- Ahmad ibn Abdullah al-Faqih narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Bakhtiyar ibn al-Mundhari narrated to me in the Sacred Mosque, saying: Al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn al-Suwadi narrated to me, saying: Al-Turaythithi narrated to me as an ijazah, saying: Da'i ibn Mahdi narrated to me as an ijazah, saying: Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad al-Istarabadhi narrated to me, saying: Abu Ahmad al-Qattan narrated to us, saying: Ja'far ibn Ahmad ibn Bayyan narrated to us, saying: Uthman ibn Isa al-Tabba' narrated to us, saying: Talhah ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Zurara ibn A'yun, from Jabir al-Ju'fi, from Muhammad ibn Ali from Jabir who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "Eating clay fosters hypocrisy." This hadith is not authentic; it seems to be fabricated and was circulated by individuals who are not trustworthy.

Part Two and Three: His (peace be upon him) Guidance on Healing with Spiritual Divine Remedies, Both Simple and Compound, and with Natural Remedies
Chapter on Mentioning Some Simple Remedies and Foods that Were Spoken of by Him (peace be upon him), Arranged Alphabetically - Letter Ta - Clay
Volume: (4) - Page Number: (309)

- Clay: It is mentioned in fabricated hadiths, none of which are authentic, such as the hadith: "Whoever eats clay has helped in killing himself." And a similar hadith: "O Humayra, do not eat clay, for it protects the abdomen, yellows the complexion, and diminishes the radiance of the face." Any hadith regarding clay is not valid and has no basis from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) except that it is of poor quality, harmful, and blocks the channels of the veins. It is cold, dry, and very astringent, and it prevents diarrhea while causing coughing up of blood and sores in the mouth.

Abu Ahmad said: And I do not know anyone narrating this from Suhayl ibn Abi Salih except for Abd al-Malik, and he is unknown (majhul). Issue of Impurity in a Liquid - Section on Disliking the Consumption of Clay
Volume: (0) - Page Number: (00)

7838 - Section: Ahmad said: "I dislike the consumption of clay," and there is no authentic hadith on this, but he stated that it is harmful to the body and it is said to be of poor quality, and leaving it is better than eating it. Ahmad disliked it primarily due to its potential harm. However, if it is something that can be used for medicinal purposes, such as Armenian clay, then it is not disliked. If it is something that has no harm or benefit, like a small amount, it is permissible to eat it because the default ruling is permissibility, and the reasoning for disliking it is based on harm, which is not present here, thus it is not disliked.

519 - Eating clay isḥaram (forbidden) for every Muslim, al-Da'ilami narrated it as a marfu' (elevated) hadith from Anas, and he also presented it without a chain from Jabir, marfu' with the wording: "Eating clay leads to hypocrisy".... Al-Da'ilami also recorded from Aisha: "O Humayra, do not eat clay, for it contains three qualities that cause illness, enlarge the abdomen, and yellow the complexion." Al-Darqutni reported it from her as well, with the wording: "O Humayra, do not eat clay, for it yellows the complexion." Al-Bayhaqi said that nothing authentic (sahih) is established in this regard, and in al-Durar, he mentioned, following al-Zarkashi, that there are hadiths about eating clay and its prohibition, with some scholars compiling a treatise on the subject, but their hadiths are not authentic. However, al-Qari said in al-Mawdu'at: "I say, the lack of authenticity does not necessitate the denial of its being حسن (hasan) or ضعيف (da'if). Al-Suyuti mentioned in his Jamia' al-Saghir a narration from al-Tabarani from Abu Huraira, marfu', that 'whoever eats clay is as if he is assisting in the killing of himself.'" I say, mentioning it in al-Jamia' al-Saghir does not imply that it is acceptable, as some have challenged certain hadiths in it as being fabricated (mawdu'). So reflect on this.

- He mentioned a hadith: "Whoever indulges in eating clay has aided in killing himself," and in its chain is Abdullah ibn Marwan, concerning whom he said: "Unknown." I say: He is known in condition. Al-Zahabi stated: Ibn Adi said, "There is some concern regarding his hadiths," and Ibn Hibban said, "He attaches sound texts to other chains; it is not permissible to use him as proof."
- Then al-Bayhaqi mentioned the hadith from another source, wording it as: "Whoever eats clay is as if he has aided in killing himself," and in its chain is Abd al-Malik ibn Mahran. He mentioned that Ibn Adi regarded him as unknown. I say: He was narrated from by Baqiyyah and Sahl ibn Abdullah al-Maruzi. Al-Uqayli said, "He is a possessor of munkar (denounced) narrations, overwhelmed by confusion, and does not establish anything in hadith."
- Then al-Bayhaqi said: "Even if this were authentic, it would not indicate prohibition; rather, it would suggest a dislike for excessive consumption of it."

- It is disliked to eat raw or undercooked meat or clay or dirt, as mentioned in Al-Ri'ayah and others. Ahmad said: "I dislike the eating of clay, and there is no authentic hadith on it, except that it can be harmful to the body." It has been noted that there are differing opinions among the companions regarding whether Ahmad's statements on dislike imply prohibition or mere discouragement. Ibn Aqil emphatically stated that eating clay is disliked if its harm is certain, but it is not disliked for other reasons. In Al-Mughni, it is confirmed that eating something like Armenian clay, which was traditionally used for healing, or a small amount that poses no harm or benefit, is not disliked.

- Ja'far narrated to us, saying: Yusuf ibn Ya'qub ibn Salim al-Ahmad narrated to us, Hisham ibn al-Hakam narrated to us, and Ja'far narrated to us, saying: My uncle al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Bayan also narrated to me, from Hisham ibn Salim, that both said: Ja'far ibn Muhammad narrated to us, saying: My father Muhammad narrated to me, from his father Ali, from his father Hussein from his father Ali ibn Abi Talib and Jabir ibn Abd Allah al-Ansari, both said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said, "Indeed, Allah, the Almighty, created Adam from clay and made the consumption of clay forbidden for his descendants." The Sheikh said: And these two hadiths are false with their chains in mentioning clay; no one brought them forth except Ja'far. It was between him and the matter of fabricating hadith that he intended to place them in the narration as if from the Prophet, and Ja'far intended to establish a chapter on clay just as he made one on theft, and he would fabricate hadith on the People of the House.
