Umar asked, "What is the most frightening thing you fear for the Ummah of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)?" Ka'b said, "Misleading leaders." Umar said, "You have spoken the truth; the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) confided this to me and informed me."

I also heard something similar from Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah.

5584 - As for the narration of Muslim ibn Khalid, Abu Aun Muhammad ibn Mahan al-Khazzaz informed us in Mecca, saying: Ali ibn Abd al-Aziz narrated to us, saying: Sa'id ibn Mansur narrated to us, saying: Muslim ibn Khalid narrated to us, from Isma'il ibn Ubayd ibn Rifa'ah, from his father, that Ubadah ibn al-Samit stood up in the middle of the house of the Commander of the Faithful, Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), and said: "I heard the Messenger of God (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), Muhammad, Abu al-Qasim, say: 'After me, there will be men who will take charge of your affairs. They will know what you deny and will deny what you know. Therefore, there is no obedience to one who disobeys God, the Exalted. Do not blame yourselves. By the One in Whose hand is my soul, Muawiyah is one of those.'" Uthman did not reply to him with a word. This hadith has been narrated with a sound chain of transmission, meeting the criteria of the Two Shaykhs, regarding Ubadah ibn al-Samit's visit to Uthman ibn Affan in complaint, with a concise text.

- .... Al-Hakim al-Tirmidhi narrated from Umar ibn al-Khattab who said: "The Messenger of Allah came to me while I could see the sadness on his face. He took hold of my beard and said: 'Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed, to Him we shall return.' Gabriel just came to me and said: 'Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed, to Him we shall return.' I replied, 'Yes, indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed, to Him we shall return. But what is this, Gabriel?' He said: 'Your Ummah will soon be beset by trials after you, lasting a little while, but not much.' I asked, 'A trial of disbelief or a trial of misguidance?' He said, 'Both will happen.' I continued, 'And how will this be when I am leaving behind in them the Book of Allah?' He replied, 'They will be led astray by the Book of Allah, and the first of this will come from their scholars and leaders. The leaders will withhold the people's rights, not giving them what is due, leading to conflict among them, and the scholars will follow the whims of the leaders, supporting them in their wrongness, and they will not hold back.' I said, 'O Gabriel, how will those who are saved fare?' He said, 'They will be with restraint and patience. If they are given what is rightfully theirs, they will accept it; if it is withheld, they will let it be.'"
