1522 - Narrated from Abu Huraira who said: The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) visited his mother's grave and wept, causing those around him to weep as well. He said: "I asked my Lord for permission to ask forgiveness for her, but permission was not granted to me. I then asked Him for permission to visit her grave, and He granted me permission. So, visit graves, for they remind you of death." Narrated by the group (i.e., the scholars).

So visit graves, for they remind you of death."

11808 - Muhammad ibn Abdullah al-Asadi narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Alqamah ibn Marthad, from Sulayman ibn Buraydah, from his father, who said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) opened Mecca, he came to the sanctuary of a grave and sat beside it, assuming the posture of one in conversation. People sat around him. He stood up, weeping, and Umar met him, being one of the most audacious of people towards him. He said: "May I be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of Allah! What is it that makes you weep?" He replied: "This is my mother's grave. I asked my Lord for permission to visit her, and He granted it to me. I asked Him for forgiveness, but He did not grant it." He mentioned her, and my soul overflowed, and I wept." Umar said: He did not see a day when there were more people weeping than on that day.

652 - Abdullah ibn Muhammad al-Baghawi narrated to us, saying: My grandfather and Abu Khaythamah and Uthman ibn Abi Shaybah and Harun ibn Abdullah and Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Sa'id al-Qattan narrated to us, and al-Husayn ibn Ahmad ibn Bustam al-Ayla narrated to me, saying: Sa'id ibn Nuh narrated to us, and Abdullah ibn Sulayman ibn Isa al-Warraq narrated to me, saying: Ahmad ibn Mansur narrated to us. They all said: Qabisa ibn Uqbah narrated to us, saying: Sufyan narrated to us, from Alqamah ibn Marthad, from Sulayman ibn Buraydah, from his father, who said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) opened Mecca, he came to the site of a grave and sat down by it. People gathered around him, and he appeared to be in a state of addressing them. Then he stood up, weeping, and Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) met him, who was one of the boldest people towards him. He said: O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be a sacrifice for you! What has made you weep? He said: This is my mother's grave. I asked my Lord, the Almighty, for permission to visit her, and He granted it to me. I asked Him for forgiveness, and He did not grant me permission. I mentioned her, and I felt sad and cried, but I did not see a day that had more weeping than that day. The wording is from Abdullah ibn Muhammad.

65 - Abu Dawood said: Abu Dawood narrated to us, saying: Suwar ibn Maymoon, Abu al-Jarrah al-Abdi, narrated to me, saying: A man from the family of Umar narrated from Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) say: 'Whoever visits my grave,' or he said, 'whoever visits me, I will be for him an intercessor or a witness.'" And whoever dies in one of the two sanctuaries, Allah will raise him on the Day of Resurrection among the safe.

- My father told me, he said: Abd al-Malik ibn Amr told me, he said: Kathir ibn Zayd narrated to me from Dawud ibn Abi Salih, who said: Marwan approached one day and found a man with his face pressed against the grave. Marwan said: "Do you know what you are doing?" He turned to him, and it was Abu Ayub. Marwan continued, "Yes, I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and did not come to the stone." Abu Ayub replied: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) say: 'Do not weep for the faith when its people take charge of it, but weep for it when it is overseen by others who are not its people.'"

- Abu Ya'la narrated to us, Qasim ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us, and Yusuf ibn Asim al-Razi narrated to us, Suleiman al-Shadhkuni narrated to us, both saying: Yahya ibn Yamman narrated to us from Sufyan, from Alqamah ibn Marthad from Sulayman ibn Buraydah from his father that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) visited his mother's grave in a thousand veils and did not see anyone weeping more than on that day. And this is narrated from al-Thawri with this wording, which ibn Yamman reports from al-Thawri.

He then said (peace be upon him and his holy progeny): "I asked my Lord to forgive her, but I was not granted permission. I then sought His permission to visit her grave, and He granted it to me. So visit the graves, for they remind you of death." This was reported by Muslim.
