Book of Istisqa (Supplication for Rain) - Chapter on Asking the Imam for Istisqa When People Are Stricken by Drought
Volume: (2) - Page Number: (413)
[The text is lengthy, so only the relevant excerpt is provided here]
- His statement: (that Umar ibn al-Khattab would seek istisqa when they were afflicted by drought): with a deformed qaf and a broken ha, meaning they were struck by drought. Al-Zubair ibn Bakkar explained in al-Ansab the nature of what Abbas prayed for in this incident and the time it occurred. He narrated with his chain that when Abbas sought istisqa with Umar, he said: "O Allah, no affliction descends except due to sin, and none is lifted except with repentance. The people have turned to You through me because of my position beside Your Prophet. These are our hands raised to You in repentance and our forelocks humbled before You in supplication. So, grant us rain." The sky then poured like mountains until the earth flourished and the people lived.
- He also narrated from the path of Dawud, from Ata, from Zaid ibn Aslam, from Ibn Umar, who said: Umar ibn al-Khattab sought istisqa in the Year of Ramada with Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib. He mentioned the hadith, and in it, Umar addressed the people. Umar said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) used to see in Abbas what a child sees in a parent. So, follow the example of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) in honoring his uncle Abbas and take him as a means to Allah." In it, it is mentioned that they did not remain long before Allah blessed them with rain.
- Al-Baladhuri narrated from the path of Hisham ibn Sa'd, from Zaid ibn Aslam, saying: from his father instead of Ibn Umar, which suggests that Zaid may have had two teachers in this matter. Ibn Sa'd and others mentioned that the Year of Ramada was in 18 AH, beginning from the departure of the pilgrims and lasting for nine months. Ramada, with a opened ra and a softened mim, was named the year of it due to the severe drought that caused the earth to be greatly dust-laden from the lack of rain. It has been previously mentioned from the narration of al-Isma'ili, which elevates the hadith of Anas mentioned in the story of Umar and Abbas.
- Ibn Hibban also narrated it in his Sahih from the route of Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna with the aforementioned chain, and the story of Abbas indicates the desirability of seeking intercession through righteous and pious individuals and the Ahl al-Bayt of the Prophet. It also illustrates the virtue of Abbas and Umar for Umar's humility towards Abbas and his understanding of Abbas's due right.

1483 - Section: It is recommended to seek rain through one whose righteousness is apparent, as he is closer to having his supplications answered. For when Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sought rain, he did so through al-Abbas, the uncle of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). Ibn Umar said that Umar sought rain during the year of famine through al-Abbas, and he said: "O Allah, this is the uncle of Your Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny); we turn to You through him, so grant us rain." They did not remain in that state until Allah, the Almighty, caused it to rain upon them.

- .... Then the year eighteen passed: during it, a great drought occurred in Medina and the Hijaz, so Umar wrote to all the provinces seeking their assistance. Among those who came to him was Abu Ubaydah from Syria with four thousand pack animals of provisions. Umar distributed these among the Muslims until the food in Medina became plentiful. And when the drought became severe, Umar went out accompanied by al-Abbas, gathered the people, and sought rain, interceding with al-Abbas.
