- Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz narrated to us, saying: Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Ali al-San'ani narrated to us, saying: Ishaq ibn Ibrahim ibn Ibad narrated to us, saying: Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, saying: Mu'mar narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah ibn Utbah, from Ibn Abbas, who said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was near death, and there were men in the house, including Umar ibn al-Khattab, the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "Come, I will write for you a book from which you will never go astray after it."
Umar said, "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) is overwhelmed by pain, and you have the Quran; God's Book is sufficient for us." So, the people of the house differed and argued, some saying, "Bring them closer; the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) will write for you," and others saying what Umar had said. When they continued to chatter and disagree excessively in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "Stand up." Abdullah said that Ibn Abbas would then say: "Indeed, the great calamity is that what prevented the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) from writing that book for them was their disagreement and clamor." This was narrated by al-Bukhari in his Sahih from Ali ibn al-Madini and others, and by Muslim from Muhammad ibn Rafie and others, from Abd al-Razzaq.
