- Abu Muhammad Abdullah ibn Yusuf al-Isbahani said: Abu Sa'id Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ziad al-Basri informed us in Mecca, saying: Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad al-Za'farani narrated to us, saying: Sufyan ibn Uyaynah narrated to us from Sulayman ibn Abi Muslim, who said: I heard Sa'id ibn Jubayr say: I heard Ibn Abbas say: H and Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Abdan informed us, saying: Ahmad ibn Ubayd al-Saffar informed us, saying: Isma'il ibn Ishaq al-Qadi narrated to us, saying: Ali ibn al-Madini narrated to us, saying: Sufyan narrated to us, saying: I heard Sulayman mention from Sa'id ibn Jubayr that Ibn Abbas said: "Thursday, and what is Thursday?" Then he cried until his tears wet the pebbles. I said, 'O Abu Abbas, what is Thursday?' He replied: 'The pain has intensified for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny).' He said: 'Bring me something to write, so I can write you a book from which you will never go astray again.' He said: But they disputed, and it is not proper to dispute in the presence of a Prophet. They said: What is the matter with him? Is he rambling? Ask him for clarification. So they went to repeat to him. He said: 'Leave me, for what I am in is better than what you are trying to draw me into.' He instructed them, at his death, regarding three things, saying: 'Drive the polytheists from the Arabian Peninsula and receive the delegations with something similar to what I used to receive them.' He then fell silent about the third or mentioned it, but I forgot it." This is the wording of Ali ibn al-Madini's narration, which is more complete. Ali added that Sufyan said they only believed he wanted to write about the appointment of Abu Bakr. Al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated it in their Sahihs from Qutaybah and others from Sufyan.

- Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz narrated to us, saying: Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Ali al-San'ani narrated to us, saying: Ishaq ibn Ibrahim ibn Ibad narrated to us, saying: Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, saying: Mu'mar narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah ibn Utbah, from Ibn Abbas, who said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was near death, and there were men in the house, including Umar ibn al-Khattab, the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "Come, I will write for you a book from which you will never go astray after it." Umar said, "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) is overwhelmed by pain, and you have the Quran; God's Book is sufficient for us." So, the people of the house differed and argued, some saying, "Bring them closer; the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) will write for you," and others saying what Umar had said. When they continued to chatter and disagree excessively in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "Stand up." Abdullah said that Ibn Abbas would then say: "Indeed, the great calamity is that what prevented the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) from writing that book for them was their disagreement and clamor." This was narrated by al-Bukhari in his Sahih from Ali ibn al-Madini and others, and by Muslim from Muhammad ibn Rafie and others, from Abd al-Razzaq.

- Abu Muhammad Abdullah ibn Yusuf al-Asbahani narrated to us, dictating, who said: Abu Sa'id Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ziyad al-Basri informed us in Mecca, saying: Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad al-Za'farani narrated to us, and he said: Sufyan ibn Uyaynah narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Muslim, who said: I heard Sa'id ibn Jubayr say: I heard Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him and his brother) say on Thursday, "And what is Thursday?" Then he wept and said: The pain of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) intensified, and he said: "Bring me something to write a document for you, so you will not go astray after it, ever again." But they began to dispute, and it is not appropriate to dispute in the presence of a prophet. He said: "Leave me, for what I am in is better than what you are inviting me to," and he ordered them to do three things, saying: "Drive the polytheists out of the Arabian Peninsula, and honor the delegations in a manner similar to how I used to honor them," and he mentioned a third, which I have forgotten." Al-Bukhari narrated it in his Sahih from Qutaybah and others from Sufyan, and Muslim narrated it from Sa'id ibn Mansur, Qutaybah, and others from Sufyan.
