Al-Hakim al-Nisayburi - Al-Mustadrak ala al-Sahihayn
Book of Funerals - Permission to Visit Graves

1425 - Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Harun al-Faqih narrated to us, saying: Ali ibn Abd al-Aziz narrated to us, saying: Abu Hudhayfah narrated to us, saying: Sufyan narrated from Abdullah ibn Uthman ibn Khuthaym, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Bahman, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Hassan ibn Thabit, from his father, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) cursed those who frequently visit graves, and these ahadith reported regarding the prohibition of visiting graves are abrogated, and the one that abrogates them is the hadith of Alqamah ibn Martd from Sulayman ibn Buraydah, from his father, from the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny): "I had previously forbidden you to visit graves, but now you may visit them, for Allah, the Exalted, has granted His permission to His Prophet to visit the grave of His mother." This hadith is recorded in the two authoritative books of the Sheikhain (may Allah be pleased with them).

1426 - Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated to us, saying: Al-Rabi ibn Suleiman narrated to us, and Abu al-Abbas narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Abd al-Hakam informed me, saying: Abdullah ibn Wahb informed me, and Osama ibn Zayd told me that Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Habban al-Ansari informed him that Wasi ibn Habban narrated to him that Abu Sa'id al-Khudri told him that the Messenger (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "I had forbidden you from visiting graves, so visit them, for they contain lessons." He also said, "And I had forbidden you from [fermented] drinks, but now you may prepare them, and I do not permit anything intoxicating." He further stated, "I had forbidden you the meat of sacrificial animals, but eat and store [it]." This is a sound hadith according to the criteria of Muslim, although neither he nor al-Bukhari recorded it.

1429 - Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Abdullah al-Saffar narrated to us, saying: Abu Bakr ibn Abi Dunayya narrated to us, saying: Ahmad ibn Imran al-Akhansi narrated to us, saying: Yahya ibn Yamman narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Alqamah ibn Marthad from Sulayman ibn Buraydah, from his father, who said: The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) visited his mother's grave in a thousand-hooded cloak, and he did not see anyone weeping more than on that day. This is a sound hadith according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs, and they did not narrate it.

1430 - Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Ya'qub al-Hafiz and Abu al-Fadl al-Hasan ibn Ya'qub al-Adl said: Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab al-Farra narrated to us, informing us that Ya'li ibn Ubayd narrated to him, and Abu Munin Yazid ibn Kisaan narrated to him from Abu Hazim from Abu Huraira, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) visited his mother's grave and wept, causing those around him to weep as well. He then said: "I asked my Lord for permission to visit her grave, and He granted me permission. I asked for permission to pray for her, but I was not granted permission." "So visit the graves, for they remind you of death." And this hadith is sahih (authentic) according to the criterion of Muslim, although they did not include it in their collections.

1431 - Abu Sa'id Ahmad ibn Yaqub al-Thaqafi narrated to us, saying: Abu Shu'ayb Abdullah ibn al-Hasan al-Harani narrated to us, saying: Abdullah ibn Muhammad al-Nafir narrated to us, saying: Zuhair narrated to us, from Zubaid, from Muharib ibn Dhitar, from Ibn Buraydah, from his father, who said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) near a thousand riders, when he paused and offered two rak'ahs of prayer with us. He then turned to us, his face directed towards us and his eyes shedding tears. Umar stood up to him and, seeking to protect him with his mother and father, said: "What is wrong with you, O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)?" He replied: "I asked my Lord for permission to pray for forgiveness for my mother, but He did not grant me permission, and my eyes brimmed with tears out of compassion for her. I also sought my Lord's permission to visit her grave, and He granted me permission and I had originally forbidden you from visiting graves, so visit them, and your visits will only increase you in goodness." This is a sound hadith according to the criteria of the twoshaykhs, and they did not include it in their collections.

1432 - Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ishaq al-Faqih narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Muthanna Mu'adh ibn al-Muthanna informed us, saying: Muhammad ibn al-Munhal al-Darir narrated to us, saying: Yazid ibn Zuri' narrated to us, saying: Bustum ibn Muslim narrated to us, from Abu al-Tayyah Yazid ibn Hamid from Abdullah ibn Abi Mulaykah, that Aisha was coming back one day from the graves, and I said to her: O Mother of the Believers, where are you coming from? She said: From the grave of my brother Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr. I said to her: Was it not the case that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) forbade visiting graves? She said: Yes, he forbade it, then he commanded visiting them.

1434 - Ahmad ibn Uthman ibn Yahya al-Muqri in Baghdad narrated to us, saying: Sa'id ibn Uthman al-Ahwazi narrated to us, saying: al-Rabi ibn Yahya narrated to us, saying: Abdul Aziz ibn Muslim narrated to us, and Yahya ibn Abdullah al-Taymi also narrated to me from Amr ibn Amir al-Ansari from Anas ibn Malik, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "I had forbidden you from visiting graves, but whoever wishes to visit a grave may do so, for it softens the heart, brings tears to the eyes, and reminds one of the Hereafter."

1435 - Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated to us, saying: Al-Abbas ibn Muhammad al-Duri narrated to us, saying: Musa ibn Dawud al-Dhobi narrated to us, saying: Ya'qub ibn Ibrahim narrated to us from Yahya ibn Sa'id from Abu Muslim al-Khawlani from Ubayd ibn Umayr from Abu Dharr, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said to me: "Visit the graves, for they remind you of the Hereafter," and wash the dead, for it is a way to tend to the body and a profound admonition. Offer prayers over the funerals, for this might sadden you, and the sad one in the shadow of Allah is open to every good. This is a hadith, and its narrators, from beginning to end, are trustworthy.

1436- Abu Hamid Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Hamed al-Adl al-Tabarani narrated to us, saying: Tamim ibn Muhammad narrated to us, saying: Abu Mus'ab al-Zuhri narrated to me, saying: Muhammad ibn Isma'il ibn Abi Fudayk narrated to me, Suleiman ibn Dawud narrated to me, from Ja'far ibn Muhammad, from his father from Ali ibn al-Husayn, from his father, that Fatimah, daughter of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), used to visit the grave of her uncle Hamzah every Friday, praying and weeping at it. This hadith's narrators, from beginning to end, are trustworthy, and I have thoroughly elaborated on the encouragement to visit graves, aiming for participation in the exhortation, so that the miser may understand with regret that it is a Sunnah established in practice. And may Allah send blessings upon Muhammad and his family, all of them.

4375 - Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Abd Allah al-Saffar narrated to us, saying: Abu Bakr ibn Abi Dunyan al-Qurashi narrated to me, saying: Ali ibn Shu'ayb narrated to us, saying: Ibn Abi Fadik narrated to me, from Suleiman ibn Dawud, from his father, from Ja'far ibn Muhammad from his father that his father Ali ibn al-Husayn told him, from his father, that Fatimah, daughter of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), used to visit the grave of her uncle Hamzah ibn Abd al-Mutalib on certain days and pray and weep beside him. This is a narration with a sound chain of transmission, and they did not include it in their collections.

8618 - Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated to us, saying: Al-Abbas ibn Muhammad ibn Hatim al-Duri narrated to us, saying: Abu Amir Abd al-Malik ibn Umar al-Aqdi narrated to us, saying: Kathir ibn Zayd narrated from Dawud ibn Abi Salih, who said: Marwan approached one day and found a man resting his face on the grave. He grabbed him by the neck and said: "Do you know what you are doing?" The man replied: "Yes," and when Marwan turned to him, he saw it was Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him). He then said: "I came to see the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and did not come to the stone." I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) say: "Do not weep for the religion when its people take charge of it, but weep for it when others rule over it." This is a hadith with a sound chain of narrators, and neither of them recorded it.
