- .... Al-Bukhari said: Qutaybah narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Sulayman al-Ahwal, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, who said: Ibn Abbas said: "On Thursday—and what is Thursday?—the pain intensified for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and he said: 'Bring me something to write on, so I can write you a document that you will never go astray after.' But they disputed, and it is not proper to dispute in the presence of a Prophet." He said, 'What is wrong with him? Is he delirious? Ask him.' So they went to speak to him, and he said: 'Let me be, for what I am in is better than what you are inviting me to.' He then advised them on three things, saying: 'Drive the polytheists out of the Arabian Peninsula, and honor the delegations as I used to honor them.' He fell silent about the third or said, 'I have forgotten it.' Al-Bukhari narrated this in another place, and Muslim reported it from the hadith of Sufyan bin Uyayna.
- .... Al-Bukhari then said: Ali ibn Abd Allah narrated to us, Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, from Makhlad, from al-Zuhri, from Ubayd Allah ibn Abd Allah, from Ibn Abbas, who said: "When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was nearing death, and there were men in the house, the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: 'Come, I will write you a document that you will never go astray after.' But some of them said, 'The Messenger of Allah is being overcome by pain, and you have the Quran; the Book of Allah is sufficient for us.'" So the people of the house disagreed and argued, some saying, 'Bring him writing materials; he will write you a document that you will never go astray after,' and others saying otherwise. When they continued to chatter and argue, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "Leave."

Al-Bukhari said: Qutaybah narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us from Sulayman al-Ahwali, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, who said: Ibn Abbas said: "On Thursday—and what is Thursday?—the pain became severe for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and he said: 'Bring me a writing material so I can write you a document, and you will not go astray after it, ever.' But they disputed, and it is not appropriate to dispute in the presence of a Prophet." They said: 'What is his matter? Is he delusional? Ask him for clarification.' So they went to respond to him. He continued: 'Leave me; what I am in is better than what you are asking me to do.' Then he advised them of three things, saying: 'Expel the polytheists from the Arabian Peninsula, and receive the delegations as I used to receive them.' He fell silent about the third or said, 'I have forgotten it.' Al-Bukhari narrated this in another place, and Muslim narrated it from the hadith of Sufyan ibn Uyaynah.

- .... Al-Bukhari then said: Ali ibn Abdullah narrated to us, saying: Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, saying: Muammar informed us, from al-Zuhri, from Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah, from Ibn Abbas, who said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was near death and there were men in the house, the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "Bring me a writing material so I can write you a document that you will never go astray after this." Some of them said, "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah is overwhelmed by pain, and you have the Quran; the Book of Allah is sufficient for us." So, the people of the house began to argue and dispute, with some saying, "Bring him writing material; he will write you a document that you will never go astray after," and others saying otherwise. When they continued to speak foolishly and differ, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "Leave!" Ubaydullah said: Ibn Abbas remarked, "The great loss is what prevented the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) from writing that document for them, due to their disagreement and clamor." Muslim narrated this from Muhammad ibn Rafi and Abd ibn Hamid, both from Abd al-Razzaq, in similar terms, and Al-Bukhari included it in several places in his Sahih, from the narrations of Muammar and Yunus, from al-Zuhri, with the same content.
