Book of Knowledge of the Companions (ra) - Umm Ayman drinking the Prophet's (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) urine and its effect
Volume: (4) - Page Number: (63)
6996 - Ahmad ibn Kamil al-Qadi narrated to us, saying: Abdullah ibn Ruh al-Madaini narrated to us, saying: Shababa narrated to us, saying: Abu Malik al-Nakhai narrated to us, from al-Aswad ibn Qays, from Nabih al-Anazi, from Umm Ayman (ra), who said: "The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) stood up at night by a small clay pot beside the house and urinated in it. I woke up at night, thirsty, and drank what was in the pot, not realizing it."
When the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) became awake in the morning, he said: "O Umm Ayman, go to that pot and pour out what is in it." I said: "By Allah, I have already drunk what was in it."
He laughed (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) until his teeth showed, then said: "It is as if your stomach will never be upset by it again."

- .... And something similar has been narrated from him regarding a woman who drank his urine, and he said to her: "You will never complain of a bellyache," and he did not command any of them to rinse their mouths, nor did he forbid them from returning (to drink). The story of this woman who drank his urine is authentic, and al-Darqatni held that Muslim and al-Bukhari were obligated to include it in their collections of authentic hadith. The name of this woman was Barakah, and there is some اختلاف (difference of opinion) regarding her lineage. It was said that she was Umm Ayman and that she used to serve the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). She said, "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had a cup made of sticks that was placed under his bed, and he would urinate in it at night. He urinated in it one night, then miss it and find nothing in it." When he asked Barakah about it, she said, "I got up while I was thirsty and drank it."

- Ibn al-Athir said in al-Ghabah: And Hujaj ibn Muhammad narrated from Ibn Jurayj from Hakimah bint Umaymah, from her mother Umaymah bint Raqiqah, who said: The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had a cup made of twigs in which he would urinate, and he would place it under the bed. Then, a woman named Barakah came and drank it. He sought it but could not find it, so it was said, "Barakah drank it." He replied: "You have protected yourself from the Fire with a protection." Al-Hafiz Abu al-Hasan ibn al-Athir said: And it is said that the one who drank his urine (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was actually Barakah the Ethiopian, who arrived with Umm Habibah from Abyssinia, and they were distinguished between." Allah knows best.

- Al-Hafiz Abi Ya'la said: Mohammed ibn Abi Bakr al-Muqadimi narrated to us, saying: Salim ibn Qutayba narrated to us, from al-Husayn ibn Harith, from Ya'li ibn Ata, from al-Walid ibn Abd al-Rahman from Umm Ayman, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) had a small jar in which he would urinate, and when he woke up in the morning, he would say: "O Umm Ayman, pour out what is in the jar." One night, I got up while I was thirsty and drank what was in it. Then the Messenger of Allah said: "O Umm Ayman, pour out what is in the jar." She replied: "O Messenger of Allah, I got up while I was thirsty and drank what was in it." He said: "You will never complain of a stomach ache after this day, ever again."
- Ibn al-Athir said in Al-Ghabah: Hajjaj ibn Muhammad narrated from Ibn Jurayj from Hakima bint Umayma, from her mother Umayma bint Raqiqah, who said: The Prophet (peace be upon him) had a cup made of twigs in which he would urinate, which he would place under the bed. Then a woman named Barakah came and drank it. He looked for it but could not find it, so it was said: Barakah drank it. He said: "You have shielded yourself from the Fire with a protective shield."
- Al-Hafiz Abu al-Hasan ibn al-Athir said: It is said that the one who drank his (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) urine was actually Barakah the Ethiopian, who came with Umm Habiba from Abyssinia, and they were distinguished from each other. Allah knows best. I say that as for Barirah, she was from the family of Abu Ahmad ibn Jahsh, and they sought to free her, so Aisha bought her from them and freed her. Her allegiance to her remained, as mentioned in the reports in the two Sahihs, but Ibn Asakir did not mention her.

10922 - Barakah the Habeshiyyah was with Umm Habibah, the daughter of Abu Sufyan, serving her there. Then she came to Medina with her, and she is the one who drank the urine of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), as mentioned in the narration of Umaymah bint Ruqayyah. Abu Umar confused her with Umm Ayman and presented in her biography a report from Ibn Jurayj.
- Hakimah bint Umaymah narrated to me from her mother, Umaymah bint Ruqayyah, that the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) used to urinate in a cup made of twigs that would be placed under his bed. One night he came and found the cup empty. He said to a woman named Barakah, who was serving Umm Habibah and had come with her from the land of Abyssinia, "What happened to the urine that was in this cup?" She replied, "I drank it, O Messenger of Allah."
- Abd al-Razzaq said in his Musannaf from Ibn Jurayj: I have been informed that the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) used to urinate in a cup made of twigs placed under his bed. He came and wanted it, but found the cup empty. He said, "There was a woman named Barakah who was a servant of Umm Habibah and had come with her from the land of Abyssinia. Where is the urine?" Abu Umar said: I believe this Barakah is Umm Ayman. End.

- .... And it was not reported that he (peace be upon him) commanded the one who had sucked his blood to wash his mouth, nor that he washed his mouth of it, just as it was not reported that he commanded his caregiver, Umm Ayman, Barakah the Abyssinian (may Allah be pleased with her), to wash her mouth, nor did she wash it after she drank his (peace be upon him) urine. Umm Ayman (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) stood up during the night by a pitcher, that is, under his bed, and urinated in it. I got up, being thirsty, and drank what was in the pitcher without realizing it. When the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his holy progeny) became morning, he said: 'O Umm Ayman, go to that pitcher and pour out whatever is in it.' She said: 'By Allah, I have drunk what is in it.'" Then he (peace be upon him) laughed until his teeth showed and said: "Your belly will never be distended with a giym and fa' after this," and in another wording, "Your belly will not enter the Fire," and in another, "You will not complain of your belly," and it is possible that he (peace be upon him) said all three of these phrases, each having been narrated according to what was heard. Thus, these three matters could occur for Umm Ayman (may Allah be pleased with her).
- .... And in a narration, instead of a pitcher, it was a container of long, open twigs from the date palm. If this is authentic, it could be understood as a matter of multiple containers for Umm Ayman (may Allah be pleased with her), and there is no objection to this. Also, a woman named Barakah bint Tha'laba bint 'Amr drank his (peace be upon him) urine. She was serving Umm Habiba (may Allah be pleased with her), who had come with her from Abyssinia, and hence she was called Barakah the Abyssinian.

- (and Wudi) with the silent letter: a thick, turbid white fluid that emerges after urination or when lifting something heavy, based on the previous case and by consensus. And these discharges from the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) are pure, as al-Baghawi and others firmly asserted. Al-Qadi affirmed this and others validated it. My two teachers ruled it permissible, contrary to what is stated in the Small Commentary and the Investigation regarding their impurity, because the she- camel of the Abyssinian drank his (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) urine and he said, "Your stomach will not enter the Fire," a ruling validated by al-Daraqutni.
- Benefit: These discharges from the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) are pure, as al-Baghawi and others firmly asserted, and al-Qadi and others validated, which is the relied-upon view, contrary to what is mentioned in the Small Commentary and the Investigation that they are not impure. This is because the she-camel of the Abyssinian drank his (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) urine, and he said, "Your stomach will not enter the Fire," a ruling validated by al-Daraqutni.
