him, and he drew water from it. Aws ibn Qabti was from Banu Harithah, and he was the one who said, "Our homes are exposed," and he was the grandfather of Yahya ibn Sa'id ibn Qays. al-Jal-las ibn Suwayd ibn al-Samit was from Banu Amr ibn Awf, and it was conveyed to us that he repented after that. Sa'ad ibn Zurarah from Banu Malik ibn al-Najjar was the one who was reserved by the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and he was the youngest among them and the most malevolent. Suwayd and Ra'ish were from Balhabla, and they were among those who equipped Ibn Abi in the Expedition of Tabuk to undermine the people. Qays ibn Amr ibn Fahd, Zayd ibn al-Lusayb was from the Jews of Banu Qaynuqa, who conformed to Islam but harbored the deceit of the Jews and the hypocrisy of those who acted hypocritically. Sulala ibn al-Hamam was from Banu Qaynuqa and also appeared to embrace Islam. Al-Tabarani narrated this in al-Kabir from the statement of Al-Zubayr ibn Bakkar, as you can see.

- And this hadith was narrated by Imam Ahmad in his Musnad, who said: Yazid - that is, ibn Harun - narrated to us, from al-Walid ibn Abdullah ibn Jumay, from Abu al-Tufayl, who said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was returning from the Expedition of Tabuk, he ordered a caller to announce that the Messenger of Allah was taking hold of the cliff, and no one should take hold of it. While the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was being led by Hudhayfah and guided by Ammar, a group of hooded men on mounts approached and surrounded Ammar as he was guiding the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). Ammar began to strike the faces of the mounts. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said to Hudhayfah: "Enough, enough," until the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) descended from the valley. When he descended and Ammar returned, he said: "O Ammar, did you recognize the people?" Ammar replied: "I recognized most of the mounts, and the people are hooded." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) asked: "Do you know what they wanted?" Ammar answered: "Allah and His Messenger know best." The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "They wanted to drive the Messenger of Allah away and throw him down." Ammar then walked over to a man from the companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said: "I urge you by Allah, how many did you know were the People of the Cliff?" The man replied: "Fourteen men." Ammar said: "If you were one of them, they were fifteen." The man said: "Three of the Messenger of Allah's (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) companions excused themselves from him, saying: 'We did not hear the caller of the Messenger of Allah, nor did we know what the people intended.'" Ammar said: "I bear witness that the remaining twelve are at war with Allah and His Messenger in this worldly life and on the Day when the witnesses rise."

- Ibn Luheiya said, from Abi al-Aswad, from Urwah ibn al-Zubayr: It is said that when the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) returned from Tabuk to Medina, a group of hypocrites conspired to assassinate him and to throw him from the top of an incline (Uqbah) on the road. He was informed of their plot, so he commanded the people to proceed from the valley while he ascended the incline, accompanied by those men who had covered their faces. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) instructed Ammar ibn Yasar and Hudhayfa ibn al-Yaman to walk with him. Ammar held the reins of the she-camel, and Hudhayfa was driving it. While they were walking, they heard that the people had surrounded them, and the Messenger of Allah became angry. Hudhayfa noticed his anger and returned to them, wielding a hooked staff (mahjan), and confronted the faces of their mounts with his staff. When they saw Hudhayfa, they thought he had been made aware of what they were plotting regarding the serious matter. They hurriedly mingled with the people, and Hudhayfa returned, catching up with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). He instructed them to hurry until they crossed the incline and stood waiting for the people. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said to Hudhayfa: "Did you recognize these people?" He replied: "I recognized only their mounts in the darkness of the night when they surrounded them." Then he said: "Did you understand what was the matter with those riders?" They both said: "No," so he informed them of what they had conspired about and named them, asking them to keep it secret. They said: "O Messenger of Allah, will you not command their killing?" He replied: "I dislike that people would say Muhammad kills his companions." Ibn Ishaq mentioned this story, but stated that the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) only informed Hudhayfa ibn al-Yaman of their names. This is the more plausible account, and Allah knows best. Supporting this is the statement of Abu al-Dardaa to Alqamah, a companion of Ibn Mas'ud: "Is there not among you," meaning the people of Kufa, "a bearer of the black garment and pillow," referring to Ibn Mas'ud? "Is there not among you a keeper of the secret whom none knows except him," meaning Hudhayfa? "Is there not among you one whom Allah protected from the devil by the tongue of Muhammad," meaning Ammar?" We also narrate from the Commander of the Faithful, Umar ibn al-Khattab (peace be upon him), that he said to Hudhayfa: "I implore you by Allah, am I one of them?" He replied: "No, nor will I absolve anyone after you," meaning he would not do so to avoid revealing the secret of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). I said, and there were fourteen men, while it was said they were twelve men. Ibn Ishaq mentioned that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) sent Hudhayfa ibn al-Yaman to them, and he gathered them for him. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) informed them of what had occurred regarding them and what they had conspired about, and then Ibn Ishaq listed their names, saying, "And concerning them, Allah, the Exalted, revealed:" {And they intended what they could not achieve} (Surah At-Tawbah 9:74).
- Al-Bayhaqi narrated through the chain of Muhammad ibn Salamah, from Abi Ishaq, from al-A'mash, from Amr ibn Murrah, from Abi al-Bakhtari, from Hudhayfa ibn al-Yaman, who said: "I was holding the reins of the she-camel of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), leading it along, while Ammar was driving it. We were both guiding and driving, until when we were at the incline, twelve riders suddenly confronted him there. I alerted the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and he shouted at them, and they turned to flee. Then the Messenger of Allah said to us: 'Did you recognize the people?' We said: 'No, O Messenger of Allah, they were all masked, but we recognized the mounts.' He said: 'Those are the hypocrites until the Day of Resurrection. Do you know what they intended?' We said: 'No.' He said: 'They intended to corner the Messenger of Allah in the incline and throw him from it.'" We said: "O Messenger of Allah, will you not send word to their tribes so that each group may send you the head of their leader?" He replied: "No, I dislike that the Arabs would speak among themselves that Muhammad is killing his people. Until Allah helps him against them, then he will turn to them and kill them." Then he said: "O Allah, strike them with Dabiyyah." We said: "O Messenger of Allah, what is Dabiyyah?" He said: "It is a flame of fire that will fall upon the vitals of one of them, and he will perish."

Volume: (1) - Page Number: (257)

516 - Al-Duhhak said: They intended to push the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) down. He descended on the Night of Aqabah, and they were a people who had resolved to kill the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). They descended, seeking an opportunity to ambush him until he got into the Aqabah, and some of them advanced while others delayed. This was during the night. They said: If he gets into the Aqabah, we will push him off his mount in the valley. His leader that night was Ammar ibn Yasir, and his driver was Hudhayfah. Hudhayfah heard the sound of camel hooves and turned to see a group of them masked. He said: Away with you, away with you, O enemies of Allah! So they hesitated, and the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) continued until he reached the place he intended. Then Allah, the Exalted, revealed His statement: {And they intended that which they could not attain (Tawbah 9:74)}.

16839 - Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated to us, saying: Ahmad ibn Abd al-Jabbar narrated to us, saying: Yunus ibn Bakir narrated to us from Ibn Ishaq regarding the story of Tabuk and what happened at the pass with the concerns of the hypocrites to stone the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) there, and what was said by them, and Allah, the Exalted, informing His Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) of their secrets. He said: So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) descended from the pass and said to his two companions, meaning Hudhayfah and Ammar: "Do you know what the people intended?" They said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "They wanted to stone me at the pass and throw me down from it." They said: "Should you not order us, O Messenger of Allah, to strike their necks when the people gather to you?" He replied: "I dislike that people will say that Muhammad has placed his hand on his companions, killing them." Then he mentioned the narrations of his calling them and informing them of their inner secrets, and some of them confessing, repenting, and his acceptance of them, which indicated this. Ibn Ishaq said: And (he mentioned) his command to call Husayn ibn Numayr, who said to him: "Woe to you! What drove you to this?" He replied: "What drove me to it was that I thought Allah would not inform you of it." He continued: "But now that Allah has informed you of it and you know it, I bear witness today that you are the Messenger of Allah, and I have never believed in you before this moment with certainty." So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) pardoned him his slip and forgave him with the words he spoke.

17867 - Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Abbas narrated to us, saying: Ahmad ibn Abd al-Jabbar narrated to us, saying: Yunus ibn Bakir narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq, in the story of Tabuk, who said: So when the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) reached the pass, a herald of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) called out, "Take the valley floor, for it is wider for you," and indeed the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had taken the pass, and with him were Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman and Ammar ibn Yasir (may Allah be pleased with them). The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) disliked that anyone should try to overwhelm him in the pass. However, some of the hypocrites heard him and delayed, then a group of hypocrites followed him, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) heard the sound of people behind him. He said to one of his companions, "Strike their faces." When they heard that and saw a man approaching them, who was Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman, they all descended, and the man began to strike their mounts, while they said, "We are merely the companions of Ahmad," and they were wrapped in cloaks, with nothing visible except their eyes. His companion came after the people had descended, and he said, "Did you recognize the group?" He replied, "No, by Allah, O Prophet of Allah, but I recognized their mounts." So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) descended from the pass and said to his companions, "Do you know what the people intended? They wanted to overwhelm me in the pass and throw me down from it." They said, "Should you not command us, O Messenger of Allah, to strike their necks if people gather around you?" He said, "I dislike that people would say that Muhammad has placed his hand on his companions, killing them," and he mentioned the rest of the story.

2800 - Narrated to us by Ubbad ibn Ya'qub, who said: Muhammad ibn Fadl informed us, saying: Al-Walid ibn Jumay' informed us, from Abu al-Tufayl, from Hudhayfah (ra), who said: When the Battle of Tabuk took place, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) commanded a caller to announce that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had taken the Pass of Aqabah, so do not take it. Thus, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) proceeded in the Pass of Aqabah, with Ammar driving the animals and Hudhayfah leading him. And behold, they saw some mounts upon which were people with their faces covered. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "Enough, enough, O Ammar, drive, drive," and Ammar turned to the people and struck the faces of their mounts. When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) descended from the Pass of Aqabah, he said: "O Ammar, do you know the people," or he said, "Do you know most of the people or the mounts? Do you know what the people intended?" I said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said: "They wanted to intimidate the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)." And we do not know of this narration being transmitted in this wording except from Hudhayfah from the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). It has been narrated from Hudhayfah in ways other than this, and this way is the best among them in terms of continuity and soundness of chain, except that Abu al-Tufayl narrated hadiths from the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and Al-Walid ibn Jumay' is known, although he had a tendency towards Shi'ism. However, the scholars accepted his narrations and reported from him.

- Ibn Abi Hatim and Abu Shaykh narrated this through al-Dhahhak and al-Bayhaqi, from Urwah, from Hudhayfah, and from Ibn Ishaq (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding Allah's statement, the Exalted: {And they intended what they could not attain} (Surah al-Tawbah 9:74), that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) returned, heading back from Tabuk to Medina, until he was at a certain point along the way. Some of his companions plotted against the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and conspired to throw him into a ravine in the road. In another wording, it was that they planned to kill him. When they intended this and reached the ravine, they wanted to proceed with him through it. But when the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) enveloped them, he was informed of their plot and said: "Whoever among you wishes may take a route through the valley, for it is broader for you." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) took the ravine, and the people followed the route through the valley, except for the few who had conspired against the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). When they heard this, they prepared themselves, wrapped their faces, and were intent on a great matter. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) commanded Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman and Ammar ibn Yasir to walk with him, and he instructed Ammar to take the reins of the she-camel and Hudhayfah to drive it. While they were walking, they suddenly heard the group behind them had surrounded them. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) became angry and ordered Hudhayfah to drive them away. Hudhayfah saw the anger of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and returned with a staff. He confronted the faces of their mounts, striking them with the staff. The group realized they were masked and did not know, thinking it was the act of a traveler. They were filled with fear of Allah when they saw Hudhayfah and felt that their plot had been revealed to him. They hurried until they mixed with the people. Hudhayfah returned and caught up with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). When he reached him, he said: "Strike the she-camel, O Hudhayfah, and you walk, O Ammar." So they hurried until they were level with him, ascending to the top of the ravine, waiting for the people. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to Hudhayfah: "Do you recognize any of these men or this group or anyone among them?" He replied: "I recognized the she-camel of so-and-so and so-and-so." And he said: "It was the darkness of night, and they were veiled." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) continued: "Did you learn of their affair and what they intended?" They answered: "No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "Indeed, they plotted to travel with me, and when it became dark in the ravine, they intended to throw me from it. And Allah, the Exalted, has informed me of their names and the names of their fathers. They are Abdullah ibn Sa'd ibn Abi Sarh, Abu Hadir the Arab, Abu Amir, al-Jallass ibn Suwayd ibn al-Samit, Majma' ibn Jariyah, Falyah al-Tamimi, Husayn ibn Numayr, Tu'mah ibn Ubayriq, Abdullah ibn Uyaynah, and Murrah ibn al-Rabi'." It was said: "O Messenger of Allah, will you not command that they be killed?" He replied: "I dislike that people would talk and say: 'Muhammad has turned his hand against his companions.'" But when morning came, he sent for all of them and said: "Did you want to do such-and-such?" They swore by Allah that they had neither said nor intended what he had asked them about. And that is the statement of Allah, the Exalted: {They swear by Allah they did not say it, yet they said the word of disbelief and disbelieved after their Islam, and they intended what they could not attain} (Surah al-Tawbah 9:74). They were twelve men who fought against Allah and His Messenger, and Abu Amir was their leader, and his children built the Mosque of Deception (Masjid al-Darar).

He said: The consensus of those who were with him (peace be upon him) from the hypocrites, numbering twelve men, and it is said fourteen or fifteen men, was to confront the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) in the pass between Tabuk and Medina. They said: When he engaged at the pass, we would push him off his mount in the valley. And Allah, the Almighty, informed His Messenger of this. So when the army reached the pass, a herald of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) called out that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) intended to traverse the pass, and none should do so, but rather, they should take the valley floor, as it was easier and more spacious. Thus, the people took the valley floor, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) took the pass. When they heard this, they prepared themselves, veiled their faces, and entered the pass. And he (peace be upon him) commanded Ammar ibn Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) to take hold of the she-camel's reins and lead it, and he commanded Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) to drive from behind him.
- .... In al-Dala'il from Hudhayfah, who said: I was on the night of the pass holding the reins of the she-camel of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and leading it, while Ammar ibn Yasir was driving it, or I was driving it and Ammar was leading it, meaning they were alternating this task. While the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was walking in the pass, he heard the sound of people approaching him, and the she-camel of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) became startled, causing some of his possessions to fall. This angered the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and he ordered Hudhayfah to drive them away. Hudhayfah returned to them, having seen the anger of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and he had with him a stick. He began to strike the faces of their mounts with it, saying: "Get away, get away, O enemies of Allah!" Suddenly, he saw a group of masked men. In another narration, he (peace be upon him) shouted at them, and they turned to flee, realizing that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was aware of their plot against him. They descended from the pass, hurrying to the valley floor, and mixed with the people. Hudhayfah returned, striking the she-camel, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to him: "Did you recognize anyone from the group you drove away?" He replied: "No, the people were masked, and the night was dark."
- .... In a version, Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "No, they plotted to walk with me in the pass to crowd me and throw me down from it. Allah informed me of them and their plot, and I will inform you of them, but you must keep it secret." When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) woke up, Asid ibn Hudhayr came to him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, what prevented you from taking the valley route last night? It was easier than traversing the pass." He replied: "Do you know what the hypocrites intended?" and he mentioned the story to him. Asid said: "O Messenger of Allah, the people have camped and gathered. Order each group to kill the man they were planning this for. If you wish, I can clarify their names to you." Those who sent you with the truth, I will not leave until I bring you their heads." He (peace be upon him) said: "I dislike that people say, 'Muhammad is killing a people,' and when Allah, the Almighty, makes him victorious over them, he turns to them, killing them." Asid replied: "O Messenger of Allah, they are not companions." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) gathered them and informed them of what he said and what they had agreed upon. They swore by Allah that they had not said this nor intended what was mentioned. So Allah, the Almighty, revealed: {They swear by Allah that they did not say it, while they uttered the word of disbelief} (Surah At-Tawbah 9:74), and Allah, the Almighty, revealed: {And they intended what they could not attain} (Surah At-Tawbah 9:74). The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) then prayed against them, saying: "O Allah, strike them with the Dubaylah, a torch of fire that will appear between their shoulders until it blazes from their chests."

- .... It was said to Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), the keeper of the secret of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). Hudhayfah said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) dismounted from his mount, and it was revealed to him while his mount was kneeling. It stood up, dragging its reins. I met it, took hold of its reins, and came close to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). I knelt it down and sat beside it until the Prophet (peace be upon him) stood up and came to it. He said: "Who is this?" I said: "Hudhayfah." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "I am telling you a secret, so do not mention it. I was forbade to pray over so-and-so and so-and-so, and a group of hypocrites." When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) passed away, Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) would, during his caliphate, if a man died who was suspected to be one of those individuals, take Hudhayfah's (may Allah be pleased with him) hand and lead him to pray over him. If Hudhayfah walked with him, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) prayed over him; if he withdrew his hand, he would leave the prayer off.
