4286 - Abu Sa'id 'Amr ibn Muhammad ibn Mansur al-'Adl narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Hasan Muhammad ibn Ishaq ibn Ibrahim al-Hanzhali narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Harith Abdullah ibn Muslim al-Fihri narrated to us, saying: Isma'il ibn Muslimah informed us, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam, from his father, from his grandfather, from Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "When Adam committed the sin, he said, 'O Lord, I ask You for Your sake, by the right of Muhammad, why You have forgiven me.' Then Allah said, 'O Adam, how did you know Muhammad when I had not yet created him?' He replied, 'O Lord, because when You created me with Your own hands and breathed into me from Your spirit, I raised my head and saw the name written on the legs of the Throne: 'There is no deity except Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.' So I knew that You would not associate anything with Your name except the most beloved of Your creation to You.'" Then Allah said, 'You have spoken the truth, O Adam. He is indeed the most beloved of My creation. Call upon Me by his right, and I have forgiven you. And had it not been for Muhammad, I would not have created you.'" This is a hadith with a sound chain of narration, and it is the first hadith I mentioned regarding Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam in this book.

- .... Al-Hakim also narrated, as did al-Bayhaqi and Ibn Asakir, from the chain of Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam, from his father, from his grandfather from Umar ibn al-Khattab, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "When Adam committed the sin, he said, 'O Lord, I ask You by the right of Muhammad that You forgive me.'" Allah said, "How did you know Muhammad when I had not yet created him?" He replied, "O Lord, when You created me with Your own hands and breathed into me of Your spirit, I raised my head and saw on the legs of the Throne written, 'There is no deity but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.' So I knew that You would not add to Your Name except the dearest of Your creation." Allah said, "You have spoken the truth, O Adam. He is indeed the dearest of My creation to Me. Since you have asked Me by his right, I have forgiven you, and had it not been for Muhammad, I would not have created you." Al-Bayhaqi said: Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam was unique in narrating this from this angle, and he is weak, and Allah knows best.

13917 - And 'Umar ibn al-Khattab said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "When Adam (peace be upon him) committed the sin that he committed, he raised his head to the Throne and said, 'I ask You, by the right of Muhammad, to forgive me.'" Then Allah revealed to him, "And what is Muhammad?" He said, "Blessed is Your name! When You created me, I raised my head to Your Throne and saw written in it, 'There is no deity but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.' So I knew that there is no one greater in Your sight than one whose name You have placed alongside Your Name." Then Allah revealed to him, "O Adam, he is the last of the prophets from your descendants, and if it were not for him, I would not have created you." Al-Tabarani narrated it in al-Awsat and al-Saghir, and there are those in it whom I do not know.

Then Allah revealed to him, "And what is Muhammad, and who is Muhammad?" He said, "Blessed is Your Name! When You created me, I raised my head to Your Throne and saw it inscribed therein: 'There is no deity except Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. If it were not for him, O Adam, I would not have created you." This narration from Umar is only reported through this chain, and Ahmad ibn Sa'id is the only one who has it.

- .... His statement, blessed and exalted be He: {Then Adam received words from his Lord, and He accepted his repentance. Indeed, He is the Accepting of Repentance, the Most Merciful} (Al-Baqarah 2:37): Al-Tabarani narrated in al-Mu'jam al-Saghir, and al-Hakim and Abu Na'im and al-Bayhaqi both narrated in their works on divine signs, and Ibn Asakir from Umar ibn al-Khattab, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "When Adam sinned the sin he committed, he raised his head to the sky and said, 'I ask You, by the right of Muhammad, to forgive me.'" So Allah revealed to him, "And by Muhammad." Adam then said, "Blessed is Your name! - .... as al-Bayhaqi narrated: that Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and him) would, whenever he returned from his travels, enter the mosque and then go to the noble grave, saying: "Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah. Peace be upon you, O Abu Bakr. Peace be upon you, O my Father," and then he would return to his original position in front of his face (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and seek intercession through him for himself and plead with him to his Lord. This was based on what al-Hakim narrated from the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) that he said: "When Adam committed the sin, he said: 'O Lord, I ask You for the sake of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) that You do not forgive me.'" Allah, the Exalted, replied: "How did you know Muhammad when I had not created him?" He said: "O Lord, when You created me and breathed into me of Your Spirit, I raised my head and saw written on the legs of the Throne: 'There is no deity except Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah,' so I knew that You would not associate anything with Yourself except the most beloved of Your creation." Allah, the Exalted, said: "You have spoken the truth, O Adam. He is indeed the most beloved of My creation to Me. Since you asked Me through him, I have forgiven you, and had it not been for Muhammad, I would not have created you." Al-Hakim said: "This is an authentic chain of narration."

- .... And he also narrated: from Ibn al-Najjar from Ibn Abbas, who said: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) about the words that Adam received from his Lord, and He forgave him. He said: Adam asked, by the right of Muhammad, Ali, Fatimah, Hassan, and Husayn, that You not turn away from him, and He forgave him.
- .... He also narrated it: from Ibn Abbas, Ibn al-Maghazili, in hadith (89) of his book Manaqib Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him) on page 63, edition 1, who said: Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab informed us, by transmission, Abu Ahmad Umar ibn Ubaydullah ibn Shawzab informed us, who said: Muhammad ibn Uthman ibn Mardin narrated to us, who said: Muhammad ibn Sulayman ibn al-Hariq narrated to us, who said: Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Khalaf al-Attar narrated to us, who said: Husayn al-Ashqar narrated to us, who said: Amr ibn Abi Muqaddam narrated to us, from his father, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Abdullah ibn Abbas, who said: The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was asked about the words that Adam received from his Lord, and He forgave him. He said: He asked, by the right of Muhammad, Ali, Fatimah, Hassan, and Husayn, that You not turn away from him, and He forgave him.
- .... Muhammad ibn Sulayman al-Yamani also narrated it in the last part of Volume Four, in hadith (492) of his book Manaqib Amir al-Mu'minin (peace be upon him), saying: Muhammad ibn Ali narrated to us, who said: Ahmad ibn Sulayman narrated to us, who said: Abu Sahl al-Wasiti narrated to us, who said: Waki' narrated to us, from al-A'mash, from Abu Salih, from Ibn Abbas, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: When sin descended upon Adam and he was expelled from the proximity of the Lord of the Worlds, Gabriel came to him and said: O Adam, call upon your Lord. He said: O beloved Gabriel, with what shall I call Him? He said: Say, O Lord, I ask You, by the right of the five whom You will bring forth from my loins in the last times, that You not turn away from me, and have mercy on me. So Adam called on them, and Allah forgave him. And this is His saying: {Then Adam received words from his Lord, and He forgave him. Indeed, He is the Accepting of Repentance, the Most Merciful} (Quran 2:37), and there is no servant who calls upon Allah with them except that Allah will respond to him.

4 - Ibn al-Maghazali: With his chain of narrators from Sa'id ibn Jubayr from Ibn Abbas, who said: The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was asked about the words that Adam received from his Lord, and He forgave him. He said: He asked Him by the right of Muhammad, Ali, Fatimah, Hassan, and Hussain, not to turn away from him, and so He forgave him and overlooked him.
6 - And in al-Manaqib from al-Mufazzal, who said: I asked Ja'far al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) about His statement, the Almighty: {And when his Lord tested Abraham with words...} (Surah al-Baqarah 2:124) He said: These are the words that Adam received from his Lord, and He forgave him. It was that he said, "O Lord, I ask You by the right of Muhammad, Ali, Fatimah, Hassan, and Hussain not to turn away from me," and Allah forgave him. He is indeed the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful. I said to him, "O son of the Messenger of Allah, what does He mean by His statement, 'So He completed them'?" He replied, "He means He completed them to the Mahdi, the Qaim, twelve Imams, nine of whom are from the descendants of Hussain (peace be upon him)."
698 - Hadith the fifty-fifth: From Ibn Abbas who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was asked about the words that Adam received from his Lord, and He forgave him. He said: He asked Him by the right of Muhammad, Ali, Fatimah, Hassan, and Hussain not to turn away from him, and so He forgave him. Ibn al-Maghazali narrated this.
980 - And from Zayd ibn Aslam, from Umar ibn al-Khattab, who raised it: When Adam (peace be upon him) committed the sin, he said, "O Lord, I ask You by the right of Muhammad to forgive me." Allah, the Exalted, then said: "O Adam, how did you know Muhammad when I had not yet created him?" He replied, "O Lord, when You created me with Your hand and blew into me from Your Spirit, I raised my head and saw written on the pillars of the Throne, 'There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.' Then I knew that You would not describe anything to Your names except the most beloved of creation to You." Allah, the Exalted, said: "You have spoken the truth, O Adam. He is indeed the most beloved of creation to Me, and if you ask Me by his right, I have forgiven you. If it were not for Muhammad, I would not have created you."
