- .... Al-Nawawi said: The scholars unanimously agreed that Umar's statement, "The Book of Allah is sufficient for us," was a sign of his strong understanding and keen insight, because he feared that things might be written which they could not manage, and thus they would deserve punishment for being in the form of clear injunctions. He wanted to ensure that the door to ijtihad (independent reasoning) remained open for the scholars.

Umar said: "Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) is overwhelmed by pain, and you have the Qur'an; the Book of Allah is sufficient for us." Then the people of the house began to differ and argue. When they raised their voices and many conversations were happening in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), he (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "Leave!" Ibn Abbas would say: "The great calamity is what prevented the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) from writing that book for them—namely, their disagreement and noise."

Then he wept until his tears soaked the pebbles, and it was said to him: "O Ibn Abbas, what is Thursday?" He replied: "The pain became severe for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) on Thursday," and he said: "Bring me writing materials, I will write you a document from which you will never go astray again." But they began to dispute, and it is not proper to dispute in the presence of a prophet. He said: "What is wrong with him? Is he delirious? Ask him for clarification," and they were sent back to him. He then said: "Leave me, for what I am in is better than what you are calling me to." He instructed them regarding three things, saying: "Expel the polytheists from the Arabian Peninsula, and receive the delegations in a manner similar to how I used to receive them." Sufyan said: Sulayman stated, "I do not know whether Sa'id mentioned the third or forgot it, or remained silent about it."

- Ahmad ibn Umar ibn Muhammad al-Isbahani narrated to us, saying: Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Ziyad narrated to me, saying: Ahmad ibn Abdul Rahman al-Wahbi narrated to us, saying: Ibn Wahb narrated to us, from Uways, from al-Zuhri, who said: Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah informed me, from Ibn Abbas, who said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) was nearing death, and there were men in the house, including Umar, he said: "Bring me a book, so I can write for you a book from which you will not go astray after me." Umar then said, "Surely the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) is overcome by pain, and you have the Qur'an; the Book of Allah is sufficient for us." So the people of the house differed and argued, some of them saying, "Bring him what he can write for you, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)," and others saying what Umar had said. When they continued to raise their voices and argue in confusion around the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), he said: "Leave me alone." Ubaydullah said that Ibn Abbas would then say: "The great loss, all the loss, was that their confusion and disagreement prevented the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) from writing them that book." This was narrated by al-Bukhari from Yahya ibn Sulayman, from Ibn Wahb.

Chapter Twelve: Regarding His (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) Intention to Write a Book for His Companions, but They Disagreed, So He Did Not Write
Volume: (12) - Hadith Number: (247/248)
- Both Shaykhain narrated from Sa'id ibn Jubayr who said: Ibn Abbas said: "Thursday," and what is Thursday? Then he wept until his tears soaked the gravel. I said, "O Ibn Abbas, what is it about Thursday?" He said: "The pain intensified for the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and he said, 'Bring me something to write on; I will write you a book, and you will never go astray after it.'" Umar said, "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) is overwhelmed by pain, and you have the Qur'an; the Book of Allah is sufficient for us." So the people of the House differed and argued, with some saying, "Bring them closer; he will write for you," and others saying what Umar had said. They disputed, and there should be no dispute in the presence of the Prophet. They said, "What is wrong with him? Is he delusional? Ask him for clarification," and they went to repeat to him. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "Leave me; the more you engage in useless talk and disagreement in my presence, the more it burdens me. What I am in is better than what you are urging me to." He then advised them at his death regarding three things, saying: "Expel the polytheists from the Arabian Peninsula and welcome the delegations as I used to welcome them." He was silent about the third, or he said he forgot it. Ibn Abbas said: "Indeed, the tragedy is the removal; the tragedy is what prevented the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) from writing this book for them – their disagreement and confusion." Al-Bayhaqi narrated with a sound chain from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) called for a sheet to write on at his death, a book that would prevent them from going astray afterward. And in another narration, it mentioned two books for his ummah, ensuring they would not be wronged or oppress others. And there was noise in the house, so Umar backed down, and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) rejected it.
