Volume: (2) - Page Number: (280)
3742 - Shumur ibn Dhul-Jawshan, Abu al-Sabghah al-Dhubabi, from his father and from him Abu Ishaq al-Sab'i is not considered reliable for narration, as he was one of the killers of al-Husayn (peace be upon him), and he was killed by the companions of al-Mukhtar. Abu Bakr ibn Ayash narrated from Abu Ishaq, saying: Shumur used to pray with us, and then say: "O Allah, You know that I am noble, so forgive me." I said: "How can Allah forgive you when you aided in the killing of the son of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)?" He replied: "Woe to you! What are we to do? These rulers of ours commanded us to do something, and we did not dare to oppose them. If we had opposed them, we would have been worse than these herding donkeys." I said: "This is indeed a disgraceful excuse, for obedience is only in what is good."

52 - Shumer ibn Dhi al-Jawshan, the Dhababi who is commonly said to have severed the head of al-Husayn was one of the commanders of Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad. He was confronted by the followers of al-Mukhtar, who ambushed him, and he fought until he was killed. Abu Bakr ibn Abi al-Dunya said: Abu Bashar Harun al-Kufi narrated to us, saying: Abu Bakr ibn Iyash narrated to us from Abu Ishaq, who said: Shumer ibn Dhi al-Jawshan used to pray with us the Fajr (dawn) prayer, then sit until sunrise, and then pray again, saying: "O Allah, You are Noble and love nobility, and You know that I am noble, so forgive me." I said, "How can Allah forgive you when you have gone out against the son of the granddaughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) and helped in his killing?" He replied, "Woe to you! What are we to do? These commanders of ours commanded us to do something, so we did not dare to oppose them. If we had opposed them, we would have been worse than these donkeys." I said, "And his father had companionship (with the Prophet), named Sharhabil, and he is also said to be Aws, or Uthman, al-Amiri, the Dhababi, and his nickname - meaning Shumer's - was Abu al-Sabigha." Al-Waqidi said: Isma'il narrated to us from Abu Ishaq, who said: "I saw the killer of al-Husayn, Shumer ibn Dhi al-Jawshan. I did not see anyone in Kufa wearing a cloak (tilsam) except him." Al-Hafiz Ibn Asakir mentioned that he arrived in Yazid's presence with the family of al-Husayn (peace be upon him and his holy progeny).

So I said to him: "You have a poor opinion on the day you hasten to kill the son of the granddaughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)."
