The Cow

Hadith No: 1

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Once Allah's Messenger (s.a.w.a.); offered the morning prayer and then faced the people and said, "While a man was driving a cow, he suddenly rode over it and beat it. The cow said, "We have not been created for this, but we have been created for sloughing." On that the people said astonishingly, "Glorified be Allah! A cow speaks!" The Prophet (s.a.w.a.) said, "I believe this, and Abu Bakr and `Umar too, believe it, although neither of them was present there. While a person was amongst his sheep, a wolf attacked and took one of the sheep. The man chased the wolf till he saved it from the wolf, where upon the wolf said, 'You have saved it from me; but who will guard it on the day of the wild beasts when there will be no shepherd to guard them except me (because of riots and afflictions)? ' " The people said surprisingly, "Glorified be Allah! A wolf speaks!" The Prophet (s.a.w.a.) said, "But I believe this, and Abu Bakr and `Umar too, believe this, although neither of them was present there."

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (s.a.w.a.) as saying:

A person had been driving an ox loaded with luggage. The ox looked towards him and said: I have not been created for this but for lands (i. e. for ploughing the land and for drawing out water from the wells for the purpose of irrigating the lands). The people said with surprise and awe: Hallowed be Allah, does the ox speak? Allah's Messenger (s.a.w.a.) said: I believe it and so do Abu Bakr and 'Umar. Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (s.a.w.a.) as saying: A shepherd was tendirig the flock when a wolf came there and took away one goat. Tile shepherd pursued it (the wolf) and rescued it (the goat) from that (wolf). The wolf looked towards him and said: Who would save it on the day when there will be no shepherd except me? Thereupon people said: Hallowed be Allah I Thereupon Allah's Messenger (s.a.w.a.) said: I believe in it and so do Abu Bakr and Umar believe.

Narrated Abu Salamah bin 'Abdur-Rahman:

from Abu Hurairah, who said that the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) said: "While a man was riding a cow it said: "I was not created for this, I was only created to till.'" So the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) said: "I believe in that, myself, and Abu Bakr, 'Umar." Abu Salamah said: "And the two of them were not among the people that day [and Allah knows best]."

- Al-Bukhari said: Ali ibn Abdullah narrated to us, stating: Sufyan narrated to us, stating: Abu al-Zinad narrated to us, from al-A'raj, from Abu Salamah from Abu Huraira, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) prayed the Fajr prayer, then turned to the people and said: "While a man was driving a cow, he mounted it and struck it, and it said: 'We were not created for this; we were only created for tilling the soil.' Then the people said: 'Glory be to Allah! A cow speaks!'" He replied: "I indeed believe in this, both I and Abu Bakr and Umar, and what are they?" Then he continued: "And while a man was among his sheep, a wolf leaped and took a ewe from him. He chased it until it seemed he was about to rescue it from the wolf. The wolf said to him: 'This you have rescued from me, but what is there for it on the Day of Beasts? A day when it will have no shepherd other than me.'" Then the people said: "Glory be to Allah! A wolf speaks!" He replied: "I indeed believe in this, both I and Abu Bakr and Umar, and what are they?" Then Ali narrated to us, saying: Sufyan narrated to us, from Mas'ar, from Sa'd ibn Ibrahim, from Abu Salamah, from Abu Huraira, from the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) with similar words. Al-Bukhari had also confirmed this in his chapter on Renting Land, from Ali ibn al-Madini, and Muslim from Muhammad ibn Abbas, both from Sufyan ibn Uyaina, and both of them narrated it from the path of Shu'bah, each from Mas'ar, with the same content. And al-Tirmidhi said: "This is a sahih, good narration." Muslim presented the first narrative chain from the hadiths of Sufyan ibn Uyaina and Sufyan al-Thawri, both from Abu al-Zinad.

It said, "I was not created for this; we were created for tilling the earth."'" The people said, "A cow speaks!" Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "Verily, I believe in it, I and Abu Bakr and Umar, and there will be none other than them." Then he said, "While a man was among his sheep, a wolf leaped at one of them, but the owner caught up with it and rescued it. The wolf said, 'Who will defend it on the Day of Beasts, a day when it has no shepherd other than me?'" The people said, "Glory be to God! A wolf speaks!" The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) replied, "Then I believe in it, I and Abu Bakr and Umar, and there will be none other than them."

So we went forward with him and found the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had emerged in Mecca.

2186 - Hadith: While a man was driving a cow, he wanted to ride it, but it said: "I was not created for that. I was created for tilling the soil." Agreed upon, authentic. Narrated by al-Bukhari (2 / 68 / 376, 420) and Muslim (7 / 110-111), and al-Tirmidhi (2 / 292 and 294), who deemed it authentic, and Ahmad (2 / 245, 246, 382, 502) through the route of Abu Salamah from Abu Huraira, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) prayed the Fajr prayer and then turned to the people and said: "While a man was driving a cow, he mounted it and struck it, and it said: 'I was not created for this. We were created for tilling the soil.'" The people said: "Glory be to Allah! A cow speaks!" He replied: "Indeed, I believe in this, I and Abu Bakr and Umar, and there will be others." Meanwhile, while a man was with his sheep, a wolf attacked, taking away a sheep. The man pursued it until it seemed he was about to rescue it from the wolf, but the wolf said to him: "This one you are about to rescue from me, but who will take care of it on the Day of Beasts, a day when it has no shepherd other than me?" The people said: "Glory be to Allah! A wolf speaks!" He replied: "Indeed, I believe in this, I and Abu Bakr and Umar, and there will be others." The narratives are similar in al-Bukhari and Muslim, and they mentioned that Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib was also linked with Abu Salamah in a narration with him. At the beginning of a narration with Ahmad, it says: "They used to narrate from the Children of Israel, and there is no harm in that," and it continues: "While a man was driving a cow, and he became tired, so he rode it, and it turned to him..." and then it mentions the hadith. I say: Its chain is good.

- .... Imam Ahmad narrated from Mujahid (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: A الشيخ who lived to see the Days of Ignorance, known as Anbas, told us: I was driving a cow for a family member of ours when I heard from its belly: "O family of Dhurayh," a clear-speaking man was shouting in a articulate voice: "There is no deity but Allah." He continued, so we arrived in Mecca and found the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had come out in Mecca, Dhurayh - with a dotted dhal, an open vowel, broken fa, followed by a shaded tha, and a silent ha.
