- And Muhammad ibn Ubayd al-Tanafnsi said: Sharhabil ibn Mudrik al-Ja'fi narrated to us from Abdullah ibn Najji, from his father, that he traveled with Ali ibn Abi Talib, who was the keeper of his purifying water. When they passed by Nineveh, while he was en route to Siffin, Ali called out: "Be patient, O Abu Abdullah! Be patient, O Abu Abdullah! At the bank of the Euphrates." I asked, "Who is Abu Abdullah?" He replied: "I entered upon the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and his eyes were overflowing with tears. I said, 'O Prophet of Allah, has someone made you angry? Why are your eyes overflowing with tears?' He said, 'Yes, Gabriel rose from me before and told me that Husayn will be killed by the bank of the Euphrates.' And he said, 'Would you like me to let you smell his soil?' I replied, 'Yes.' So he extended his hand, took a handful of soil, and gave it to me, and I could not help but feel my eyes overflow as well.'"

- Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Abi al-Khayr narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Qasim Yahya ibn As'ad ibn Bosh informed us, saying: Abu Ghalib ibn al-Banna narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Ghina'im ibn al-Mamun informed us, saying: Abu al-Qasim ibn Hababah narrated to us, saying: Abu al-Qasim al-Baghdadi narrated to me, saying: Yusuf ibn Musa al-Qattan told us, saying: Muhammad ibn Ubayd mentioned him and then said, and Abu al-Qasim al-Baghdadi ibn Abi Shaybah al-Habtati added: Umara ibn Zadhan narrated to us, saying: Thabit narrated to us from Anas, who said: An angel of the rain asked his Lord, Mighty and Majestic be He, for permission to visit the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and He granted him permission. It was on the day of Umm Salamah. The Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: O Umm Salamah, keep the door closed; let no one enter upon us. While she was at the door, Al-Husayn ibn Ali came, leaped, and went inside. He jumped onto the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny), and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) began to kiss and embrace him. The angel said to him: Do you love him? He replied: Yes. The angel said: Indeed, your ummah will kill him, and if you wish, I can show you the place where he will be killed. So he showed it to him, and he brought back soil or red dust, which Umm Salamah took and placed in her shawl. Thabit said: We used to say it is Karbala.
- And Ubadah ibn Ziyad al-Asadi said: Amr ibn Thabit narrated to us from al-A'mash, from Abu Wa'il Shaqiq ibn Salamah, from Umm Salamah, who said: Al-Hasan and Al-Husayn were playing in front of the Prophet (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) in my house when Gabriel descended and said: O Muhammad, your ummah will kill this son of yours after you, and he gestured with his hand to Al-Husayn. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) wept and hugged him to his chest. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: I have placed this soil with you. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) smelled it and said: It smells of sorrow and tribulation. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) said: O Umm Salamah, when this soil turns to blood, know that my son has been killed. Umm Salamah kept it in a flask and would look at it every day, saying: A day will come when you turn to blood, and it will be a great day.

- Abu al-Hasan al-Daraqutni said: Abu Muhammad Muhammad ibn Nu'uh al-Jund Ysaburi narrated to us, saying: Ali ibn Harb al-Jund Ysaburi narrated to us, saying: Ishaq ibn Sulayman narrated to us, saying: Amr ibn Abi Qays narrated to us, from Yahya ibn Sa'id Abu Hayyan, from Qudamah al-Dhubbi, from Khurda'a bint Samir, from her husband Harthama ibn Sulaymi, who said: "We went out with Ali in one of the expeditions, and he marched until he reached Karbala, where he stopped at a tree and prayed towards it. Then he took some earth from the ground, smelled it, and said: 'Ah, how fortunate you are, O soil! A people will kill with you who will enter Paradise without account.'" He continued: So we returned from our campaigns, and Ali was killed, and I forgot the hadith. Then I found myself in the army that marched against al-Husayn. When I reached him, I looked at the tree and remembered the hadith. I rode ahead on my horse and said: "I bring you glad tidings, son of the granddaughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his holy progeny)," and I told him the hadith. He asked: "With us or against us?" I replied: "Neither with you nor against you. I left dependents behind and have left..." He said: "If not, then swear an oath in the land." So, by the One in whose hand is the soul of al-Husayn, no man will witness our killing today except he will enter Hell." Then I ran away, fleeing across the land until al-Husayn's demise was hidden from me.

- Muhammad ibn Zakariya al-Ghulabi said, from Abd Allah ibn al-Dahhak from Hisham ibn Muhammad: When water was diverted over the grave of al-Husayn, it receded after forty days and the trace of the grave was erased. Then a Bedouin from Banu Asad came and began to take handfuls of soil, smelling them, until he landed on the grave of al-Husayn and wept, saying: "Blessed be my father and mother, how delightful you were and how pleasant your soil is, even in death." Then he wept and began to say:
"They wanted to hide his grave from his enemy, *
but the sweet soil of the grave revealed it."
