Ibn Jurayj: The imam, hadith scholar, and jurist of the Sacred Mosque, Abu al-Walid, also known as Abu Khalid
Abd al-Malik ibn Abd al-Aziz ibn Jurayj, their client, was a Ru.mi of Umayyad origin, originally from Mecca, a jurist and author of many works, one of the notable figures. He narrated hadith from his father, Mujahid, a little, and from Ata ibn Abi Rabah, he narrated more, as well as from Maymun ibn Mihran, Amr ibn Shu'ayb, Nafi', al-Zuhri, and many others. He was born in the early 70s (AH) and met the younger companions of the Prophet, but he did not retain much from them. Al-Sufyanan (i.e., Sufyan ibn Uyaynah and Sufyan al-Thawri) and Muslim ibn Khalid, Ibn Aliyah, Hajjaj ibn Muhammad, Abu Asim, Ruh, Waki', Abd al-Razzaq, and many others narrated from him.
- Ahmad ibn Hanbal said:
"He was one of the containers of knowledge: he and Ibn Abi 'Urobah were the first to compile books."- Abd al-Razzaq said:
"I have not seen anyone pray better than Ibn Jurayj. Whenever I saw him, I knew he feared Allah."- It is said that Ata was asked:
"Whom should we ask after you?" He replied, "This young man, if he lives," referring to Ibn Jurayj. I would say that Ibn Jurayj was reliable, but he did engage in tadlis (concealment of narrators).
- Jarir said: "Ibn Jurayj believed in temporary marriage (mut'ah) and married sixty women."
- Ibn al-Madini said: "There was no one on earth more knowledgeable about Ata than Ibn Jurayj."
- Abu Asim said: "Ibn Jurayj was one of the devout; he would fast throughout the year except for three days each month, and he had a devoted wife." Ibn Abd al-Hakam said: "I heard al-Shafi'i say: 'Ibn Jurayj engaged in temporary marriage with ninety women to the extent that he would use an enema of a quarter of a mudd in the evening in search of intimacy.'"
