Anjashah

Hadith No: 1

Narrated Anas bin Malik:

The Prophet (s.a.w.a.) came to some of his wives among whom there was Um Sulaim, and said, "May Allah be merciful to you, O Anjasha! Drive the camels slowly, as they are carrying glass vessels!" Abu Qalaba said, "The Prophet (s.a.w.a.) said a sentence (i.e. the above metaphor) which, had anyone of you said it, you would have admonished him for it".

Hadith No: 2

Narrated Anas bin Malik:

Allah's Messenger (s.a.w.a.) was on a journey and he had a black slave called Anjasha, and he was driving the camels (very fast, and there were women riding on those camels). Allah's Messenger (s.a.w.a.) said, "Waihaka (Woe onto you), O Anjasha! Drive slowly (the camels) with the glass vessels (women)!"

Hadith No: 3

Anas reported that Allah's Messenger (s.a.w.a.) had in one of his journeys his black slave who was called Anjasha along with him.  Thereupon Allah's Messenger (s.a.w.a.) said:

Anjasha, drive slowly as you are driving glass vessels

- His statement: (So the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) expelled so-and-so and Umar expelled so-and-so): .... Al-Tabarani and Tamam al-Razi narrated in their benefactions from the hadith of Wa'ilah, similar to the hadith of Ibn Abbas in its entirety. And it stated: "And the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) expelled Anjashah, and Umar expelled so-and-so, and Anjashah is the black servant who used to lead the women in song, and his story will come in that context in the Book of Adab. Mention has already been made of the names of those who were eunuchs during the prophetic era.

- His statement: (He said, "Woe to you, Anjasha"): In the narration of Hamad, it is mentioned that he was on a journey and there was a boy driving them along, known as Anjasha. This will be mentioned later in (the Chapter on Implicit Expressions). In a narration of Muslim from this angle, it states that he was in one of his journeys with a Black boy. And in a narration by al-Nasa'i from Qutaybah from Hamad, it is stated (and a boy of his, named Anjasha), with the hamzah pronounced as an open vowel, the noon unstressed, the jim opened, followed by a doted shin, and then a feminine ha. And it appears in a narration of Wihb, "O Anjash," indicating an affectionate truncation. Al-Baladhuri said: Anjasha was Habeshi and was kunya'd Abu Mariyah. Al-Tabarani narrated from the hadith of Wathilah that he was one of those whom the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) expelled from among the effeminate.

261 - Anjashah the Black, the Caller, had a good voice in reciting poetry and songs. Al-Bladhuri said he was Ethiopian and used to be called Abu Mariyah.
- Ibn Mundhir said: He is well-known through Suleiman and from the narration of Abu Qilabah from Anas: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was on one of his travels, and there was a young black man named Anjashah reciting poetry and songs."
- It was mentioned in the narration of Wathilah ibn al-Asqa': that Anjashah was one of the effeminate individuals during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny).
- Al-Tabarani narrated with a weak chain from the direction of Unbasah ibn Sa'id, from Hammad, the client of Banu Umayyah, from Janah from Wathilah ibn al-Asqa' who said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) cursed the effeminate and said, 'Drive them out of your homes,' and the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) expelled Anjashah," and Umar expelled so-and-so.

- Anjasha: the black slave, who had a good voice in singing camel-driving songs, and he led the wives of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) during the Farewell Pilgrimage. The camels hurried along, and the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "O Anjasha, gently now, be kind to the fragile ones."
84 - Abu al-Fadl Abdullah ibn Ahmad al-Tusi narrated to us, saying: Abu Muhammad Ja'far ibn Ahmad ibn al-Husayn al-Siraj narrated to us, saying: Ubaydullah ibn Umar ibn Ahmad al-Maru al-Rawzi narrated to us, saying: Abdullah ibn Masi narrated to us, saying: Ibrahim ibn Abdullah al-Basri narrated to us, saying: the Ansari narrated to us, from Hamid, from Anas, who said: A man named Anjasha was driving them with the Mothers of the Believers, and as the pace quickened, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "O Anjasha, be gentle with the fragile ones."

85 - And Abu al-Fadl Abdullah ibn Ahmad narrated to us, with his chain of transmission to Dawud al-Tayalisi, from Hammad ibn Salamah, from Thabit, from Anas, who said: Anjasha was leading the women, while al-Bara' ibn Malik was leading the men. Anjasha had a beautiful voice, and when he sang, the camels would stretch out their necks. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "O Anjasha, take it easy, drive gently with the fragile ones." The three of them narrated this.

- Anjasha the Companion: with the hamza, noon, jim, and emphasized sheen was driving or leading the wives of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) during the Year of the Farewell Pilgrimage. He would sing as he guided, and he was good at it. The camels would move more energetically with his singing. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) then said to him: "Gently, O Anjasha, be kind to the fragile ones," meaning the women. His narration is from Anas ibn Malik, and Anjasha was black, guiding the women, while Al-Bara ibn Malik was guiding the men.

- And in a narration by Qatadah from Anas: The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had a caller named Anjasha, who had a beautiful voice.
- And in a narration by Wahb: Anjasha was the Prophet's (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) servant, driving them.
- Al-Baladhuri said: Anjasha was an Abyssinian who was nicknamed Abu Mariyah.
- And in al-Tahdhib: Anjasha was a black servant of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), mentioned among the companions.
- I said: Abu Umar mentioned him in al-Isti'ab: Anjasha, the black servant, was driving or leading the women of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) during the Year of the Farewell Pilgrimage.
- And al-Tabarani narrated from the hadith of Wathila: that he was one of those whom the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) expelled from the effeminate.
