- .... And it was narrated from Umar that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was in a gathering of his companions when a Bedouin came, having caught a lizard. He said: "What is this?" They replied: "A prophet of Allah." He said: "By al-Lat and al-Uzza, I will not believe in you, or this lizard will believe in you," and he threw it down before the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). Then the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said to it: "O lizard," and it replied in a clear language that all the people could hear, "Here I am and I am at your service, O Master of those who will gather on the Day of Resurrection." He asked: "Who will you worship?" It replied: "The One whose Throne is in the heavens, whose Dominion is on the earth, whose Way is in the sea, whose Mercy is in Paradise, and whose Punishment is in the Fire." He asked: "Who am I?" It replied: "The Messenger of the Lord of the Worlds and the Seal of the Prophets, and those who affirm you will be successful, while those who deny you will fail." So the Bedouin accepted Islam.

Book of the Signs of Prophethood - Chapter on the Testament of the Lizard to His Prophethood (s)
Volume: (8) - Page Number: (292)
14086 - On the authority of Umar ibn al-Khattab regarding the lizard: That the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) was in a gathering with his companions when a Bedouin from Banu Sulaym came, having caught a lizard and placed it in his cloak. He went to his camp and saw a group of people, so he said: Who are these people? They replied: They are gathered around the one who claims to be a prophet. The crowd parted, and he approached the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) and said: O Muhammad, is there anyone among women with a more deceitful demeanor than you and a lesser character? If it were not that the Arabs would call me hasty, I would hasten to you and kill you, and I would take satisfaction in your death before all people. Umar said: O Messenger of Allah, let me kill him. He replied: O Rasul (s), did you not know that the forbearing one is close to being a prophet? Then the Bedouin turned to the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) and said: By al-Lat and al-Uzza, I will not believe in you. The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) had said to him: O Bedouin, what drove you to say what you said and to speak falsehood, and you did not show honor in my presence? He replied: And you would speak to me further, showing disdain for the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.)? By al-Lat and al-Uzza, I will not believe in you until this lizard believes in you. So he took the lizard out of his cloak and placed it before the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) and said: If this lizard believes in you, I will believe in you. The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) said: O lizard, and the lizard spoke to him in a clear Arabic tongue that all the people understood, responding: Here I am at your service, O Messenger of the Lord of the Worlds. Then the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) said: Who do you worship? The lizard replied: The one whose Throne is in the heavens, whose authority is on the earth, whose path is in the sea, whose mercy is in Paradise, and whose punishment is in the Fire. The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) asked: Who am I, O lizard? It answered: You are the Messenger of Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, and the Seal of the Prophets. Blessed is he who believes in you, and misguided is he who denies you. The Bedouin said: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that you are truly the Messenger of Allah. By Allah, I have come to you, and there is no one on the face of the earth whom I despise more than you. And by Allah, you are now dearer to me than myself and my own children. I believe in you with my heart, my skin, my innermost being, my outward appearance, my secret, and my public display. The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) said to him: Praise be to Allah who guided this to what is supreme and cannot be surpassed. Allah, the Exalted, does not accept it except with prayer, and prayer is not accepted except with the Qur'an. So the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) taught him: Praise and {Say, He is Allah, One} (Surah Ikhlas 112:1). The Bedouin said: O Messenger of Allah, I have not heard anything more beautiful in the vast expanse or in rhythmic prose than this. The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) replied: This is the Word of the Lord of the Worlds and is not poetry. And when you recite: {Say, He is Allah, One} (Surah Ikhlas 112:1), it is as if you have recited a third of the Qur'an. And when you recite: {Say, He is Allah, One} (Surah Ikhlas 112:1) three times, it is as if you have recited the entire Qur'an. The Bedouin said: What a great deity, for our god accepts the little and gives the abundant! Then the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) said: Give the Bedouin, and they gave him until he was abundantly provided. Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf said: O Messenger of Allah, I want to give him a she-camel as a means of drawing closer to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, something better than a bulky one and above a Bedouin, and it is worth ten. The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) replied: You have described what you will give, and I will describe to you what Allah will give you in return. He said: Yes. The Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) said: You will receive a she-camel made of pure gold, empty inside, with legs of green emerald and a neck of yellow emerald, with a canopy on it, and on the canopy are garments of fine silk and brocade. It will pass you over the Sirat (Bridge) like a flashing lightning. The Bedouin left the presence of the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.), and a thousand Bedouins met him on a thousand mounts, with a thousand spears and a thousand swords. He asked them: Where are you going? They replied: We are going to fight this one who lies and claims to be a prophet. The Bedouin said: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.). They said to him: You have renounced your faith. He replied: I have not renounced my faith, and he told them this story. They all said: There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. This reached the Prophet (s.a.w.a.), and he received them in a cloak, and they dismounted from their mounts to pray, what they had turned away from except that they were saying: There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. They said: Command us in your affairs, O Messenger of Allah. He replied: You will enter under the banner of Khalid ibn al-Walid. He said: There was no Arab among them who was not secure, and they all became united except for Banu Sulaym. Al-Tabarani narrated this in the small and medium works from his shaykh Muhammad ibn Ali ibn al-Walid al-Basri. Al-Bayhaqi said: The burden in this hadith is on him. I say, and the rest of his narrators are men of authenticity.

948 - Muhammad ibn Ali ibn al-Walid al-Basri narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn Abd al-A'la al-San'ani narrated to us, saying: Mu'tamir ibn Sulayman narrated to us, saying: Kahmis ibn al-Hasan narrated to us, saying: Dawud ibn Abi Hind narrated to us, from al-Sha'bi, from Abdullah ibn Umar, from his father, Umar ibn al-Khattab, with the narration about the lizard: That the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was in a gathering of his companions when an Arab from Banu Sulaym came to him. He had caught a lizard and placed it in his cloak, intending to take it to his home. Seeing a group of people, he said, "Who are these people?" They replied, "They are gathered around this one who claims to be a prophet." He then made his way through the crowd and approached the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), saying, "O Muhammad! Is there anyone among women who can match the one with such a demeanor, more deceitful and more detested to you than you? If it were not that your people would call me hasty, I would be quick to kill you and would find joy in your death before all people." Umar said, "O Messenger of Allah, let me kill him." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) replied, "Did you not know that the forbearing is almost a prophet?" He then turned to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said, "By al-Lat and al-Uzza, I will not believe in you," even though the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had said to him, "O Arab, what made you say what you said, speaking untruths, and not respecting my presence?" The man replied, "And you speak to me with contempt, O Messenger of Allah? By al-Lat and al-Uzza, I will not believe in you, or will this lizard believe in you?" He then took the lizard from his cloak and placed it before the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), saying, "If this lizard believes in you, I will believe in you." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "O Lizard, speak!" and the lizard spoke with a clear Arabic tongue that all the people understood, "Here I am and gladly at your service, O Messenger of the Lord of the Worlds." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) asked, "Whom do you worship?" The lizard replied, "The One whose throne is in the heavens, whose dominion is on earth, whose path is in the sea, whose mercy is in Paradise, and whose torment is in Hell." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) then asked, "Who am I, O Lizard?" The lizard answered, "You are the Messenger of the Lord of the Worlds and the Seal of the Prophets. Blessed is the one who believes you, and wretched is the one who denies you." The Arab then said, "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and you are truly the Messenger of Allah. By Allah, I came to you, and there was no one on the face of the earth more detested to me than you. And now, you are the most beloved to me, more than myself, my child, or anything else." My heart and my outer self are at peace with you." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "Praise be to Allah who has guided you to this religion, which rises and cannot be surpassed. Allah only accepts it with prayer, and He does not accept prayer without the Qur'an." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) taught him to say, "Praise be to Allah," and "Say, He is Allah, One." The Arab said, "O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, I have not heard anything in the open land or in the desert more beautiful than this." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) replied, "This is the speech of the Lord of the Worlds, and it is not poetry. When you recite {Say, He is Allah, One} (Surah Ikhlas 112:1) once, it is as if you have recited a third of the Qur'an. If you recite {Say, He is Allah, One} twice, it is as if you have recited two-thirds of the Qur'an. If you recite {Say, He is Allah, One} three times, it is as if you have recited the entire Qur'an." The Arab said, "Our God is the best of gods, for He gives little with ease and grants much." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "Give the Arab," and they gave him until he was overwhelmed. Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I want to give him a she-camel as a draw closer to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, that is less than a Bactrian camel and more than a simple Arab one, and she is in calf." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "You have described what you will give, and I will describe what Allah will give you in return." The man said, "Yes." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) continued, "You will have a she-camel with a hollow udder, its legs of green beryl, and its neck of yellow beryl, with a howdah on it, and the howdah will be adorned with fine silk and brocade. It will pass you on the Sirat (Bridge) in a flash of lightning." The Arab left the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and encountered a thousand Arabs on a thousand mounts, with a thousand spears and a thousand swords. He said to them, "Where are you going?" They replied, "We are going to fight this one who lies and claims to be a prophet." The Arab said, "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." They said, "You have apostatized!" He told them this story, and they all replied, "There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." This reached the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and he met them in a cloak. They knelt, kissing what they could reach of him, and saying, "There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." They said, "Command us with your command, O Messenger of Allah." He replied, "Enter under the banner of Khalid ibn al-Walid." Among all the Arabs, none were safe from the fear of a thousand except the people of Banu Sulaym, who did not see Khalid ibn al-Walid. They did not narrate this complete story from Dawud ibn Abi Hind except Kahmis, and none narrated it from Kahmis except Mu'tamir. Muhammad ibn Abd al-A'la was unique in this.

5996 - Muhammad ibn Ali ibn al-Walid al-Sulami al-Basri narrated to us, who said: Muhammad ibn Abd al-A'la al-San'ani narrated to us, who said: Mu'tamir ibn Sulayman narrated to us, who said: Kahmis ibn al-Hasan narrated to us, who said: Dawud ibn Abi Hind narrated to us, from Amir al-Shabi, who said: Abdullah ibn Umar narrated to us, from his father Umar ibn al-Khattab, regarding the story of the lizard, that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was in a gathering with some of his companions when a Bedouin man from Banu Sulaym came, having caught a lizard and placed it in his sleeve, and went to his camp (he saw a group) and said: "What is this group gathered for?" They said: "For this man who claims to be a prophet." Then the man parted the people and approached the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said: "O Muhammad, are the women to be blamed for being with a man of such a demeanor, more deceitful than you, or more despicable? If it were not that my people would call me hasty, I would act hastily against you and kill you, and I would take delight in your death before all people." Umar said: "O Messenger of Allah, let me kill him." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) replied: "Did you not know that the forbearing is almost a prophet?" Then he turned back to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said: "By al-Lat and al-Uzza, I will not believe in you." And the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) had said to him: "O Bedouin, what has led you to say what you said, and to speak untruths, when you did not honor my gathering?" He replied: "He is also surrounded by others," showing contempt for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), "by al-Lat and al-Uzza, I will not believe in you, or that you are to be believed in," and took a lizard from his sleeve, throwing it before the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and said: "If this lizard believes in you, I will believe in you." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "O lizard," and the lizard spoke in clear Arabic, understandable to all the people, "Here I am at your service, and glad to assist you, O Messenger of the Lord of the Worlds." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) then asked: "Whom do you worship?" The lizard replied: "The One whose Throne is in the heavens, whose dominion is on earth, whose way is in the sea, whose mercy is in Paradise, and whose punishment is in the Fire." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) asked: "Who am I, O lizard?" The lizard replied: "You are the Messenger of the Lord of the Worlds and the Seal of the Prophets. Blessed is he who believes in you, and wretched is he who denies you." The boy said: "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that you are truly the Messenger of Allah. You have come to me, and there is no one on the face of the earth more despicable to me than you. By Allah, you are now more beloved to me than myself, my parents, and I have believed in you with my hair, my skin, my inner self, my outer self, my secret, and my openness." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) replied: "Praise be to Allah who guided you to this religion that is superior and cannot be surpassed. Allah does not accept it except with prayer, and He does not accept prayer except with the Quran." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) taught him to say, "Alhamdulillah" and "Say, He is Allah, One." The boy said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have not heard anything in prose or verse more beautiful than this." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "This is the speech of the Lord of the Worlds and not poetry. And when you recite: {Say, He is Allah, One} three times, it is as if you have recited the entire Quran." The boy said: "How excellent is our God, who accepts little and grants much." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "Give to the boy," and they gave him until they overwhelmed him. Then Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I want to give him a she-camel as an offering to draw closer to Allah, something better than a pet and not as much as a boy, and she is pregnant." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "You have described what you wish to give, so I will describe to you what Allah will give you in return." Abd al-Rahman asked: "What is that?" The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) replied: "You will have a she-camel made of empty pearls, with legs of green emerald, and a neck of yellow beryl, adorned with a canopy of fine silk and brocade, and you will travel on her, crossing the bridge as swiftly as lightning." The boy left the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and encountered a thousand Bedouins on a thousand mounts, with a thousand spears and a thousand swords. He said to them: "Where are you going?" They replied: "We intend to fight this one who lies and claims to be a prophet." The boy said: "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." They said to him: "Have you renounced your faith?" He replied: "I have not renounced my faith," and he told them the story. They all said: "There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." This reached the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and he met them without a cloak. They dismounted from their mounts, approaching with what they had turned away from, and were saying: "There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." They said: "Command us with an action that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) loves." He replied: "You will be under the banner of Khalid ibn al-Walid." There was no one among the Arabs who was not safe from them, a thousand men altogether, except for Banu Sulaym. None narrated this hadith from Dawud ibn Abi Hind with this detail except Kahmis, and none from Kahmis except Mu'tamir. It was uniquely transmitted by Muhammad ibn Abd al-A'la.

He said, "What is this group gathered here?" They replied, "Upon this one who claims to be a prophet." Then people parted, and he turned to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said, "O Muhammad, no woman has ever given birth to one with a more deceitful demeanor than you, or one more hateful to me than you. Then he turned back to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and said, "By al-Lat and al-Uzza, I will not believe in you." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) replied, "This is the speech of the Lord of the Worlds and not poetry. It was a gift to me." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "You have described what you wish to give. I will describe to you what Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will give you in return." He replied, "Yes." The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "You will have a she-camel made of shining pearl, hollow inside, with limbs of green emerald, and upon it will be a canopy of silk and brocade. They dismounted from their mounts, kissing what they had turned away from, and saying, "There is no deity but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." They said, "Command us with an action you love, O Messenger of Allah." He replied, "You will be under the banner of Khalid ibn al-Walid." 35364 - From Umar: That the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was in a gathering with his companions when a Bedouin from Banu Sulaym came, having caught a lizard and placed it in his sleeve to take it to his camp, where he planned to roast it and eat it. When he saw the crowd, he said: What is this? They replied: This is what is being mentioned, that he is a prophet. So he came until he squeezed through the people and said: By al-Lat and al-Uzza, no woman could encompass one with a demeanor more hateful to me than you, nor more despised! Were it not that my people would call me impatient, I would hurry to you, kill you, and take delight in your death, the red, the black, the white, and others. Then I would say: O Messenger of Allah, let me stand and kill him. Umar said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) replied: O Umar, did you not know that the forbearing is almost a prophet? Then he turned to the Bedouin and said: What compelled you to say what you said and to speak untruths, and not to respect my gathering? The Bedouin replied: And you dare to speak to me also, as if you are belittling the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)? By al-Lat and al-Uzza, I will not be one who believes in you or who considers you worthy. This lizard can speak! He took the lizard from his sleeve and placed it before the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), saying: If this lizard believes in you, I will believe in you. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: O lizard! and the lizard replied in clear Arabic, a language all the people could understand: Here I am at your service, O adornment of those who gather on the Day of Resurrection! He asked: Whom do you worship, O lizard? The lizard replied: The One whose Throne is in the heaven, whose authority is on the earth, whose path is in the sea, whose mercy is in Paradise, and whose punishment is in the Fire. He asked: And who am I, O lizard? The lizard replied: You are the Messenger of the Lord of the Worlds and the Seal of the Prophets, and those who believe in you have succeeded, while those who deny you have failed. The Bedouin said: I will not follow a trace after this, by Allah! I came to you with no one on the face of the earth more hateful to me than you, and now you are dearer to me than my parents and my own life. I love you both inwardly and outwardly, in secret and in public. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and that you are the Messenger of Allah. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: Praise be to Allah who has guided you to this religion, which is exalted and cannot be surpassed. Allah only accepts it with prayer, and He does not accept prayer without the Quran. The Bedouin said: Teach me. So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) taught him: Praise and {Say, He is Allah, One} (Surah Ikhlas 112:1). The Bedouin said: Teach me more, O Messenger of Allah! I have not heard anything in the vastness of the earth or in rhythmic verses better than this. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) replied: O Bedouin, this is the speech of the Lord of the Worlds, and it is not poetry. Moreover, if you recite {Say, He is Allah, One} once, it will be as if you have earned the reward of one who has read a third of the Quran. If you recite {Say, He is Allah, One} twice, it will be as if you have earned the reward of one who has read two-thirds of the Quran, and if you recite {Say, He is Allah, One} three times, it will be as if you have earned the reward of one who has read the entire Quran. The Bedouin said: What a great God our deity is, who accepts the little and grants the abundant! The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: Do you have any wealth? He replied: There is not in Banu Sulaym a single man poorer than I. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said to his companions: Give him. So they gave him until they had overwhelmed him. Then Abdur Rahman ibn Awf stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah, I have a she-camel in calf, neither too large like a Bactrian nor too small like a Bedouin, that can keep up with you or lag behind you. It was gifted to me on the Day of Tabuk. I would like to draw closer to Allah by passing it on to the Bedouin. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: You have described your she-camel well, and I will describe to you what is with Allah as a reward for you on the Day of Resurrection. The man said: Yes. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) replied: You will have a she-camel made of hollow pearl, its legs of green emerald, its neck of yellow beryl, with a canopy upon it, and on the canopy are silk and brocade. It will pass by you on the Sirat like a fleeting flash of lightning, and every one who sees you on that Day will envy you. Then Abdul Rahman said: I am pleased. So the Bedouin left the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and encountered a thousand Bedouins from Banu Sulaym on a thousand mounts, with a thousand swords and a thousand spears. He said to them: Where are you going? They replied: We are going to confront the one who has mocked our gods and kill him. He said: Do not do that! I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. They said: You have apostatized. He replied: I have not apostatized, and he told them the story. So they all said: There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. When this reached the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), he met them in a cloak, and they dismounted from their mounts, kissing what they saw from him, while they were saying: There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. Then they said: O Messenger of Allah, command us with leaders. He replied: Be under the banner of Khalid ibn al-Walid, for no one from the Arabs is safer from them than the thousand, all except Banu Sulaym.

Ibn Asakir - Tarikh Damishq - Sirah Nabawiyyah
What was narrated about the testimony of the lizard (dub) to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) regarding his Messenger

Ship: (4) - Page Number: (381/382)
1139 - Abu al-Fath Nasr ibn Muhammad ibn Abd al-Qawi al-Faqih narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Fath Nasr ibn Ibrahim al-Zahid narrated to us, saying: al-Faqih Abu Nasr Muhammad ibn Ibrahim ibn Ali al-Haruni narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Hasan Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Imran ibn Musa ibn Urwah ibn al-Jarrajh narrated to us, from his father, who said: Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Hatim narrated to me, from Abu Abdullah al-Husayn ibn Muhammad ibn Yahya al-Alawi in Medina, from his father, from his grandfather, from Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), who said: While the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was in his gathering speaking to the people about reward and punishment, Paradise and Hell, resurrection and resurrection after death, an Arab from Banu Sulaym approached, holding in his right hand dried bones and in his left hand a lizard. He came forward, placing the bones in front of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), then crushed them with his foot, and said: O Muhammad, do you think your Lord can return them to life in a new form? The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) wanted to respond to him but waited for an answer from the heavens. Then Gabriel descended upon the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) with the verse: {And he struck for us a parable and forgot his own creation. He said, "Who will give life to these bones when they have rotted away?" @ Say, "He will give them life who created them for the first time, and He is, of all creation, Knowing"} (Ya-Sin 36:78-79). The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) recited it to the Arab, who said: By Lat and Uzza, no one in the wombs of women and the loins of men has a way of speaking that is more deceitful than yours or more hateful to me than you. If it were not that my people would call me hasty, I would kill you and ruin the balance of black and white among the Banu Hashim with your death. Ali ibn Abi Talib was poised to act upon this. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: O Ali, did you not know that the forbearing one is almost a prophet? The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) then said to the Arab: O Arab, evil is what you have brought us and terrible is the way you face me. By Allah, I am indeed Mahmoud (the Praised One) on earth and Amin (the Trustworthy One) in the heavens with Allah. The Arab replied and threw the lizard into the lap of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), saying: By Allah, I will not believe in you until this lizard believes in you. So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) took it by its tail and said: O lizard! It replied: Here I am, O adornment of those who will gather on the Day of Resurrection. The lizard continued: I will worship Allah, who has His throne in the heavens, His authority on earth, His pathway in the sea, His reward in Paradise, and His punishment in Hell. The Prophet asked: Who am I? The lizard answered: You are Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Abd al-Muttalib ibn Hashim ibn Abd Manaf ibn Qusayy ibn Kilab, tracing his lineage back to Ibrahim al-Khalil (peace be upon him). You are the Messenger of Allah. Those who believe in your truth will not be deprived, and those who deny you will be disappointed. The Arab turned away, laughing, while the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: Do you mock Allah and His signs? He returned to him and said: My father and mother be sacrificed for you! Surely, the news is not like witnessing. I bear witness with my flesh, blood, and bones that there is no deity except Allah, and that you are His Messenger. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: You come to us as a disbeliever and will return as a believer. Do you have any wealth? The Arab replied: By the one who sent you with the truth as a messenger, there is nothing in Banu Sulaym poorer or with less than me. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) stood up and said: Who has a mount to carry his brother on? Adi ibn Hatim al-Ta'i stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah, I have a she-camel, a reddish-brown one, that is ten months pregnant. When it approaches, it will lower its head, and when it turns away, it will make a sound. Ash'ath ibn Wa'il gifted it to me the morning I arrived with you from the Battle of Tabuk. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) replied: You will have a she-camel from me, a fine white one.

[The text is lengthy, so only the relevant excerpt is provided here]
- Al-Bayhaqi narrated from Umar ibn al-Khattab that a Bedouin caught a lizard and said: "I will not believe in you until this lizard believes." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) approached the lizard and said: "O lizard." The lizard replied: "Here I am at your service, O Messenger of Allah, O adornment of those who will gather on the Day of Resurrection." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) asked: "Who do you worship?" The lizard replied: "The One whose Throne is in the heavens, whose authority is in the earth, whose path is in the sea, whose mercy is in Paradise, and whose punishment is in the Fire." The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) then asked: "Who am I?" The lizard replied: "The Messenger of the Lord of the Worlds and the Seal of the Prophets. Blessed is he who believes you, and wretched is he who denies you." Upon hearing this, the Bedouin said: "By Allah, I will not seek another sign after this. I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." Al-Bayhaqi added that this was also narrated by Aisha and Abu Huraira, and what we mentioned is among the most reliable chains of narration.... Al-Haydari said: The men in his chains of narration and routes are not among those suspected of fabrication, although there is weakness among them. However, one cannot hastily claim fabrication in such matters, as the miracles of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) are عظيمة (great), some of which are more profound than this, so there is nothing within them that is legally deniable, especially with the narration of the Imams on these matters, and it is weak but does not reach the level of fabrication.
