7474 - Zakariya ibn Yahya narrated to me, saying: Ishaq ibn Ibrahim narrated to us, saying: Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, saying: Ma'mar narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah, from Ibn Abbas, who said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was in his final moments, and there were men in the house, including Umar ibn al-Khattab, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "Bring me some ink and paper, so I may write for you a document from which you will never go astray after this."
Umar then said: "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) is overwhelmed by pain, and you have the Qur'an; the Book of Allah is sufficient for us." So, they gathered in the house, and some said: "Get up, and he will write you a document from which you will never go astray after this," while others said what Umar had said. When they were raising their voices and differing greatly in front of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), he said to them: "Leave me be." Ubaydullah said: And Ibn Abbas would say: "The true misfortune is what was missed from the writing that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) intended to write, that you would not go astray after him, due to the confusion and disagreement that arose."
