Companions fighting with eachother with hands, stick and shoes

Hadith No: 1

Narrated Anas:

It was said to the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) "Would that you see `Abdullah bin Ubai." So, the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) went to him, riding a donkey, and the Muslims accompanied him, walking on salty barren land. When the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) reached `Abdullah bin Ubai, the latter said, "Keep away from me! By Allah, the bad smell of your donkey has harmed me." On that an Ansari man said (to `Abdullah), "By Allah! The smell of the donkey of Allah's Messenger (s.a.w.a.) is better than your smell." On that a man from `Abdullah's tribe got angry for `Abdullah's sake, and the two men abused each other which caused the friends of the two men to get angry, and the two groups started fighting with sticks, shoes and hands. We were informed that the following Divine Verse was revealed (in this concern):-- "And if two groups of Believers fall to fighting then, make peace between them." (49.9)

It has been narrated on the authority of Anas b. Malik that it was said to the Prophet (s.a.w.a.):

Would that you approached Abdullah b. Ubayy (to persuade him to accept Islam). The Prophet (s.a.w.a.) (accordingly) went to him, riding a donkey, and (a party of) Muslims also went (with him). On the way they had to walk over a piece of land affected with salinity. When the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) approached him, he said: Do not come near me. By Allah, the obnoxious smell of your donkey has offended me. (As a rejoinder to this remark), a man from the Ansar said: By God, the smell of the donkey of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) is better than your smell. (At this), a man from the tribe of 'Abdullah got furious. Then people from both sides got furious and exchanged blows with sticks, hands and shoes. (The narrator says) that (after this scuffle) we learnt that (the Qur'anic verse):" It two parties of the Believers have a quarrel, make ye peace between them" (xlix. 9) was revealed about these fighting parties.

12607 - Aram narrated to us, saying: Mu'tamir narrated to us, who said: I heard my father narrating that Anas said: It was said to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), "Would you not go to Abdullah ibn Ubayy?" So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) went and rode a donkey, and the Muslims went walking, and it was a swampy land. When the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) went to him, he said, "Be away from me, for by Allah, the smell of your donkey has troubled me." Then a man from the Ansar said, "By Allah, the donkey of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) has a better smell than you." So a man from Abdullah's people became angry, and each of them had companions who were angry. There was a skirmish between them with branches, hands, and sandals, and we were informed that it was revealed concerning them : {And if two factions of the believers should fight, then make settlement between them} (Surah Al-Hujurat 49:9).

- Muhammad ibn Abd al-Ala narrated to me, who said: Immatar ibn Sulayman narrated to me, from his father from Anas, who said: It was said to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), "Would you go to Abdullah ibn Ubayy?" He said, "Then go to him." So he mounted a donkey and the Muslims went, and it was a barren land. When he came to Abdullah ibn Ubayy, he said, "Away from me! By Allah, your donkey's stench has harmed me." Then a man from the Ansar said, "By Allah, the stench of the donkey of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) is better smelling than you." Then a man from Abdullah ibn Ubayy's people became angry, and his companions became angry for each of them. So there was a scuffle between them with twigs, hands, and sandals, and it was reported to us that the following was revealed about them: {And if two factions of believers should fight, then make settlement between them (Al-Hujurat 49:9)}.

So the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) went to him, riding a donkey, and the Muslims went along with him on foot, and it was a barren land. When the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) approached him, Abd Allah ibn Ubayy said, "Clear off from me! By Allah, your donkey's stench has certainly annoyed me." Then a man from the Ansar among them said, "By Allah, the donkey of the Messenger of Allah has a sweeter scent than you!" This angered a man from Abd Allah's tribe, and they exchanged insults. Men from each of their groups became angry, and there was a skirmish between them, resulting in blows with palm fronds, hands, and sandals. We were informed that it was revealed: {And if two factions of believers should fight, then make settlement between them} (Al-Hujurat 49:9). It is narrated that when this was revealed, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) recited it, and they reconciled, with some of them refraining from further conflict.

His statement, Exalted be He: {And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between them} (al-Hujurat 49:9) has two reasons for its revelation:

1317 - One is what Al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated in their Sahihs from the hadith of Anas ibn Malik, who said: It was said to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), "Would you not go to Abdullah ibn Ubayy?" So he mounted a donkey, and the Muslims went with him on foot. When the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) approached him, he said, "Be gone from me, for by Allah, your donkey's stench has harmed me." A man from the Ansar said, "By Allah, the donkey of the Messenger of Allah has a better scent than you!" This angered a man from Abdullah's tribe, and both of them became angry, and it led to their companions getting involved. There was some hitting with palm fronds, hands, and sandals between them, and it was conveyed to us that the following was revealed about them: {And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between them} (al-Hujurat 49:9).

1319 - Maqatil said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) stood before the Ansar while on his donkey, and the donkey urinated. Abdullah ibn Ubayy said, "Ugh!" and held his nose. Abdullah ibn Rawahah said, "By Allah, it has a better scent than you!" Then there was some fighting between the people of ibn Ubayy and ibn Rawahah with hands and sandals.

1320 - The second opinion is that it was revealed concerning two men from the Ansar who were in a dispute over a right between them. One of them said, "I will take my right by force," due to his larger tribe. The other invited him to take the matter to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). The situation escalated until they began to physically confront each other with hands and sandals. This was stated by Qatadah. Mujahid said that the two factions referred to are the Aws and the Khazraj, who fought with sticks among themselves.
