1935 - Sufyan narrated to us, from Sulayman ibn Abi Muslim, the maternal uncle of Ibn Abi Najih, who heard Sa'id ibn Jubair say: Ibn Abbas said on Thursday, "And what is Thursday?" Then he wept until his tears moistening his cheeks, and he said, at another time, "His tears were like pebbles." We said, "O Abu al-Abbas, what is Thursday?" He replied: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was feeling his pain more severely and said, 'Bring me something to write for you, a document from which you will never go astray after me.'" But they argued, and it is not right for there to be any argument in the presence of a Prophet. They said, 'What is the matter with him? Is he babbling?' Sufyan meant he was speaking unintelligibly. They sought to understand him, so they went to reiterate to him. He said, "Leave me, for what I am in is better than what you are calling me to," and he ordered three things, and Sufyan said at another time that he advised three things. He said, "Expel the polytheists from the Arabian Peninsula, and grant allowance to the delegations in a manner similar to how I used to grant them allowances." Sa'id remained silent about the third, so I do not know if he remained silent about it intentionally or if he simply forgot, and Sufyan said at another time it was either that he left it out or forgot it.

2990 - Wahb ibn Jarir narrated to us, who said: My father narrated to us, from his own father, who said: I heard Yunus narrating from az-Zuhri, from Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah, from Ibn Abbas, who said: When the death of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) approached, he said: "Bring me a writing tablet so I can write you a document, after which you will not go astray." And there were men in the house, including Umar ibn al-Khattab. Umar said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is overwhelmed by pain, and you have the Qur'an; the Book of Allah is sufficient for us." He said that the people of the house began to disagree and dispute, with some saying, "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) will write for you," or he said, "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is near to writing for you," while others said what Umar had said. When they raised their voices and differed greatly, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was distressed, he said: "Leave me be." Ibn Abbas would say: "The great distress, all the distress, was what prevented the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) from writing them that document — their disagreement and clamor."

3111 - Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, saying: Ma'mar narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah, from Ibn Abbas, who said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was in his final moments, and there were men in the house, including Umar ibn al-Khattab (r), the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "Bring me a writing tablet and ink, so I can write you a document from which you will never go astray again." Umar said, "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) is overcome by pain, and we have the Quran; the Book of Allah is sufficient for us." So the people of the house began to disagree and argue, some saying, "Bring them near; he will write you a book you will not go astray from after that," while others said what Umar had said. When they continued to speak foolishly and conflict at the side of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "Leave!" Ubaydullah said: Ibn Abbas would say, "Indeed, the great tragedy, the utmost tragedy, was what prevented the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) from writing that document for them—his being unable to do so because of their disagreement and confusion."

Then I saw tears streaming down his cheeks like strings of pearls. They said, "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) is delirious."
