Volume: (5) - Page: (274)
- .... As for the complaint of the red-footed bird to the Chosen One (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) when it was grieved by the loss of its chicks, Abu Dawood narrated from the hadith of al-Hasan ibn Sa'd from Abdul Rahman ibn Abdullah ibn Mas'ud from Abdullah who said: We were with the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) on a journey when a man entered a thicket and came out holding a red-footed bird's egg. The red-footed bird began to flutter over the head of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and his companions, and he said: Which of you has caused this (bird) to grieve? A man from the group replied: I did, I took its egg. He said: Return it, out of mercy.

- .... Al-Bukhari also narrated this in al-Adab al-Mufrad, and his wording was: from Abdullah that the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) camped in a place, and a man took a red-footed bird's eggs. The bird came fluttering over the head of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and he said: Which of you has caused this (bird) to grieve with its egg? A man said: I, O Messenger of Allah, took its egg. The Prophet said: Return it, out of mercy.
- .... And al-Bayhaqi narrated it from the hadith of Abu Muawiyah from Abu Ishaq al-Shaibani from Abdul Rahman ibn Abdullah ibn Mas'ud from his father, who said: We were with the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) on a journey when we passed by a tree with two red-footed bird chicks in it. We took them, and the red-footed bird came to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and was expressing its distress. He said: Who has caused this (bird) to grieve with its chicks? We said: We have. He said: Return them. So we returned them.

A snake emerged from it, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "Whoever believes in Allah and the Day of Resurrection should not wear his sandals until he shakes them out." Al-Khara'iti also narrated in Makarem al-Akhlak from Ibn Abbas, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) wanted to perform ablution and removed his sandals, and a black figure fell from them.
