Probition of eating soil and seeking cure from the soil of Grave of Imam Husain

Hadith No: 1
Al-‘Allami - al-Intisar
Volume: (9) - Page Number: (323)

- Al-‘Allami said: It is one of the established matters in our faith that Allah, the Exalted, specially honored Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) by placing healing in his soil. It is permissible for a person to seek healing through it, taking an amount equivalent to a small handful of his pure soil, mixing it with water, and drinking it, for example.... The Shia have a tradition of this, so you will find them seeking healing through it and recommending it to others... Allah, the Exalted, has healed many through it, some of whom had chronic illnesses. Meanwhile, other Muslim sects do not prohibit the consumption of soil, but they do not issue fatwas on seeking healing with the soil of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him). As for the followers of Ibn Taymiyya, they have created a commotion over this issue, equating it to outright shirk (associating partners with Allah, the Exalted).

- And in Kāmil al-Ziyārāt and Miṣbāḥ al-Mutahajjid: When asked about the soil of al-Husayn's (peace be upon him) grave, he said: "It is forbidden for people to eat their flesh, but it is permissible for them to eat our flesh, although only a small amount, like a chickpea."
- And in the narration recorded in Miṣbāḥ al-Zā'ir in a lengthy narrative: "A small amount may be used from it in times of need, like a chickpea."

- It is narrated: that a man asked al-Sadiq (peace be upon him), saying: "I heard you say that the soil of Husayn (peace be upon him) is one of the singular remedies, and it does not encounter any illness except that it will digest it." He replied, "That was the case, or I may have said that. What is the matter with you?" The man said, "I took it, but I did not benefit from it." He said, "It may be that it has an accompanying prayer, so whoever takes it without reciting the prayer and using it will hardly benefit from it." The man then asked, "What should he say when he takes it?" He replied, "Receive it before everything else and place it on your eyes, and do not take more than a pinch of it, for whoever takes more is as if he has eaten from our flesh and blood."

- .... In any case, {nothing of it is permissible} referring to the clay, from the {soil of al-Husayn ((peace be upon him))}, and it is permissible to seek healing by using it without disagreement, rather there is consensus, in both forms, upon it, and the texts regarding it are abundant or even mutawatir, some of which include other forms of emphasis. Indeed, {one should not exceed the amount of a small handful} without any disagreement I find on this, and it may well be possible to achieve consensus on it, limiting oneself to what is certain in opposing something known to be forbidden. The statement of al-Sadiq ((peace be upon him)) to Hasan al-Sudir is relevant here: "Do not consume more than a small handful from it," for if one eats more than that, it is as if they have consumed our flesh and blood. And in the report from one of them ((peace be upon them)), it is mentioned that Allah, the Exalted, created Adam from clay and prohibited clay to his offspring. I said, "What do you say about the clay from the grave of al-Husayn ibn Ali ((peace be upon them))?" He said, "It is forbidden for people to eat their flesh, but {it is permissible for them to eat our flesh, albeit in small amounts, like a handful."}

- As for the claim that there is no transgression beyond a small handful (hamṣa), it is argued that there is no disagreement on this. This is supported by the words of al-Sadiq (peace be upon him), as reported in the narration of Abdullah ibn Sanan: "And do not take more than a small handful (hamṣa) from it," for whoever takes more than that is as if they have eaten from our flesh and blood. And in another report from one of them (peace be upon them), it is mentioned that Allah, the Exalted, created Adam from clay and forbade clay to his offspring. I said, "What do you say about the clay of the grave of al-Husayn ibn Ali (peace be upon them)?" He replied, "It is forbidden for people to eat their flesh, but it is permissible for them to eat our flesh, but only a little, like a small handful (hamṣa)."

- He may seek healing with its soil from the sacred confines of his grave (peace be upon him and his holy progeny) alone, five farsakhs from four of its sides, or one farsakh, or twenty-five cubits and twenty and all of it is arranged in order of virtue. It is better to take from his grave to seventy cubits at most. When you collect it, kiss it, and place it on your eyes. Do not exceed a quantity larger than a dried pea. Then say, "O Allah, I ask You by the right of this clay and by the right of the angel who took it for him, and I ask You by the right of the prophet who safeguarded it, and I ask You by the right of the wasi who resides within it, to bless Muhammad and the Muhammad and to make it a healing for every illness, a protection from every fear, and a guard against every evil ...."

- Imam Muhammad ibn al-Husayn Kashif al-Ghita' (may he rest in peace) commented on healing and remedy through the holy Husseinite soil by saying: "The effects can be widely transmitted, just like the widespread reports of events and incidents in which healing occurred for those who sought cure through it from ailments that doctors were unable to heal. Is it not possible that there are chemical elements in that soil that act as a healing balm for a range of illnesses, effectively killing microbes?" Moreover, the scholars of Imamiya have agreed, and the narrations have reiterated, the prohibition of consuming soil except for that from the grave of Hussein (peace be upon him), with specific etiquettes and in a certain amount, namely that it should be less than a small pinch, taken from the grave in a particular manner and with specific prayers.

- As for the issue of supplication while using the clay from the grave of Hussain (peace be upon him), Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) emphasized reading the prescribed supplications and beseeching Allah, the Exalted, to make this clay a cure for every ailment, as without supplication, the one in need will not benefit from it. It is narrated that a man asked al-Sadiq (peace be upon him), saying: "I heard you say that the soil of Hussain (peace be upon him) is one of the singular medicines and that it does not encounter any ailment except that it dissolves it." He replied, "I may have said that. What is your concern?" The man said, "I used it, but did not benefit from it." He replied, "Either it has a specific prayer, so one who uses it without supplicating and employing it will hardly benefit from it." The man then asked, "What should he say when using it?" He said, "Accept it before anything else and place it on your eye and do not take more than a pinch, for whoever takes more is as if he has consumed our flesh and blood..."
