Volume: (12) - Page Number: (589)
6193 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, saying: Abdul Razzaq narrated to us. And al-Dabari narrated to us from Abdul Razzaq, who said: Ma'mar informed us, from al-Zuhri, from Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah, from Ibn Abbas, who said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was near death, and there were men in the house, including Umar ibn al-Khattab, the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "Bring me a writing tablet and I will write you a document, so you will not go astray after that."
Umar ibn al-Khattab said, "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) is overwhelmed by pain, and you have the Qur'an; the Book of Allah is sufficient for us." So the people of the house disagreed and argued, with some saying, "Bring what the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) will write you, and you will not go astray after that," and others saying what Umar had said. When they continued to babble and disagree excessively in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), he said, "Get out of here." Al-Dabari added that Ubaydullah said: Ibn Abbas would say, "The great misfortune is what prevented the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) from writing them that document— their disagreement and confusion."
