- And Ṭuwīs: The name of a man who was exemplified as a model of ill omen. He said: And I see it to be a diminutive of Ṭāwūs, made with an affectionate tone. And their saying: More ill-omened than Ṭuwīs refers to a eunuch who was in Medina. He said: O people of Medina, expect the emergence of the Dajjal as long as I am among you. But when I die, you will be safe, for I was born on the night he died, and weaned on the day Abū Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) died, reached puberty on the day ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) was killed, married on the day ʿUthmān (may Allah be pleased with him) was killed, and had a child on the day ʾAlī (may Allah be pleased with him) was killed. His name was Ṭāwūs, but when he became effeminate, it was changed to Ṭuwīs. He called himself ʿAbd al-Naʿīm and said to himself: I am ʿAbd al-Naʿīm; I am Ṭāwūs al-Jahīm ....

- Abu al-Hasan al-Mada'ini narrated from Salih ibn Hassan, who said: "We performed Hajj during the time of al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik, and there were several effeminate men (makhannathin) throwing pebbles, including Tawis and al-Dallal. And Tawis was throwing pebbles with a Sufi-like demeanor, his clothes stained with saffron." It was said to him: "What did you intend by this, O Abu Abd al-Mani'm?" He replied: "A hand that belonged to Iblis was upon me, and I wanted to repay him for it." We said: "And what was his hand upon you?" He said: "This desire was made beloved to me, and nothing would please me more than to have Marwan ibn al-Hakam's spear or the shelter of Amr ibn al-As in Ta'if." And I asked Iblis about this desire, saying: "Does it have a limit?" He replied: "Yes, if you know that a man will not abandon anything for the sake of Allah that I forbid him except he will pursue it, and he will not leave anything I command him to do except he will do it, I will seek him out and grant him this pleasure." I said: "My need is that you do not take it away from me, Salih, what you have given me." He replied: "Enough, O Abu Abd al-Mani'm, and you are to me in a state of consideration." Then some of his friends entered upon him and found that he had written on the wall of his house: "Adam loved a thousand Hawas." They asked him: "Why have you written this?" He replied: "So that Iblis does not enter upon us." He said: "O fool, Iblis entered upon Adam and Hawwa in Paradise and expelled them. How could he not enter upon us?"
