344 - Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, who said: Hisham informed me, from al-Hajjaj ibn Artah, from al-Hakam ibn Utaybah, from Imarah, from Abu Burdah, from Abu Musa: that Umar (r) said, "It is the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), meaning temporary marriage (mut'ah), but I fear that they will settle down with them under the trees and then leave for Hajj with them."

353 - Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Ja'far narrated to us, who said: Shu'bah narrated to us, from al-Hakam, from 'Imarah ibn 'Umayr, from Ibrahim ibn Abi Musa, from Abu Musa that he used to issue fatwas permitting temporary marriage (mut'ah). Then a man said to him: "Hold on a moment with some of your fatwas, for you do not know what the Commander of the Faithful has instituted in the rites after you." He met him later and asked him. Umar (ra) said: "I knew that the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had done it with his companions, but I disliked them to remain in that state, married in the thickets, and then go out for Hajj with their heads dripping."

371 - Al-Bahz narrated to us, who said: And Afan narrated to us, both saying: Humam narrated to us, who said: Qatadah narrated to us, from Abu Nadrah, who said: I said to Jabir ibn Abdullah, "Ibn al-Zubair (ra) is prohibiting temporary marriage (mut'ah), while Ibn Abbas is advocating it." He said, "The discussion took place at my hands." We practiced temporary marriage (mut'ah) with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)." Afan added: "and with Abu Bakr. Then when Umar (ra) took leadership, he addressed the people and said, 'The Qur'an is the Qur'an, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) is the Messenger. Both practices were permitted during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), one of which was the temporary farewell (mut'ah of Hajj), and the other was temporary marriage (mut'ah of women).

So Uthman (ra) said something to him, and Ali (ra) replied: "You know that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) did that." Uthman (ra) said: "Indeed, but we were afraid." Shubah said: So I said to Qatadah, "What were they afraid of?" He replied: "I do not know."

Uthman (r) said, "Ali will have a say," and then Ali (r) said: "You know that we were able to practice mut'ah with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)." He replied, "Yes, but we were afraid."

1143 - Muhammad ibn Ja'far narrated to us, who said: Shu'bah narrated to us, from al-Hakam, from Ali ibn al-Husayn, from Marwan ibn al-Hakam, who said:I witnessed Ali and Uthman (ra) between Mecca and Medina, and Uthman was forbidding temporary marriage (mut'ah) and the combining of the two (acts of pilgrimage). When Ali (ra) saw this, he went out to them and said: "Here I am, ready for a combining of Umrah and Hajj." Uthman (ra) said: "Do you see me forbidding the people from this while you do it?" He replied: "I would not abandon a practice of the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) for the statement of anyone among the people."

Ali (ra) said: What do you want with something that the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) did and you forbid it? Uthman (ra) replied: Leave us alone with you.

3111 - Hujjaj narrated to us, saying: Hajjaj narrated to us, from Sharik, from al-A'mash, from al-Fudayl ibn Amr, who said: I think he narrated it from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, who said: The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) practiced temporary marriage (mut'ah). Then Urwah ibn al-Zubair said: Abu Bakr and Umar prohibited mut'ah. Ibn Abbas replied: "What does Uriah say?" He said: "He says Abu Bakr and Umar prohibited mut'ah." Ibn Abbas said: "I see them about to perish. I say the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said..." and he will say: "Abu Bakr and Umar prohibited mut'ah."

He forbade us, but then allowed us to marry a woman with a garment for a specified time. Then Abdullah recited: {O you who have believed, do not make unlawful the good things which Allah has made lawful for you} (Surah al-Ma'idah 5:87).

14921 - Narrated to us by Hafsān, who said: Wahib narrated to us, saying: 'Umara ibn Ghuzayyah al-Ansari narrated to us, who said: al-Rabi' ibn Subra al-Juhani narrated to us, from his father, who said: "We went out with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) on the Day of Conquest and stayed for fifteen days, night and day in between." He then said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) gave permission for mut'a (temporary marriage)." I and my cousin went out in the lower part of Mecca, or he said, the upper part of Mecca, and we met a girl from Banu Amir ibn Sa'sa'a who looked like a young she-camel, strong in stature. I was close to being unattractive, and I was wearing a new, fresh cloak, while my cousin was in an old, worn-out cloak. We said to her: "Would you allow one of us to have mut'a with you?" She asked: "Is that permissible?" We replied: "Yes." She then began to look at my cousin, and I said to her: "My cloak is new and fresh, and my cousin's cloak is old and worn-out." She said: "Your cousin's cloak is fine." So, he engaged in mut'a with her, and we did not leave Mecca until the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) forbade it."

14922 - Muhammad ibn Ja'far narrated to us, saying: Shu'bah narrated to us, from which he said: I heard Abd Rabbih ibn Sa'id narrating from Abd al-Aziz ibn Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, from al-Rabi' ibn Subrah, from his father, who was called al-Subri, from the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) that he commanded them to engage in temporary marriage (mut'ah). He said: So I and a man proposed to a woman. Then, after three days, I met the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and he was prohibiting it with the utmost prohibition and saying the strongest words against it, and vehemently forbidding it.

14924 - Yunus narrated to us, saying: Layth, meaning Ibn Sa'd, narrated to us, saying: al-Rabi' ibn Subrah narrated to me, from his father, Subrah al-Juhani, that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) granted us permission for mut'ah (temporary marriage). So I went out with a man who was older than me from the companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and we met a girl from Banu Amir who seemed like a young, untouched maiden. We offered ourselves to her, and she said: "What will you give in exchange?" We replied: "Each of us will offer his cloak." He said that my companion's cloak was of better quality than mine, and I was younger than him. She then began to look at my companion's cloak and said: "You and your cloak will be enough for me." He said: So I stayed with her for three days. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "Whoever has anything remaining with the women he engaged in mut'ah with, let him set her free." He said: So I parted from her.

19406 - Yahya narrated to us, saying: Imran al-Qasir narrated to us, saying: Abu Rija narrated to us, from Imran ibn al-Husayn who said: "The verse on temporary marriage (mut'ah) was revealed in the Book of Allah, Blessed and Exalted be He, and we practiced it with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and no verse was revealed to abrogate it, nor did the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) forbid it until he died."
