- .... And it is also narrated in the two Sahihs that they both reported from Ibn Abbas: that he used to say on Thursday, "And what is Thursday? Then he wept until his tears soaked the pebbles." We said, "O son of Abbas, what is Thursday?" He replied: "The pain became severe for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and he said, 'Bring me a book so that I can write for you something, and you will not go astray after me ever again.'" But they disputed, and he said, "It is not proper for there to be a dispute in my presence." Then someone said, "What is wrong with him? Is he delirious? Ask him." So they went to repeat their questions to him. He replied, "Leave me alone with what I am in; it is better than what you are in." Then he ordered three things and said, "Expel the polytheists from the Arabian Peninsula, and grant the delegations what I used to grant them." Ibn Abbas was asked about the third matter, and he said, "Either he did not speak it, or he spoke it in sorrow, and it is possible that he said it, but I forgot."

- .... In both Sahihs, it is also narrated that they reported it together from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) who said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was in his final moments, there were men in the house, including Umar ibn al-Khattab. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "Bring me a writing material so I can write you a document, and you will not go astray after it." Umar said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) is overwhelmed by pain, and you have the Quran; the Book of Allah is sufficient for us." So the people began to disagree and argue, some of them saying, "Bring him writing material so he can write you a document that you will not go astray after," and others saying, "The statement of Umar is sufficient." When they continued to speak frivolously and dispute in front of him (peace be upon him), he said to them: "Get up," and they stood up. Ibn Abbas would say: "Indeed, the great loss is what prevented the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) from writing you that document."

- .... Abu Bakr said: Al-Hasan ibn al-Rabi' narrated to us from Abd al-Razzaq from Ma'mar from al-Zuhri from Ali from Abdullah ibn Abbas from his father, who said: When the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was near death, and there were men in the house, including Umar ibn al-Khattab, the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "Bring me a pen and a sheet of paper so I may write for you a document, and you will not go astray after me." Umar then said a word meaning: that the pain had overcome the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). Then he said: "We have the Quran; the Book of Allah is sufficient for us." Those in the house began to differ and argue, with some saying: "The statement is what the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said," and others saying: "The statement is what Umar said." When they increased in noise and confusion and disagreement, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) became angry and said: "Get up; it is not appropriate for a prophet to be differed with in this manner." So they stood up, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) died on that day. Ibn Abbas used to say: "The great loss is what prevented us from the Book of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)," referring to the disagreement and confusion. I say: This hadith has been narrated by both Shaykhan, Muhammad ibn Isma'il al-Bukhari and Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj al-Qushayri, in their Sahihs, and all the narrators have agreed on its transmission.

- .... on many matters covered in the books of hadith, and even if it were only his rejection of the words of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) during his illness: "Bring me a inkpot and a shoulder blade so I can write for you something you will not go astray after me," and his statement: "What he said," and the silence of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) about it "And the most astonishing thing is that he said that day: 'The Book of Allah is sufficient for us.'" Thus, the Muslims present in the house dispersed, some saying, "The statement is as the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said," and others saying, "The statement is as Umar said." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, as the noise increased and the voices were raised, "Stand away from me, for it is not befitting for a prophet to be in the midst of this dispute." Is there any remaining distinction or merit of prophethood if اختلاف (ikhtilaf) has occurred between the two statements and Muslims are leaning between them? Some may favor this one and some that one, so this does not indicate anything other than that the people equated him with Umar and made the two statements a matter of disagreement, with each group going to support one of them, just as two individuals among the Muslims might differ in some rulings, with some supporting this one and others supporting that one.
