5821 - Zakariya bin Yahya narrated to us, who said: Ishaq bin Ibrahim narrated to us, who said: Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, who said: Ma'mar narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from Ubaydullah bin Abdullah, from Ibn Abbas, who said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was near death and there were men in the house, including Umar bin al-Khattab, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "Bring me a writing tablet, and I will write for you a document you will never go astray after." Umar said, "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) is overwhelmed by pain, and you have the Quran. The Book of Allah is sufficient for us." So they gathered in the house, and he said: "Come closer; I will write you a document you will never go astray after." And some said what Umar had said. When they increased in noise and disagreement around the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), he said to them: "Get up." Ubaydullah said: Ibn Abbas would then say, "The greatest loss is what was missed from the writing that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) wanted to write, that they would not go astray after him, due to the increase of their noise and disagreement."

5823 - Muhammad ibn Mansur narrated to us from Sufyan, who said: I heard Sulayman from Sa'id ibn Jubayr from Ibn Abbas, who said: "On Thursday - and what is Thursday? - the pain intensified for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and he said: 'Bring me something to write on, so I can write you a document from which you will never go astray again.' But they began to dispute, and it is not proper to dispute in the presence of a Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny).' They said: 'What is wrong with him? Is he delirious?' They sought to ask him, and they went to repeat what he had said to him. He replied: 'Leave me, for what I am in is better than what you are calling me to.' And he advised them at his death, saying: 'Expel the polytheists from the Arabian Peninsula and allow the delegations as I used to allow them.'"

Umar then said: "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) is overwhelmed by pain, and you have the Qur'an; the Book of Allah is sufficient for us."
