- Yahya ibn Hammad narrated to us, saying: Abu 'Awaneh narrated to us, from Sulayman, meaning al-Amash, from Abdullah ibn Abdullah, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, who said: The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) fell ill on Thursday, and he (Ibn Abbas) began to weep and say: Thursday, and what is Thursday? The Prophet's (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) pain grew severe. He said: "Bring me a inkpot and a sheet of paper, I will write you a document that you will never go astray after." Some of those who were with him said: "The Prophet of Allah is delirious." He was then asked, "Shall we bring you what you asked for?" He replied, "Or after what?" Then, he did not call for it.

- Sufyan ibn Uyayna narrated to us from Sulayman ibn Abi Muslim, the maternal uncle of Ibn Abi Najih, who heard Sa'id ibn Jubayr say: Ibn Abbas said: "Thursday, and what is Thursday?" He said: The pain intensified for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) on that day, and he said: "Bring me a inkpot and a sheet, and I will write you a book that you will never go astray after it." But they disputed, and it is not appropriate for there to be a dispute in the presence of a Prophet. He said: "What is wrong with him? Is he delirious? Ask him." So they went to reiterate to him. He replied: "Let me be, for what I am in is better than what you are calling me to," and he recommended three things. He said: "Expel the polytheists from the Arabian Peninsula and welcome the delegations in a manner similar to how I used to welcome them." He fell silent about the third, so I do not know whether he said it and I forgot it, or he deliberately remained silent about it.

- Muhammad ibn Umar narrated to us, saying: Usamah ibn Zayd al-Laythi and Marwan ibn Rashid narrated to me, from al-Zuhri, from Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah ibn Utbah, from Ibn Abbas, who said: When the death of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) drew near, there were men in the house, including Umar ibn al-Khattab. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "Bring me a writing material so I can write you a book from which you will not go astray after it." Umar said: "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah is overwhelmed by pain, and you have the Quran; the Book of Allah is sufficient for us." So the people of the house disagreed and argued, with some saying: "Bring what the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) will write for you," and others saying what Umar had said. When the noise and disagreement increased, and they worried the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), he said: "Leave me be." Ubaydullah said: Ibn Abbas would say: "The great loss, the utmost loss, was what prevented the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) from writing that book for them — their disagreement and noise."

- Muhammad ibn Umar narrated to us, saying: Ibrahim ibn Isma'il ibn Abi Habibah narrated to me, from Dawud ibn al-Hasin, from Ikrimah, from Ibn Abbas, that the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said in the illness from which he died: "Bring me a pen and a sheet of paper so I can write you a document from which you will never go astray again." Umar ibn al-Khattab said, 'What about so-and-so and so-and-so, the cities of Rome? The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) is not dead until we conquer them. If he were dead, we would wait for him, just as the Children of Israel waited for Moses.' Zaynab, the wife of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), said: "Do you not hear the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) giving you his last instructions?" But they were noisy, and he said, 'Get up.' So when they stood up, the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) passed away in his place.
