- .... As for the standing of the snake before Him and its salutation to Him (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), al-Waqidi said in his book al-Maghāzī - when mentioning the Ghazwah of Tabūk -: He said: And a snake appeared in the path of the people, mentioned to be large in size and impressive in form, and the people recoiled from it. It approached until it stood before the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), who was on his mount, for a long time, while the people looked on. Then it turned and distanced itself from the road. It then reared up, and the people approached until they caught up with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). He said to them: "Do you know who this is?" They replied: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said: "This is one of the eight from among the jinn who came to listen to the Qur'an. It saw something of the truth upon him when the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was about to return to his place that prompted it to greet him. And here it is, conveying peace to you, so greet it." The people all said in unison: "And peace be upon it, and mercy of Allah," as the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "Respond to the servants of Allah, whatever they may be."

- Muhammad ibn Umar mentioned and Abu Na'im affirmed it in al-Dala'il, as did Ibn Kathir in al-Bidaya, and our Shaykh in al-Khasa'is al-Kubra. He said: A serpent confronted the people on their journey, mentioned for its size and form, and the people recoiled from it. It then advanced until it stood before the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), who was on his mount, for a long time, while the people watched it. Then it twisted and withdrew, avoiding the path. It then reared up, and the people approached until they caught up with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). He said: "Do you know who this is?" They said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said: "This is one of the eight from among the jinn who came to me to listen to the Quran, and he saw upon you the truth-" When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) intended to greet him, "and here he is, reading you my greetings. So greet him." The people all said: "And peace be upon him and the mercy of Allah and His blessings."

- .... And the story of Jabir will be mentioned later in a similar context during the Battle of Tabuk: that a gigantic serpent confronted them on the road, and the people retreated from it. It then approached until it stood before the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), who was on his mount, for a long time, while the people looked on. Then it twisted around and withdrew from the road, standing aside. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "Do you know who this is?" They said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He replied: "This is one of the eight from among the jinn who came to me to listen to the Qur'an." Al-Mawahiib stated: "And this is a rebuttal to those who claim that jinn do not eat or drink," meaning that they are nourished by scent instead.

- .... Abu Na'im narrated from al-Waqidi who said: The people were at the Battle of Tabuk, and a huge serpent obstructed them on their way. The people tried to avoid it, but it approached until it stood before the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), who was on his mount, for a long time, while the people looked at it. Then it curled up and moved away from the path, standing upright. The people approached, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "Do you know who this is?" They said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He replied: "This is one of the eight from among the jinn who came to listen to the Qur'an. He saw the truth upon you when the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was addressed in your town to submit, and here he is, sending you greetings." The people said: "And peace be upon him and the mercy of Allah."
