- Ibn Abbas narrated from Anas ibn Malik, who said: The king of the realm sought permission from his Lord to visit the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and he was granted permission. It was the day of Umm Salamah, and the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: "O Umm Salamah, keep the door closed; let no one enter." While she was at the door, Hussein ibn Ali entered, leaping and vaulting in. He landed and jumped onto the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) began to kiss and embrace him. Then the angel said to him, "Do you love him?" He replied, "Yes." The angel continued, "Your ummah will kill him, and if you wish, I can show you the place where he will be killed." So, he showed him, bringing forth a flat piece of land or red soil. Umm Salamah took it and placed it in her robe. Thabit said, "We used to say, 'It is Karbala.'" Al-Baghawi narrated this in his Mu'jam, and Abu Hatim recorded it in his Sahih, saying, "If you wish, I can show you the place where he will be killed." He replied, "Yes," and the angel then gathered a handful of the place where he would be killed and showed it to him, bringing him a flat piece of land. He then mentioned the rest of the hadith.
- Ahmad narrated it in his Musnad, stating: Umm Salamah said, "Then Hussein ibn Ali came to enter, but I tried to prevent him. He jumped and entered, and began to sit on the Prophet's (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) back, on his shoulder, and on his lap." She said, "Then the angel spoke and mentioned the hadith." He said, "He struck his hand on a red clay, and Umm Salamah took it and gathered it in her headscarf." Thabit said, "We learned that this was Karbala."
- He also mentioned it in the Nihayah al-Gharib, and she said: "I saw the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) wiping Hussein's head and crying. I said, 'Why are you crying?'" He replied, "Gabriel told me that my son will be killed in a land called Karbala." Then he handed me a handful of red soil and said, "This is from the soil of the earth where he will be killed. When it turns to blood, know that he has been killed." Umm Salamah said, "I kept the soil in a vial with me and would say, 'A day will come when it turns to blood,' thinking it would be a great day." Al-Mulla narrated this in his Sirah.
- And from Umm Salamah, she said: "Gabriel was with the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and Hussein was with him. He cried, so I left him and went to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny). Gabriel said to him, 'Do you love him, O Muhammad?' He replied, 'Yes.' Gabriel said, 'Your ummah will kill him. If you wish, I can show you the soil of the earth where he will be killed.' So, he spread his wing to the earth and showed him a land called Karbala." Al-Tabarani narrated this.
- And from her: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) lay down one day and woke up, looking troubled. He returned and fell asleep again, then woke up, still looking troubled, but less than before. Then he returned, woke up, and had in his hand red soil." I said, 'What is this, O Messenger of Allah?' He said, 'Gabriel informed me that my son will be killed in the land of Iraq,' meaning Hussein. I said to Gabriel, 'Show me the soil of the earth where he will be killed.' He replied, 'This is its soil.'" Al-Tabarani narrated this.
- And from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: "I entered upon the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and his eyes were overflowing with tears. I said, 'O Prophet of Allah, has someone made you angry? Why are your eyes overflowing?' He said, 'Gabriel (peace be upon him) stood up from me before and told me that Hussein will be killed by the banks of the Euphrates. He then said, "Would you like to smell the soil of his grave?"' I replied, 'Yes,' and he extended his hand, gathered a handful of soil, and gave it to me, and I could not hold back my eyes from overflowing." Ahmad narrated this, and so did Ibn al-Dahhak.
