648 - Muhammad ibn Ubayd narrated to us, saying: Sharhabil ibn Mudrik narrated to us, from Abdullah ibn Naji, from his father, who said: He traveled with Ali (r) and was his companion at the time of purification. When they passed near Nineveh while he was heading to Siffin, Ali (r) called out, "Be patient, Abu Abdullah, be patient, Abu Abdullah." I said, "What did he say?" He replied: "I entered upon the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) one day, and his eyes were overflowing with tears. I said, 'O Prophet of Allah, has someone made you angry? What is the matter with your eyes overflowing with tears?'" He said, "No, rather Gabriel stood up from beside me earlier and told me that Hussein will be killed by the banks of the Euphrates." Then he asked, "Would you like me to let you smell his soil?" I said, "Yes." So he stretched out his hand, took a handful of soil, and gave it to me. I could not help but have my eyes overflow as well.
